This is a protest review but other travellers need to know what happened to us ! We planned a touring holiday through Spain and Portugal and specifically targeted places and hotels. We booked in June , with Central Reservations" and received confirmation of our booking that it was "guaranteed with our credit card". Whilst we were in Portugal, two days before we were due to travel to this hotel, we received an email to say the hotel was overbooked and we could not stay there but they would rebook us in other hotels in the group which were not in Guimaraes where we specifically wanted to be. We telephoned and protested but to no avail - eventually central reservations booked us into another hotel in Guimaraes and offered us a lunch at the Pousada as "compensation" . This rubbed salt into the wounds as when we saw the Pousada we realised what a superior hotel this was to the one we had been booked into and been charged the same price - in fact it cost us more as we had to pay 8euros per day to park the car. I am not at all pleased !! A "guaranteed booking by credit card" should be guaranteed !!
This hotel is a typical pousada with friendly staff, excellent breakfast and nice, but rather small bedrooms. Parking is easy. Remember to make a reservation for dinner- the restaurant seems to be too small for the huge hotel.
Wonderful monastery pousada! Live in a monastery for a day or two. Surrounded by truly magnificent antiques. Modern, clean and relaxing swimming pool. Unbelievable gardens, (see in my separate review.) It is truly like stepping back in time. Impressive church still in use with huge crypt area. Great people at the desk. I believe I had one of the 'dungeon' rooms that others have spoken about. I found it quite charming. I suggest exploring the building itself instead of whining about a room that you should be experiencing with your eyes closed, (ie sleeping.) The room was quite comfortable. Your delicious breakfast is included and has everything.
Excellent Accommodation, spacious rooms, nice pool area, very friendly service. The other side: we have tourist groups with buffet in the restaurant, a guide giving lectures to their clients. This is not the place to enjoy a nice dinner in this wonderfully given frame of roman architecture. Check out if going down town by taxi isn't the better option.
Arrival 3/5 - the satnav took us directly to the monastery, but there were some road diversions in the town, which were confusing. Once you are nearby, the hotel is well signed. We arrived after 14:00, but our room was not ready, so we walked the grounds for 20 mins. They apologized for the delay and gave us a complimentary drink each. Location 5/5 - majestically set high on a hill overlooking ancient Guimaraes. A short drive or cab to the World Heritage Site Old Town. Room- 5/5. We treated ourselves for our last night of our trip and booked the Master Suite - room 524 in the old part of the hotel. It was wonderful and well worth the extra. There's an entrance hall, a large lounge and a huge bedroom with a fab 4 poster bed. The bed had a super comfy pillow mattress - we slept well. It was more like an apartment than a hotel room. TVs in the bedroom and the lounge. 2 balconies. Complimentary fruit, water and a small bottle of Port. Minibar fridge, plenty of storage, digital safe - lots of seats and tables. Plenty of power sockets. Wifi was good. The view from the balcony across the town was lovely both in the day and when the sun went down. You can hear the monastery bells nearby, though they mercifully turn them off at night. Bathroom - 5/5. Large with bath and shower. Toilet and bidet. Nice granite tiles. Lovely towels and toiletries. Hairdryer. Dinner 5/5 - we had the 4 course 1/2 board menu - €33pp. The dining room is lovely with granite arches dominating the room. We had a nice bottle of Douro wine (39 euro), which the maitre'd recommended to go with my "12 hour veal". Service was efficient and friendly. Breakfast 4/5. A good selection of foods, though II thought that the cheese and meats were a but basic. Nice coffee. Other 5/5. The public rooms of the hotel are wonderful and the grounds are beautiful. We spent a hour in the sun by the nice pool area. Overall 5/5. One of the best hotel suites we have ever stayed in. One night was definitely not enough. We really enjoyed our stay here and we we're very sad to leave.
This is a lovely hotel situated about 40 minutes walk to the town centre. There is a bus stop nearby which you can take to centre but it runs only during the day ( numbers 51/52) Take a taxi which is inexpensive. The outdoor swimming pool is nice and adequate size. The food in the restaurent is very good. You find that the starters are almost a meal in themselves. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are a bit outdated and need refurnishing to bring them up to modern standards. The best place to eat in town is in the Largo de Oliveira especially restaurante Buxa. Hope this is helpful.
The building is superb. The hall ways and common rooms are fabulous. The rooms themselves less so but ok. Facts:- You would be crazy not to stay in the historic wing (and the wifi does work despite what some reviews say). Hotel is 2km and 20mins from the historic town and it isnt a very interesting walk. But it's only EUR6 in a taxi. Restaurant lacks a bit of atmosphere but the food is good. But you'd probably be better off eating in town. The town is great in the evening when most of the tourists are gone. Grounds and pool are excellent. Loads of free parking. Rooms have safe and minibar with space to squeeze some of your own supplies in. Staff friendly and efficient but not over fussy. Quiet. If your Budget allows I think you'll enjoy it.
This is just such a beautiful, peaceful and relaxing place. An old, renovated monastery with stunning gardens and views over Guimareas. Fantastic place to stay when visiting this interesting town. Walking distance to town. Would recommend taking a taxi back though, since it's quite a steep hill when going back up.
Guimaraes is one of the most interesting towns on a small scale in Portugal. Pousada Mosteiro is a fine spot to finalize your script, book or speech! The park and the atriums, the huge historic halls or early morning by the pool. Lots of Portugal is reflected right there. It is hard indeed not to fall in love with this Pousada and the ambiance it holds. A well tuned grand piano, excellent service at all hours. Fine and varied food. Six stars to the staff. A short taxi ride takes you down the hill to the magnificent old town. One of the best kept in Europe they say and charm, architecture and all scales of dining wait for you and your darling, your family or best friends. Portugal has many beautiful places to relax, this is one of my families favorites.
Lovely location - walkable to town (or cheap taxi) but with nice views. Very well converted from the original monastery, with oodles of original features (tiles, staircases, patios, gardens, walls, cells, fountains). Rooms in the original building are smaller but more atmospheric. Professional service, well maintained, clean. Swimming pool is fab - modern, clean, plenty of beds, great views and a snack bar. Highly recommended.
