Pisa International Airport, also called Galileo Galilei International Airport, is located less than a mile from the heart of the city. Still, it is convenient to rent a car from one of the 10 companies that have rental facilities at the airport, as you can use it to explore nearby towns in Tuscany. The local taxi cooperative offers taxi rides to central Pisa for 5.70€ on weekdays and 8.00€ on Sundays and holidays. Public buses to the center of Pisa, as well as to other towns in the region, are available, and the red LAM line to Pisa runs every 10 minutes and costs 1.10€. There is also a shuttle train every 30 minutes to the central Pisa railway station, and the 5-minute ride costs 1.40€.
Of course, you will want to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is situated behind the Duomo Cathedral, a major architectural monument that dates back to 1053. The Campo dei Miracoli is located in the very center of Pisa, and it is an important site for medieval art. Nearby is the Baptistery, the place in which citizens of Pisa were baptized during the Middle Ages. The Keith Haring mural painted on the rear wall of the Church of Sant'Antonio is a fine example of more modern art, and several other local museums will delight art fans. Take a stroll in either the 16th-century botanical gardens or the Parco della Forteza Sangallo, and explore the fort located in the park. The hottest months in Pisa are July and August, with highs of 84 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of 63 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest months are December, January and February, with highs of 52 to 54 degrees Fahrenheit and lows in the high 30s. May and November see highs of 59 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of 43 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and temperatures in April range from 46 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit. May and October experience highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s, with highs and lows 5 degrees or so higher in June and September. Rainfall is moderate but steady throughout the year. Bring an umbrella and a light jacket no matter when you visit, so you can enjoy the cool nighttime sea breezes in comfort.
