Visit the seaside city of Batumi in Georgia for a relaxed atmosphere. Nearly 150 years old, Old Batumi is a part of the 19th-century city featuring buildings with mythical creatures, chimeras and lions. Standing 426.5 feet high with a DNA helix shape, Alphabetic Tower was built as a landmark in 2012 and celebrates the unique Georgian alphabet. Ali & Nino is a 26.25-foot-tall statue of a woman and a man, which move positions periodically and light up at night. Only one surviving mosque from the 1860s still stands with Koranic calligraphy-painted walls.
Originally made in 1884, Batumi Boulevard is a park strip that runs along the main beach, stretching 3.73 miles and featuring paths, beach bars and cafes. A Ferris wheel is at the northeast tip, and the Dancing Fountains are in the south end, offering a water, laser and music show. Go to 6 Maisi Park to visit or swim with dolphins at an aquarium and to visit local and international wildlife at a small zoo. View a collection of Georgian, Russian and European art at the Adjara Arts Museum.
If you fly to Batumi, you will likely land at Batumi International Airport (BUS), which is just 3.1 miles south of the city center. A municipal bus offers a service into the center, which takes about 20 minutes. Taxis are also available and can get you to the center in about 10 to 15 minutes. Two notable annual events are the Black Sea Jazz Festival in late July and Batumi International Art House Film Festival in late September.
