Chiang Mai Orchid Hotel3.5 out of 5.0

The staff at the orchid are very good. The hotel is located conveniently, I was able to comfortably walk to the old city. However, the bathrooms are quite dated and, more importantly, there is a limited number of power points which made charging multiple devices quite difficult.
This used to be a 5 Star facility, but time moves on. Many things need work, better mattresses, but overall it is well maintained. Good breakfast, perhaps a few more options. Very good price. 20 minutes to the night market. There is a small shopping mall next door. Good for conferences. I’d give it 3.5
This hotel is a landmark in Chiang Mai's hospitality business. It has all the amenities and, most importantly, a prime location. As a bonus: one of the best swimming pools in town. Unfortunately, it makes a tired impression. Staff attitudes are sullen. Caters now mainly to Chinese package tourists. Perhaps there is a link... Unfortunately
An old style hotel. Some pictures in front of the elevators remind the hotel had its great period 30-40 years ago, emperors, princes and kings stayed at this hotel. The lobby is comfortable. The room where I stayed was big. Some amenities like 2 bottles of water every day. Some details need to fix in the room. Make sure the cleaning prices do not include neither tax or fee. I have booked with breakfast included; a good choice among Asia food and plain Western food. Next door has a shopping mall, with a supermarket and food court inside. In front a Seven Eleven and a place with music at night. You can hear from the hotel, however, the music stops around mid night. Very convenient venue, you reach tourist areas by red taxi/cap.
I stayed at the Orchid for 4 nights. I emailed them prior to my arrival to see if they would collect me from the airport however at 500Bht for one person, why would I when a taxi is just 170 Bht?? There are some strong points for and against staying here. I will commence with the things that I liked; location- next door to a shopping centre with lots of cheap eats, massages and a supermarket. Two minute walk from the Old City and 5 minutes from Nimmanhaemin Rd. A clean, spacious and very well equipped gym with mostly new equipment. For an ordinary hotel I couldn't believe the quality of this gym. They even have hand and bath towels and a water dispenser plus it opens at 6am every day..brilliant! The pool; lots of new banana lounges, all with umbrellas. It is a large pool, maybe 25m, and just the right temperature. The lobby area is also really pleasant , quite spectacular really, and has a lot of couches to relax on. Also commendations for having cards to indicate when you want bedding changed to save on extraneous cleaning and to preserve the environment! The negatives; my standard room was very run down and actually quite dirty. The bathroom in particular was very grotty and mouldy. The one time I had room service in it appeared they only made the bed and changed the towels, I was disappointed to find they hadn't even swept the floor or wiped down any surfaces. I felt like I was living in filth, especially after seeing 2 small cockroaches and some ants!!! The tv was a flatscreen and did offer at least 10 English speaking channels however reception was variable so sometimes only half of them were viable. They provide 2 bottles of drinking water per day, a kettle and 4 glasses but no coffee/tea/mugs or teaspoons. Also reception staff were very frosty and unwelcoming. All the other staff were friendly and warm; reception needs to be up the ante. I didn't opt to have the buffet breakfast when I booked after reading some disparaging reviews on TA. It was only 160bht (About $10.50 Au) so I thought I would try it one morning. The coffee was vile- tepid and weak!! However I thought the food spread was pretty decent (salad bar, fruit, a few pastries and bread, 2 soup stations, and some soy milk thing that I wasn't sure of!, plus both Asian and European style hot dishes and an omelette station). I can see that it is more geared towards Asian tastes but I enjoy eating that way for breakfast so it suited me. I love coffee though so the sub-par quality of it meant I wasn't returning for the buffet again. I would definitely stay again because at $35 per night I got my moneys worth using the gym and pool everyday and enjoyed being close to the action of the old city.
The hotel is big building located by Central departmentstore. I think is a big but old . The room is clean and convenient. I love the big pool and clean fitness on 4th floor. If not seriously i think this hotel is a good choice.
The Orchid was obviously the biggest and best Chiang Mai hotel in its day (built mid-80's) and still manages to retain a sense of faded grandeur and engaging charm. Noteable features include an enormous and beautiful lobby lounge with Thai teak wood fittings and well spaced sofas and chairs. This is best enjoyed in the afternoon when a beautiful Thai lady graces the area playing a 'khim', a traditional zither-type instrument that emits a most soothing sound. What a pity that the surface harmony is often disturbed by coachloads of rowdy and raucous tourists from China one of whom charged into me and nearly knocked me over. The hotel really ought to sort out this problem for it will only get worse without some large posters in Chinese characters setting out house rules on Thai etiquette and decorum. Subject to the above disturbances, the evening sees a pianist who has long been a feature of the lobby lounge.Bedrooms on the 7th floor are spacious, comfortable and well appointed. Bathrooms have seen better days. Front-of-house staff in the lobby are polite and eager to please. However, the senior lady Receptionist lacks the traditional warmth of welcome and Thai smile that should be a given in Chiang Mai and at a hotel like this. Her female subordinates follow suit, obviously unsure how to engage with guests. Good sized swimming pool.
This hotel is conveniently located next to a really good high rise shopping mall. It offers pretty much any convenience you are looking for at a pretty affordable price. Food is good and it is a short ride to any location in the city.
Great location. 10 minutes from the center of Chiang Mai. Good sized swimming pool and ample sized room. But, is tired in places and our room was in need of an overhaul. You can tell that this was indeed once the pearl of Chiang Mai but it does need a bit of TLC.
I have seen this old girl through a change from being a dignified middle aged woman to down at heel but proud old girl living on past glories. Yes the rooms are tired but the hotel is in a fabulous place, you can arrange free pick up from the airport. Would avoid the breakfast. Overpriced and understocked. Much used by Chinese tourists now and there is a first class dim sum restaurant here.
