We spent 4 nights here and enjoyed everything about our stay. The room was clean and spacious and in a spectacular setting, you are definitely living in a tropical rainforest. Waking to the the roaring of the howler monkeys or the squawking of the great green parrots , and later spotting them in the trees around the lodge is one of the more memorable things about our trip to Costa Rica. White faced monkeys are virtually guaranteed. We were initially a bit unsure as to whether it would be a disadvantage not to be in Tortuguero Village but with the benefit of hindsight it was a great decision to be at the Rana Roja, a quiet, (apart from the above wildlife and birdlife!) tranquil, natural, self contained location. Transport by water taxi could be organised within minutes and it's an enjoyable 3 minutes across the water to the village. Food in the restaurant was excellent, a buffet with plenty of choice. Jacob and Ilsis, the young managers, were brilliant, extremely hard working, very helpful in arranging taxis, tours etc. and always attentive to our needs. To us the proximity of the other accommodation had nothing but advantages: another pool to choose from, another bar, extensive gardens with lots of birds.
We enjoyed our stay at Rana Roja Lodge. The grounds are nicely maintained. It is deceiving in that the grounds connect to, two other properties so the area was much busier than we expected. From the pictures on the website it appears that the Lodge is remote but for its location and all the people on the three properties it's not as if it appears. The accommodations were clean and average. The music from the bar on the adjacent was property was fairly loud in the evening but it was the only location to have a drink at night since the waterfront bar at Rana Roja Lodge was never open. The staff was very friendly and helped with any questions, tours or bookings. Hector in the dining area was awesome and very attentive to making sure you were taken care of. The food was pretty good and made it easy since it was always a water taxi to town. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and give high marks to the staff. The only drawback was how busy the property was with three lodges on the property.
We stayed here for 2 nights. The Place is fantastic in the middle of the jungle. When you are in the pool monkeys "fly" on the trees around you. The manager is simply...The Best! Helpful and nice. He spent 2 days trying to contact Delta Airlines that lost our suitcases. Sleeping with th e sounds of the birds is amazing ... The breakfast is very good with fruits and typical costarican dishes. With taxi boat you can join Tortugruero Village in 3 minutes. The only little problem is with the water..never hot..but is so hot outside...What doesn't matter. Not expensive.
The grounds and pool here are beautiful. And one of the highlights of our trip was seeing the white-faced monkeys here! In the morning they came down from the trees and were playing, going through the trash bins, and in general being entertaining. This hotel shares the ground with two other hotels and you are able to use their pools and bars as well as the ones for Rana Roja. Nice pools and the dinners were good. My only complaint is that the room itself could have been nicer. The beds were not very comfortable and the bathroom was in need of cleaning/repair. But for me, the less-nice room was made up for with the excitement of seeing all the wildlife!
We stayed here for four nights in a bungalow and loved it. The owners are friendly and accommodating and some of the most hospitable we have met. We like being based away from town as the setting is nicer and the water taxi (2 dollars per person) is just 3-4 mins. Lots of wildlife was nearby. There is a nice pool and you can also use the pool at nearby Evergreen Lodge which is great. Our suggested improvements would be to make dinner more romantic, maybe dim the lights and add candles. Also, upgrade the bathrooms and make the bungalows air tight as we did get a number of animals coming in (bugs etc). Finally, I would advise that all guests be given info on tours etc when arriving as we were somewhat confused about things when we arrived and did not meet the owners. We like being woken up by the howler monkeys above the cabin. If you don't then bring ear plugs!
The rooms are located in the jungle so only sort of nature all aroudn you. On that side no complaints. The rooms themselves are basis and ok. Bathrooms do need attention since several rooms had leaks (even one big one giving a flood in 3 rooms beside it!) The big minus for me during our stay here was the food. That should be of better quality, quantity and of better heat! Staff does work hard and are friendly. The pool areas are really nice, bar is also good (nice cocktails and cool beers). Take a water taxi to go the de village and you can walk there a trail behind the beach in the N.P.. These beaches are well known for the several species of turtles. Seeying those by night was just magical. Also take a tour trough the canals to see lots of wildlife. But don't forgert to walk in the evening trough the forrest and gardens of these lodges themselves. You can allready spot lots of wildlife closeby!
The first time we went to Rana Roja was seven years ago when the friendly owners just opened the place. It was so nice to be back and to experience the same hospitality. There is a new swimming pool now with a nice deck with relaxing chairs and a bar with river view. The rooms are spacious and in the midst of the jungle. The howler monkeys wake you up in the morning. The restaurant serves three delicious meals a day. Thanks Guiselle and Gerardo! We had a great time again!
We spent two nights here, after a night in Tortuguero town - it felt like a good combination, as we had enough time to explore the town and work out where we wanted to eat each night. Rana Roja and Evergreen seem to be conjoined twin lodges. There are separate landing spots for each of them, and separate restaurants - but otherwise you seem to move from one to the other without realising ! We made use of the facilities mentioned in other reviews - we took a kayak out for a paddle, we went for a little walk in the jungle (which has seen better days), and we swam in the different pools. Whilst the manager is very friendly and helpful, you do need to ask for things. Breakfast was excellent - very fresh. We didn't eat dinner here - we got a water taxi into town both evenings. On the last morning, we managed to get the ferry to pick us up on the way past - which was a lot more relaxed than going into town and waiting there.
Well, this is Tortuguero, so you won't get an Intercontinental experience, but a jungle experience. The rooms are the minimum. Bed, bathroom and a fan. The hotel is not in the village, so you'll need to taxi (boat) to get into town, but the ambience is wonderfull, by the river. Pool could get extra chairs. The people there are great!
We are currently staying at this hotel with a group of 24 persons and many of us had money stolen from our rooms between breakfast and lunch. Around 100 dollars were stolen from each rather than all the money so that most persons would have been unaware of the theft immediately unless they were warned by two of us who had zippers on our purses torn by the thiefs. We are still awaiting for an explanation from the hotel owner as to how they are dealing with this situation. If you go to this hotel I highly recommend that you carry all your money with you. Phones, ipads and laptops were not stolen.
