Sip French wine in the cobbled streets of Colmar

Colmar is a haven for artists, and a community replete with history, where winding cobblestone streets and quaint bridges invite you to take a stroll. This town of about 65,000 people is located in the northeastern region of Alsace, and visitors will feel as if they've entered the pages of a storybook upon arrival.

Some people go to Colmar expressly for the wine. The town has been exporting this delicious commodity since the Middle Ages, and the region's vineyards are celebrated throughout Europe. Naturally, many of Colmar's fine restaurants serve local wines with their irresistible meals. Long after your stay, you're likely to remember the chicken, fish, Munster cheese, sauerkraut, sausages and breads of the area.

Things to see
Unterlinden Museum

The Unterlinden Museum specializes in contemporary art, ancient artifacts, sculptures and paintings from the 1100s to the 1500s. A visit here is almost a mystical experience, imparting a powerful sense of how our civilizations have grown.

The building itself is a veritable work of art; it was built during the 13th century and originally served as a convent. Many visitors are mesmerized by this museum's archaeological wing, which uses relics to illustrate the rise of human society. The Unterlinden's undisputed highlight, though, is the sweeping Isenheim Altarpiece, which Matthias Grunewald completed around 1515 for the Monastery of St. Anthony in Isenheim, France.

St. Martin's Collegiate Church

St. Martin's Collegiate Church features a dramatic bell tower and eye-catching buttresses. Its exterior includes several medieval statues, including one of St. Martin and two that depict European kings, most likely Charlemagne and Pepin the Short. St. Martin's provides a fine introduction to Gothic architecture, and it's an extraordinarily peaceful place to pray or simply to reflect upon your place in the universe.

Little Venice

Little Venice is a colorful section of Colmar that's divided by the Lauch River. The half-timbered buildings on either side of this graceful waterway don't really resemble their Venetian counterparts, but they do make this district an especially inviting place. If you have the time, you might take a gondola ride through this part of town. All in all, Little Venice's atmosphere is dreamlike, and it's terrific for fueling romantic sparks.

Best times to stay

Colmar has four well-defined seasons. If you go around Christmas, you'll be enchanted by the lights and the blankets of snow. The vibrant colors of autumn likewise transform the town, and in Alsace, the harvest begins in early September and extends through the beginning of November. Meanwhile, a celebratory spirit grips the area during the spring; the sights and scents of the blossoming trees and flowers are electrifying.

The spectacle of summer

Summer, however, may be the most magical of this town's seasons. In part, that's because people decorate Colmar hotels, homes and workplaces with flowers in gigantic bouquets and overflowing baskets. In addition, many residents and visitors spend as much time as they can outdoors, while the weather is so mild and refreshing. Seeing all these people out strolling, dining al fresco, shopping and appreciating each other's company definitely encourages travelers to join in.

Where to stay

Colmar's central area and historic district have ample hotels and accommodations where you can stay inside the heart of the action. From welcoming, family-run establishments like the Hotel Beausejour, to big names including the Best Western, you can enjoy quaint, European retreats or larger hotels with fitness facilities, activities and conference rooms.

Yearly events of note
Alsace Wine Fair

The Alsace Wine Fair takes place at Colmar's Parc des Expositions over the course of 10 days in August. If you want to mingle with wine experts or drink to your heart's content, this is the place to do it. The region's biggest festival, it's been a cherished event since it began in 1948.

Approximately 450 professionals evaluate 2,000 or so wine samples, and they present awards to their favorites. What's more, the organizers of the fair stage numerous concerts.

Fete le Printemps

April's Fete le Printemps celebrates the joys of springtime. It goes on for more than two weeks, and it brings sheep, ducks and chicks to town. Plus, marketplaces are set up in two village squares. At those markets, you can buy souvenirs with an Easter and spring theme. You'll find outstanding deals and unique items, and all over town, you can enjoy the music of classical artists and jazz bands.

If you associate the French countryside with wine, cheese, open-air marketplaces, elaborate gardens and Gothic architecture, Colmar is the charming village you’ve been imagining.
