Grand old building with lovely gardens. We had a large room on the first floor with a large king size bed and plenty of space and a view over the garden. The staff were very friendly so we really enjoyed our stay. The dinner and breakfast were both excellent with good quality food and prompt service.
I cannot praise this hotel highly enough. We arrived with our black Labrador (who was totally spoiled for the duration of our stay!) and were shown immediately to our room. This was an executive suite so on the ground floor in the old stables. It was an exceptionally comfortable room with lots of space for a dog bed and patio doors to the gardens. George the dog who had a sore paw (so he received even more attention!) loved the grounds. Lots of tended lawns but also wooded areas to snuffle in. On the first evening we ate in one of the two restaurants. The food was delicious and the atmosphere very relaxed. Breakfasts were also exceptional with a great choice. For our final evening we chose to eat in the restaurant overlooking the gardens. George was happy to stay in our room as this restaurant is dog free. Our meal was, without a doubt, the best hotel food I have ever tasted. We also had a fantastic bottle of wine. It was all incredibly reasonable too! We had a relaxing and comfortable stay with the added bonus of delightful staff, beautiful surroundings and a very happy dog. We’ll definitely stay there again.
This was our second stay and it was through a Travelzoo deal The welcome was great when we arrived, in fact were recognised from staying a year before! Lovely large room with view to the side of the hotel. The bath fills in minutes, the water is really hot. Shower in morning was ok but bath Def better. The hotek grounds are lovely with plenty of places to sit and relax. Went to Brooks pub for a few drinks, only a walk away with good selection of beers and open fire Walk around Ennerdale Walk the next day. It's well worth a visit, with walks for all abilities The deal included dinner and this was lovely The only negative is that breakfast on the Sunday was quite slow but we were in no rush so it hasn't pulled my score down All in all we had a great stay and have already booked to go back! ! (Thanks Jackie)
We stayed for two nights with a travel zoo offer. This included 2 nights b&b plus dinner and a bottle of prosecco on one night. Incredible value for £99 especially as we were upgraded to bigger room. The room was fine but some of the communal areas of the hotel were a bit worn. The ceiling in the dining room is spectacular and it's worth reading the history of the building and the nearby Kangol factory. The meal was excellent and as a result we ate in again on the other night. Craft beer on tap from the local Ennerdale brewery. Walks to recommend are St Bees beach, Whitehaven harbour, Ennerdale Water and the local lake just down the road. All in all a great stay and despite some obvious staff shortages a warm welcome in typical West Cumbria manner.
Looks fine on the photos but that is where it ends. Staff are friendly enough but the hotel needs to be shut down and refurbished from top to bottom. It’s situated in lovely grounds but next to a busy road that people seem to like to race along in the evenings. Rooms are basic to say the least, cold, foisty, damp. Shower only trickles water out, hole in the bath which they have tried to repair but very badly. Food was ok and service was fine but that’s where the positives start and end. Wouldn’t stay here again.
You have got to stay at Ennerdale Country House. It is right on the outskirts of the Lake District by a few minutes drive, but you will save about $100 per night compared to staying in other "popular towns"! Ennerdale Country House is extremely dog friendly, has a cozy pub and restaurant that is dishing up fantastic local dishes, it is super comfortable and clean, all the workers were very accommodating, and the hotel was situated on the most beautiful grounds. Best part, we were within 30 minutes drive to all the spots we wanted to see! I cannot recommend this hotel enough.
I cannot praise this place enough, dog friendly is an understatement. From the moment we arrived our dog was treated like a star. She even had her own seat at breakfast in the dog friendly side of the hotel. A must for dog owners. Superb Staff Steve Oldroyd Harrogate
This Hotel looked lovely on the pictures and the reviews were quite good. It was a different story when we got there. This Hotel is very run down. It needs a serious makeover, repairs are badly needed all over the hotel. When we arrived the room was freezing, the windows were all hanging off and broken. The room stunk of must. Very tired looking.. We asked for some sandwiches when we arrived. The food we got was disgusting, cheap rubber ham with reheat chips which were soggy and barely edible . The next morning we went for breakfast in the tired drab eating area. The breakfast was rubbish, hard eggs, leather bacon, cold toast and cold coffee. The food was disgusting. Not a good hotel at all. The staff were very rude esp towards my 2 kids aged 7 and 5. Not family friendly.. Would not recommend this hotel esp at £100 a night..
We enjoyed an incredibly good value deal from Bespoke Hotels of two nights bed and breakfast with dinner on one night and a bottle of prosecco. The room was not the best, overlooking the bins at the side of the hotel but it was clean and functional, whilst everything else about our stay exceeded expectations. All members of staff were welcoming and friendly. The food was truly memorable. Every dish was presented beautifully and cooked expertly from quality ingredients. Lying just beyond the western edge of the national park, the hotel is well situated for visiting those less frequented parts of The Lake District. Ennerdale Water is gorgeous and markedly different from the stark grandeur of Wast Water. I remember driving the Hardknott Pass in my blasé youth but many years later I found its re-acquaintance quite stunning - we have bags of mountains in Scotland but I cannot think of a public road as striking as that one.
Taking the Coast to Coast to Walk at a leisurely sightseeing pace, this was our first night's stop. This delightful quaint hotel was a great introduction to Cumbrian hospitality. Our room was enormous with a balcony that overlooked the landscaped gardens. The bathroom facilities were adequate even if a little dated by city standards. Be aware that there are a few sets of stairs to negotiate, nothing too strenuous though. We dined in the Fountain View restaurant that evening and the hearty full breakfast served us well for the climb up Dent Hill.
