Tiny rooms, very uncomfortable bed, room access very inconvenient, feels.like a hostel
Novum Hotel Leonet Koeln Altstadt shouldn't be your first pick for Cologne. Or even your second or third. The best thing going for this rundown, dirty hotel is that it's pretty close to Neumarkt, which means easy train access as well as plenty to eat and drink. That's fine. But the street it's down is pretty shady looking, and the noise around the area at night is excessive by anyone's standards. The rooms are not good. They're about standard for European stays -- that's fine. But they're in pretty rough condition. The rooms I saw had holes in walls, peeling wall coverings, mildew in the bathrooms, and shabby furnishings. These conditions are unacceptable for the price. And forget about privacy. On the first day we checked in we had someone just walk into our room. Not hotel staff. Just someone random. Two days later we had what I HOPE was hotel staff unlocking our door and entering, only to say Sorry and quickly shut the door. We were clearly in the room, and the Do Not Disturb sign was right over the door's lock. The breakfast buffet is pretty barebones: cereal, a couple of bread choices, canned fruit, eggs. Not terrible, though. Just kind of lacking overall. On the upside, the hotel counter staff was kind. But that's the only real upside.
The location is good, but the hotel itself is rather nondescript, with tiny rooms (and a window that could not be closed when ti was 8C outside...). Title says it all.
