The hotel is a very old Railway hotel and must cost a fortune to keep in the good condition we found it. Very clean, well decorated. Reception was well organised and speedy. The staff were fantastic. All so helpful and nothing was to much trouble for them. The room was large and very comfortable, but very hot when we stayed. Could have done with a fan in the room. Fortunately the dining room had air conditioning. The food was plentiful with a good choice as well as very enjoyable. The only draw back at each meal was the chaos of layout for the serving area and a toaster which blocked everything as it was so inefficient. A good hotel clean, friendly hotel with Excellent staff.
Check in was very efficient and friendly. Room was clean and towels fluffy. Hot water was plentiful :-) I got a really good nights sleep on the second floor. I am very happy with the room. However, I sat in the restaurant for a very long time and was completely ignored by the waiting staff. I was there long enough for the man behind me to make two long business calls, the man at the table on my right to make his order and be served a beer, other people to sit at a round table for 4 and be served wine. Long enough for the server to go in and out of the kitchen more than once. Long enough to not wish to stay and order the Burger that I was looking forward to after reading the menu in my room. Epic fail here. Not even the slightest glimmer of eye contact did I receive. Shameful customer service...
We have been on many coach tours with National and stayed in a variety of hotels but it’s been a while since we stayed in a Best Western and my recollection was of an older establishment compared with the Holiday/Jurys Inn type of establishment. And so it proved with this hotel, from a bygone age but none the worse for it, our room, on the second floor, was a fair size and very welcoming and clean, what more could you ask for? Check in had been straight forward and the electronic age has overtaken the door key. The bygone age hotel provided a bath, and showerhead affixed to the taps, instead of the just the shower option, soap/shower gel was provided by containers on the wall. My wife and I freshened up and went down for our evening meal, the décor of these older establishment tends to be more stylish, not so much wooden floors, more carpets. We were directed to a large beautifully styled room, again a décor from a bygone age of large cornices and huge windows with imposing curtains. We were handed a menu, the soup was served to you but for the main meal you just went to a little room next door, set up as a temporary servery if you like and picked from what was on offer. We had the chicken, served to by a chef, then you chose your veg and potato’s, but then another staff member served either gravy or a mushroom sauce. As seems to be the case a whole coach load of customers, many elderly, are not patient so when some of the holiday makers dawdled over their choice of food others soon got irate, but the staff did their best. The food was superb, from the soup to the sweet, which was, like the soup, served to you by very able and efficient staff. We finished our meal, then back to our room to settle down for the night in comfortable beds, and having had a fairly busy day of walking we were soon asleep. Down for breakfast in the morning and a similar set up only you just helped yourself, in the little annexe room, for the full English breakfast. When some of the food trays were low they were replenished from a kitchen in a room opposite, but as is the case some still grumbled. Fruit juice, bread and a toasting machine, fruit itself, yoghurt, were all on offer but I’ve probably missed something off as I just take on board what I want. Again, staff were on hand to take away empty plates and like the night before the same staff and the same efficiency. This hotel was far more decorative than some we have stayed in and I hope they don’t refurb or modernise the décor in the future, freshen things up by all means but the splendour of such hotels are fading from our country.
A very pleasant stay. Very helpful and accommodating staff. Food was like home cooking and very good. Recently redecorated. Bedrooms were very comfortable and clean. Adequate parking. Located on a busy junction, with access to buses and train services. Would use again for a short stay.
I stayed here overnight on a journey to Glasgow and will be staying again. The staff were polite and helpful and the location is brilliant for those commuting like myself... The station must be a mere 200 steps away!
A nice small hotel that I stayed in whilst on business. The staff were great very accommodating and friendly. The rooms were clean and tidy and I felt good being at the hotel which is usually a good indication of me using the hotel again.
We had 4 nights in the hotel and had only one "complaint"; the rest of the time was excellent. The staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble. We ate in the hotel, the breakfast was as good as any we have had as part of the booking. Dinners each night were really great pub food or better!! It was also very close to Crewe Station so an easy base for trains. It was also close to a car hire place and was easy to get to and from when touring. The hotel itself is like many older UK hotels, like Topsy she grew!! Passageways and corridors everywhere and floors that are not lever. A hotel that is full of character. The only problem was that the room was above the area where the venting from the kitchen so was noisy between 6am and 9pm.
The hotel was used by National Holidays on a Mystery Weekend, the hotel was very clean and tidy, the staff very polite and helpful, the evening meal and breakfast we had was nice and to a high quality standard..... would recommend this hotel !
Stayed for a night before working locally the next morning. Very courteous welcome, lovely staff behind the desk. Room was fine, narrow shape but enough space, plugs, places to put things...TV a little small, especially as viewed along the length of the room...but that's a minor matter. Very clean bathroom, nicely kitted out, hot flow in the sink a bit weak, but a good shower. Evening meal in the bar area, a little short on atmosphere, but a decent beer and a very good house burger, excellent sides, onion chutney, good presentation. Breakfast a little less exciting, plenty of cereals and fruit, but so-so coffee, truly horrible orange juice, anaemic sausage, flabby bacon. Redeemed by very good black pudding and mushrooms. Why no fried eggs? That scrambled stuff isn't half as nice. Croissants rather stodgy, not very nice, made me want to be in France in the queue at a bakery! The hotel has character, history, a great location and super staff...it just needs some improvement on the breakfast and a little refreshing for some of the decor and it could justifiably resume its place as one of the better railway hotels. After all, it was the first one in the world.
Hi All, stayed in this hotel, as we had a Company conference locally. The rooms are perfect for a short stay, drink value for money was perfect. Not what you would expect from a Hotel bar. we didn't do the food due to a good number of us meeting up in Crewe. The Staff at this hotel are 2nd to none. John, Jamie, Phil, Adam and a lady ( sorry I forgot the name.) We are all in the same industry, some of our group have hotels some not But I do feel if you want a true opinion from people that work day in and day out doing the same job, please take note of this review. The Management of the Crewe Arms, you should be very proud of all of your staff Gary and Maria
