Festivals and fireworks keep North Wildwood glowing

One of three towns that make up the East's biggest beach resort, North Wildwood is a long established summer resort with a unique character. Located on the southern tip of New Jersey, it is a summer staple for families along the Atlantic Coast. The Wildwood beaches combine to form a five-mile stretch, which makes it the quintessential Jersey Shore location. Unlike other spots close by, North Wildwood is very quiet and family-oriented.

Things to see and do
North Wildwood beach and boardwalk

All of the Wildwood beaches are free for visitors. The powdery, white sand beach is pristine, and swimming in the Atlantic is supervised by local lifeguards. Throughout the year, there are numerous events held right on the beach, including sand castle competitions, concerts, monster truck races and championship soccer games. It is a wonderful place to enjoy nature, soak in the sun or get wet in the ocean.

The famous boardwalk offers attractions for visitors of all ages. The young and young-at-heart will enjoy the water parks, carnival games and food. You cannot leave without tasting authentic pieces of James' saltwater taffy. Off-season and early mornings are a great time to rent a surrey bike and travel the boards or explore the town. During the day, be sure you use the tramcar for a handy shortcut to get from one end of the boardwalk to the other.

North Wildwood historical sights

This region is rich in history. One of the must-visit spots is the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse. It has been a beacon of safety since the early 17th century. Today, it is established as a museum that displays educational materials and memorabilia.

North Wildwood dining

North Wildwood offers fine dining establishments, fast food, pizza places and a selection of ice-cream shops for dessert. Hot-dog lovers will enjoy "Maui Dogs," which were featured on the television show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Rick's Seafood House is also a local favorite. There is no better place to find fresh fish than at Rick's. When money is no object, the Establishment at 100 offers a high-end atmosphere and delicious American cuisine.

Entertainment

The boardwalk is a great source of free entertainment in North Wildwood. Fireworks go off every Friday night during the summer, and festivals happen frequently. You may enjoy craft shows, car shows, and a number of family entertainment venues throughout the year. After a lazy day at the beach, enjoy some drinking and dancing at one of the local clubs or sports bars.

Where to stay

As the premier beach destination of New Jersey, hotels line the streets and offer something for everyone. More upscale hotels, like the Acropolis, provide superb ocean views and penthouse units. The area is filled with clean and affordable motels as well. It is a definite throwback to the 1960s, when Wildwood soared in popularity. One family favorite is the Roman Holiday motel, which provides clean rooms a short walk from the boardwalk. North Wildwood hotels are close to the action, but away from the crowds. During the peak of the summer season, expect to pay a few hundred dollars for a room each night. When planning your trip, keep in mind that most area hotels require a minimum three-night stay. During the off-season, rooms much less expensive can be found for under $100.

Special events

North Wildwood holds numerous seasonal events, including music festivals, fishing tournaments and local gatherings. For instance, each August, North Wildwood holds an annual Flea Market. September brings the Irish Fall festival, which is kicked off with a golf tournament. Food, vendors and live entertainment are plentiful. At Christmas, the Greater Wildwood Jaycees sponsor a Christmas parade from North Wildwood to Wildwood Crest.

Best time to visit

Beach lovers flock to North Wildwood during the summer months. This is the time of year that gathers the most crowds. However, events are scheduled all year-round. If you prefer cooler weather and more privacy, temperatures are mild in the fall and spring. Even though snow is not uncommon during winter, this area is usually spared large snowstorms. Winter temperatures average 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Since most businesses on the boardwalk close after Labor Day, it may be wise to visit between May and September.
