Hotel De La Parra3.5 out of 5.0

During our stay last April my wife and I scouted eight different hotels for comparison for our second trip to Oaxaca. We decided De La Parra was still the best choice for our preference: (1) Clean like a Marriott***** hotel, (2) Responsive and friendly staff. (3) Quiet and walking distance to museums, restaurants, etc. This second time around: Same staff (except for one new employee), same, same, same everything.
My wife and I stayed and the Hotel de la Parra for four nights on our recent visit to Oaxaca. The hotel grounds and common areas are beautifully decorated and the room (Junior Suite) was spacious and very clean. The hotel is only a block from the zocalo, but is on a side street that wasn't very busy. Everything in the tourist area is very convenient and accessible. All of the staff at the hotel, from the front desk, to the restaurant, to the cleaning and maintenance staff were all very friendly and helpful. We only ate breakfasts at the hotel, but the food was excellent and the courtyard was lovely. There were a few minor maintenance issues, including the lack of hot water early in the mornings, and a hot tub that didn't seem to work....but overall not a big deal, and we'd definitely stay here again on any future visits.
We had the most wonderful experience at this small hotel. Rooms were clean, staff was amazing- the nicest and most friendly and helpful group of people. Enjoyed the pool most every afternoon with a delicious mezcalina and the breakfasts at the little restaurant were delicious. Really enjoyed meeting Daniel, the bartender at the pool. We felt so welcome and at home here. This is a hotel that I will definitely be coming back to! Thank you to everyone at Hotel de La Parra for such a great experience.
We stayed in the Parra the first week in June and had a lovely time. It is one of the oldest buildings in Oaxaca, and the historic feel that lends the hotel, especially the courtyards with the combination of colonial architecture and greenery, makes the experience. The rooms were appointed nicely with good bedding, towels, a safe, hair dryer, iron, etc. We took breakfast a the hotel every morning in the second courtyard, from simple toast and fruit to the traditional oaxacan fare, and it was affordable and fresh. The location is right off the zocalo, so the museums and restaurants were in walking distance, whether close to the zocalo or Santo Domingo. No need for taxis. I personally fell in love with the pool courtyard, which is one of the reasons I booked the hotel. It was heaven to come in from our wanderings to swim in the pool, which is immaculately kept and heated, and read in the sun loungers or the bar area. Daniel, the young barkeeper, always took good care of us, before heading out to dinner. The front staff was very friendly and helpful, offering a little map-based orientation at the beginning of the stay. We were having some issues with air conditioning and asked to move to a room with a window, and they did so immediately. Our new room on the third floor was perfect with a window and a sitting area, and that AC worked just fine. I really do recommend one of the rooms with the windows on the 2nd or third floor. I'm sure the interior rooms without the window would be fine if the air conditioner problem had not have happened, but I started to feel a little claustrophobic. Again, the staff was friendly and accommodating. I definitely recommend staying here.
Very expensive for what they are offering. We paid $260 CDN per night for the room and the term "boutique" doesn't apply. No breakfast included in that. Most of the rooms have windows towards the interior stairs and are dark and musty. Ours was towards the street and we had a blaring bank/store alarm going on and off for 3 hours one night and the police cars chasing somebody and parking in front of the hotel for half an hour of disco lighting the second night. I don't know why firecrackers/petards are such an used item in Mexico - religious? - but they are starting on weekends very early in the morning and they could be really disturbing. Pillows were awfully lumpy and bathroom toiletries and towels were at minimum. No hair drier ( at least in our room, which was superior). Very attractive swimming pool area and great breakfast . The swimming pool water though - dare at your own risk - green but murky - not exactly inviting, except for fungus and Pseudomonas. The staff was very nice and tried to accommodate us. Maybe because we've been spoiled at other boutique hotels in the past for the same price (Quinta Real) we kept comparing and De La Parra felt short. Maybe we were there at the wrong time - long weekend - therefore busy, noisy and overpriced. Oaxaca though is precious and worth the three nights without much sleep and the thousand dollars it cost. We'll be back, maybe though not at De La Parra...
My friends and I booked this hotel last minute (2 days) before our trip. We ended up staying an extra night there because we liked it so much! The room was clean, the price was affordable, and we loved breakfast at the restaurant inside the hotel. It's right next to the Zocalo and was a quick walk from everywhere we wanted to eat and go out in Oaxaca. The front desk staff was awesome and helped us book a tour for the next day, which we loved so much! Would absolutely stay there again.
Very friendly staff located in short walking distance from the plaza. Comfortable rooms, swimming pools and court head for breakfast. Close to all restaurants, markets and walking street . Recommend it highly.
Half a block from the bustling Zocala this hotel and its staff exude a homey and welcoming atmosphere. As soon as you enter you get the ambience of hospitality with the front desk casually disguised as a "home office," and the energizing sunshine of the courtyard inviting the guest to immediately sit on one of the living room chairs. We stayed for two weeks and got pampered by the friendly and very accommodating staff. Once inside it's hard to tell you're not in the comfort of your own home. The manager and the owner anticipated our constantly changing needs. Before we left Oaxaca we ent around to about a dozen other boutique hotels for comparison, conclusion - we have booked two months at De La Parra for next winter.
Small hotel - 10 rooms. Food and drinks are available from 7am to midnight. Very pleasant staff. Room was clean, bed was very comfortable. Excellent location for the major plaza (Zocalo), mid-range and nicer restaurants beyond the cathedral. We were there for immersion Spanish lessons at Instituto Interactivo, right around the corner -- also highly recommended.
This is a really nice hotel, with pretty and clean amenities. Host & service is really good and the food is delicious and cheap. Room prices are high, specially if you are Mexican because they charge in USD which is not fair since we are in Mexico. They had a water problem which was solved quickly, but two days we had little or no water (even for the restroom) and when it was solved, water came out brown & dirty! Imagine washing your teeth or taking a shower with that... A strike has being held for more than a year ago in Zócalo, which is half a block away, so almost everyday there was people camping in the middle of the street and in the sidewalk of the hotel; it made it difficult to walk by and took a lot of time to move the car if you parked in the hotel's street, but everyone was peaceful so even if it is anoying, it is safe.
