Greensboro in North Carolina is commonly nicknamed “The Gate”, which pays homage to its position as the gateway to the American South. Like much of the South, Greensboro and the entire Piedmont area are replete with beautiful nature, historically rich landmarks, and, of course, finger-licking good food! Given North Carolina’s limited public transportation, most locals and visitors rely on the well-connected interstate system to get around. So, once you land at the Piedmont Triad International Airport, pick up your right rental car. Having one is key to making the most of your trip to the Piedmont!

What to See in Greensboro

When it comes to your first stop in the Piedmont area, not much can top the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, located in the heart of Greensboro’s historic district. In 1960, four North Carolina A&T University students participated in nonviolent “sit-ins” at the racially segregated diner located in the Woolworth department store. When the students were denied service and were asked to leave, they remained seated to protest segregation policies. Their courage sparked a national movement, which led to sit-ins in 55 cities across 13 states. Located at the exact site of the Woolworth sit-ins, the International Civil Rights Center and Museum explores this and other important moments of the American Civil Rights Movement. Just six years old, the Museum has opened to universal acclaim from visitors, earning an already cemented reputation as a must-visit landmark.

Greensboro’s sister city of Winston-Salem is the artistic hub of the Piedmont Area, and nowhere is this more evident than in the nationally-registered Reynolda House Museum of American Art. Lying just 30 miles east of Greensboro’s Civil Rights Center, the Reynolda House is located on the historic estate of the Reynolds family, one of North Carolina’s oldest and wealthiest families. The House on its own is worthy of a visit, sitting on 1,067 acres of land and containing several gardens, a greenhouse swimming pool, a bowling alley, and its own private movie theater. Inside the house sits one of the most revered permanent collections of American paintings. Spanning three centuries of American art, the collection includes works from the likes of Edward Hicks and Thomas Cole.

Finally, you can’t leave North Carolina without sampling what is arguably its most famous natural resource, a barbecue. North Carolina is famous for its particular brand of barbecue sauce, which uses vinegar, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper as its base. You can’t go wrong with any of the hundreds of barbecue options located throughout the Piedmont area. However, especially check out Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q for an old-school, counter-serving option that’ll keep you coming back for seconds and thirds!
