Best Flights to Stockholm, Sweden

With unique glass artwork, winter sports, and a funky modern atmosphere layered over years of history, Stockholm enchants visitors. The largest of Swedish cities, Stockholm offers vibrant night life, great shopping districts, and some of the best beer in Europe. Orbitz.com can find you the best flights to Stockholm, Sweden, for your Nordic adventure.

Stockholms Airports

Stockholm is served by four airports. Most flights to Stockholm come through the Stockholm-Arlanda airport (190 45 Stockholm-Arlanda), located about 20 miles north of Stockholm. The majority of other air traffic comes through either the Stockholm-Bromma airport, located at Ulvsundavgen, Stockholm,or the Stockholm-Skavsta airport, located at General Schybergs Plan 22, 611 92 Nykping, Sweden. A few visitors come through the Stockholm-Vsters Airport, but its locationnearly an 80-minute drive outside the citymakes it a less-attractive option.

Airport Transportation

You can get to the Stockholm-Arlanda airport by driving on the E-4 north; follow the signs to the airport. Because Stockholm-Arlanda is a large and busy airport, it is well-served by taxis, with a typical cost of about $52 when coming from downtown Stockholm. To find Stockholm-Skavsta Airport, take the E-4 south from Stockholm, get off at exit 133, and then follow the signs to Skavsta. Because Stockholm is fairly distant from the city center, taxi rides will be expensive. However, Flygbussarna (Flightbus) AB, a bus shuttle, serves Stockholm-Skavsta, and a ticket to downtown Stockholm will cost you less than $40. To reach Stockholm-Bromma, get on Ulvsundavgen, road 279, going west from the city center, and look for the airport signs; alternatively, you can drive the E-4 north, following the signage directing you to Stockholm-Bromma. Because Stockholm-Bromma is close to the city center, its also served by Bus 110 from Alvik and Bus 152 from lvsj via Solna and Sundbyberg. Stockholm-Vsters Airport is more than 60 miles from the city center, but it is well-served by bus and train transportation. Flygbussarna AB meets all flights, including late ones, for direct transportation to and from Stockholm for about $40 per ticket one way. You can also catch a train from Stockholm to the Vsters Central station each hour (and sometimes every half-hour) and then take a taxi to the airport from there. If you are driving, take the E-18 west out of Stockholm, get off at exit 139, and look for the airport signs.

Weather in Stockholm

Stockholm has a more temperate climate than you might expect, probably because of the mitigating effects of the nearby sea. Temperatures can drop well below 0?F during the winter, but summer temperatures top out around 70?F, rarely reaching higher than 80?F. Precipitation is more likely in Stockholm in the winter, so expect frequent snowfall. Even during the summer, it can get cold, so bring fall-appropriate coats and sweaters.

Attractions in Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden, is the home of the Stockholm Palace, the official royal residence of King Carl XVI Gustaf and his family, and the city is also home to about 22 percent of Swedens population. Because Stockholm is built on 14 major islands (and a few minor ones) interconnected by bridges and divided by canals, you are rarely very far from water. Guided boat tours are very popular, especially those that take you through the canals, Lake Mlaren, and onto the sea. Stockholms Museum of Modern Art is free, and family activities include winter sports or water sports (depending on the season), fishing excursions, and the famous amusement park Grna Lund. You will quickly learn to order beer by strength, from light (the weakest) to dark. Stockholm has hundreds of restaurants, many serving traditional Swedish dishes like gravlax and pickled herring, moose steaks, and reindeer casserole. The best time of year to visit Stockholm is probably anytime between June and August, when nights are very short and the weather is pleasantly temperate.

Destination Stockholm

No matter what your reason for visiting Stockholm, you can find plenty to do, from trying the truly unique local cuisine to touring many years of history via boat. Orbitz.com is ready to help you find flights to Stockholm whenever youre ready to plan that family vacation of a lifetime or experience an adventure by yourself in the land of ABBA.
