Parador De Cangas De Onis4.0 out of 5.0

Cangas de Onis was a stopover on the way to Santiago. It is an ancient Monastery with a small chapel, which is still in use. The Parador has a refined, tranquil setting on the banks of the river Sella. Our room, which overlooked the river was well appointed and large. The restaurant was excellent and neither the food nor wine was over priced. Breakfast was a well stocked buffet plus hot dishes if wanted and was of a very high standard. Service throughout the hotel was unobtrusive and excellent
We particularly liked the monastery building and the setting by the river. The information boards were interesting and we enjoyed exploring the chapel and old granary. Our room was a superior room in the original building which was spacious and elegant. It faced in the direction of the road so we would have preferred a quieter room. The dining room was in the new part of the hotel but still had a good ambience. The food and service was excellent, they managed to produce a tasty meal I could eat which is not easy as I suffer from severe food intolerances. We also enjoyed the walk by the river and an early morning trip to the lakes. We missed the train ride to the mountains because it was too crowded by the time we got there. This Parador is an easy drive from Bilbao so made a good first stop on our Parador tour. We are Amigos(it costs nothing to sign up) and as always the Gastro Amigos package is the best deal(241 euros in superior room). We found it difficult to book the HB option on the website but the hotel responded quickly to a follow up email.
Parador is located in beautiful surroundings near the mountains. Cuisine was great and service too. Room was spacious and very clean. Would recommend trip to Lagos de Covadonga early in the morning because it could growded later during the day.
This was our first parador on a tour of Northern Spain, taking in 6 in total. The rest have a lot to live uo to! We loved how the new building which housed the restaurant & most rooms merged with the original monastery via a glass walkway. We enjoyed learning about its history via the information boards. Walking into the chapel at night was so atmospheric. Our en suite room was spacious, clean; well equipped. We liked the firm bed & pillows & our balcony. An English speaking news channel other than CNBC would be good. The evening meal was delicious especially the venison, though portions were on the large size for us! There was a good selection of wines at reasonable prices. Do take the walk along the river into Cangas, only takes 30 minutes. I can recommend the parador 5 night card which gives you a 20% discount on dinner.
This hotel is excellent, its in a great location to explore the surrounding area, the staff are very friendly and helpful. The quality of the food in the restaurant is very good, as is the service, and the breakfast experience is just as good. We will hopefully return to this hotel in the future
The female staff member of the reception desk gave us a very warm welcome and was a great help with our baggage. Our room was big, modern and comfortable. The same was applying to our bathroom. However three negative points to improve: the taps of the washstands are placed in a very uncomfortable position resulting some difficulties with washing your hands; the shower head has soon to be replaced; the grating of the outlet in the ceiling of the bathroom is not clean. Wining and dining is excellent with very friendly staff in the restaurant and the cafetaria. A great compliment for the waiter Ramon Palacios.
We've stayed at this parador twice now with our two dogs. Animals are welcome in the basic room on the ground floor. they even provide beds, food and a kennel for four-legged friends. having a room with a small terrace that opens onto the gardens works really well, just keep an eye out for the robotic lawnmower working 24/7 in all weathers. The floor in the room, the bathroom and some of the furniture was showing its age, but it was still very comfortable, just make sure you don't get room 101 as its right next to the kitchens, as they start work early preparing the extensive breakfast! The hotel atmosphere is pleasant and there is plenty to see. A Benedictine chapel, well presented excavations of the ancient 8th century monastery and sympathetic public areas. The manager has started to do guided tours or the site in Spanish which are very comprehensive. there are other activities such as visits to the ancient salmon fisheries. The bar is pleasant but a bit low key. I wouldn't describe it as inviting but maybe it was just the timing and the guests when we were there. You get a free drink if you are a friend of the paradores I tried out the massage therapy which was excellent, good value for one hour. I was slightly phased by the location, as its just outside the restaurant, but they completely close off the corridor during the session so no worries about being the pre dinner entertainment. So to the restaurant. Having travelled quite a lot in Spain I'd rate this restaurant very highly. A warm welcome, attentive service and an enticing menu help to make this a really good dining experience. the food is not fussy but well prepared and overall good value. The wine list is very good incorporating a good selection at reasonable prices. You have a choice of dining inside in the bright and cheerful dining room or 'outside' one the glass enclosed terrace which is heated in cooler months. The hotel has a small cinema and there are film screenings from 11 pm as part of the continuing evenings entertainment. Overall it has always been an enjoyable stay in a fabulous historical setting. If you don't have pets you have the option of the more luxurious rooms in the main monastery building which are very sumptuous.
The property is very nice, the location is great and the (obviously) historic nature of the parador is very cool. But...... despite being advertised as having Air Conditioning, there was no Air Conditioning during our stay. The reason given was that it was cool outside. Yes, it was cool outside, but it was 26 C (79 F) in our room. You couldn't just run the fan, since it wouldn't run with out heating the air. Open the window? - Yes, but there wasn't any circulation. And, our room's window (room 117) opened up over the parking lot and is directly over the entrance - so, it was quite noisy. Be aware that rooms 118 and 119 also face the parking lot. The upside is that they did bring us a small fan that was helpful.
This parador has a lovely setting near Cangas de Onis. The rooms are spacious clean and comfortable and the reception staff friendly and welcoming. Although most of the standard rooms are in a modern extension this had been sympatheticly done to complement the original buildings. The restaurant was one of the better parador ones and the service was good.
all good can highly recommend paradores as being consistently good and highly interesting properties to stay in the Spanish people and staff so good and friendly we just love Spain only down side the ferry all the queuing and delays
