I was stranded at the Cedar Rapids airport at 6 am due to snow cancellations, found the Kirkwood online, and called. They couldn’t have been nicer, found me a room, sent the shuttle just for me, and allowed me to check in immediately. The room was large and very clean, with huge glass windows and cozy seating. There’s a full service restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with surprisingly fresh and unique menu items. The lobby has a modern look with a comfortable seating area around a free-standing fireplace. The price was more than reasonable. Highly recommended!
This hotel does an overnight rate where you can leave your vehicle parked while you travel from Cedar Rapids airport. They take you over to drop you off for your flight & then are waiting for you on your return flight. We've done this more than once & it's a wonderful way to start our trip. Everyone is very helpful & kind. Our room even included a free breakfast, but because of our very early departure, we were unable to use the breakfast vouchers. I would be remiss to mention how they handled a lost item for us. My 8 year old left his jacket at the hotel. They located it for us & mailed it to us, free of charge! What amazing customer service! Huge thanks to the staff at the Hotel at Kirkwood Center!
This is a conference hotel that is relatively new. It is located in a remote part of the city...no shopping or interesting gyms nearby. They do gobs of big weddings, IU fan gatherings before games and lots of business meetings. It's a teaching hotel. Some of the staff are students learning how move to top tier hotels in key management positions upon graduation. The meeting rooms are exceptionally well equipped. Our A/V coordinator (Cathy Coleman) was particularly knowledgeable and attentive. Not even one staff person walked past us without speaking and smiling. The guest rooms are large and squeaky clean. There is one flaw that they can easily, inexpensively correct. Almost no free easy-to-reach electrical plug-ins. A couple of power strips could help prevent old guys like me (74 yo) from bending and twisting to plug-in for a CPAP machine and computers. I tested their WiFi speeds, and they are 4-5X faster than other (chain) hotels where I have stayed in Cedar Rapids. The number of items in each category on the menu is not long, but is amazingly well prepared. We had room service as well as using their restaurant. Food arrived quickly, hot and properly seasoned. We had seafood, poultry, pork and beef. They offer two soups each day and hand crafted sweet treats to die for. Were we pleased? We have spoken around the world over the past 40+ years. Very rarely have we found a place as well designed and maintained as The Hotel. Absolutely outstanding.
This is my choice for our employees to stay. In addition, I have taken employees and clients to the restaurant for lunch. Unique menu. The food is very good. Having gone there on a relatively monthly basis, I'm either getting more picky or I'm seeking flaws. The menu needs some new things on it, and the service the past few visits has been slow. I understand the elegance they want and privacy to talk business, but when you only have an hour they need to turn the orders quicker.
It is a very nice hotel. It's run in part by Hospitality Department at Kirkwood Community College whose campus is right across the street and includes a very nice restaurant. It has a nice conference area attached and was full of little extras like having doorbells on the rooms. Be aware that they don't have a pool and that they are on the edge of town. You're not going to be walking anywhere like a nearby restaurant or store.
Loved the stay! Loved the restaurant, the food options, our room was gorgeous and quiet and the Cookie Staycation was Awesome! Having a morning with my daughter and the dessert chefs of Kirkwood was awesome!
No doubt the Kirkwood is the best Hotel in CR. It is close to the airport, quiet, great food, nice rooms and beautiful bathrooms. The staff is amazing! They are not the regular hourly paid staff that could careless, they are mostly students of the hotel industry and strive to make your stay great. The food is a culinary masterpiece. There is a small work out room with 2 treadmills and a bike. It is sufficient for most people. The linens are nice and the rooms are quiet and comfortable.
Kudos to the Hotel Kirkwood and all of the staff. My girlfriends and I were surprised with a room upgrade and then a free breakfast. Every staff member that we encountered greeted us with a genuine smile, from the front desk to the restaurant staff. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in the area.
Stayed here for a night and had a wonderful experience. The Staff was super friendly, check-in was quick and easy, and the room was VERY nice. We had a mini kitchen in our room too. The room was very clean and spacious. We even had a very good night's sleep. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone that was looking to stay in Cedar Rapids. I think its great that we have a place this this; a place where student can do real hands on the job type of thing. Its called "hospitality" that keep you coming back.
The Hotel at Kirkwood is a gem. They teach hospitality to community college students and get a 4.0 from me! They provided pick up and drop off service from the Cedar Rapids Airport. There is a 400 M track nearby and walking trails as well.
