I have been there during August 2017. Quite central, the two bedroom I have stayed in was quite nice, clean and with plenty of space. Bathrooms were also cleaned. short walk distance to almost anywhere in Cairns
Me and my daughter just stayed at this hotel for 3 nights 1st Nov to 4th Nov, we found this hotel absolutely fine, its basic but does the job, we found cairns extremely hot so the aircon in the room was a god send, the receptionist Cheryl was brilliant, she helped us out loads, very knowledgeable on trips and helped with bus routes etc, all staff were friendly and it's always a bonus when free breakfast is included, i would stay here again as very central and close to everything, the lagoon is only a 5 min walk away.
We chose this hotel as it was smack bang in the middle of the city area & close the esplanade. All we needed was a bed with a fairly easy walk to the Cruise ship terminal the next day. There were 3 of us, each with a decent single bed. The room was very basic, however it was spacious (.....huge, actually) and very clean. Our flight in was early, well ahead of check in time; the hotel does not have a luggage room although it does have some coin operated luggage lockers. When we did get to check in, the one and only lift couldn't be used for a few hours as they were doing non-essential maintenance (a bit of spray can painting on the kick boards) and there was no alternative to get heavy luggage up the stairs to the room. The pool is tucked away in an uninviting area with car parks/service access, air con plants etc; but it is a pool and it was clean. Wifi was non existent. The hotel advertised free wifi, but they didn't actually have any (although they were in the process of installing their own system). The only available wifi is the fee council run wifi if you go out to the verandas where you could get a signal. The Irish pub on street level (Shields St side); I'm not sure if the pub is a part of Hides Hotel or a separate business. It's a good pub with plenty of atmosphere and good pub food. The "heritage" section of hotel rooms above the pub area would surely be noisy, although our room was at the back in another wing and was very quiet. Complimentary brekky (cereals/ toast /boiled eggs/ juice / instant coffee & teabags) was basic but perfectly fine. Brekky out on the verandah was nice start to the day. The streetscape in the mall area around the hotel is nicely done.
Needed some quick and easy and the hide ticked all the boxes. It was easy it was quick and the breakfast was on point. I would recommend it to anyone on a budget looking for somewhere convenient.also it is located close to the beach and to the nightlife.
Why a VG rating for a hotel?, this ticked all the boxes for us as a short stay, Location CBD, atmosphere, clean, great little brekky the first floor verandah to sit outside, we stayed on the second floor with a shared bathroom everything was clean ,Room-Flat screen TV ,tea/coffee making facilities, mini-fridge,wash basin and Air con.You can smoke on the first floor on the verandah/balcony. Would not suit young families however kids 13 and older would enjoy the area It has night life that goes until 0500 however it did not bother us.Check out their web site as it is very popular pub In reference to being a bit dated this is a 100 year old pub that is great for atmosphere we loved the old look, step back in time and enjoy Hides if you like old pubs.
We stayed in the newer part as I phoned them to say we were a family and I heard it was noisy. It was great, nothing fancy that's for sure, but clean and comfortable. Breaky was eggs cereal and toast. It was very Central and I would definitely stay there again for the price.
Awesome location within walking distance to all the main attractions in cairns really! Very old building which is huge and slightly dated but is reflected in the price really. Perfect for what we were after though. Breakfast was very basic and our room did overlook a noisy restaurant with a band or something but we were part of the noise on our second night there anyway.
Hides Hotel offers free breakfast which consist of four types of cereal, boiled eggs, toast, tea, coffee and juice. All you can eat. On the ground floor, the Irish pub plays loud music from 9:00pm to 3:00am in the morning, Monday to Sunday. About one hundred metres away there is also Wool shed night club which is also open to the late hours in the morning. The council workers spend a couple of hours everyday cleaning up the street at about five thirty. Then there is the occasional fight just the hotel and people playing loud music in their cars. The rooms look very nice on their website but they are not cleaned properly. The room was not vacuumed, fan had not been cleaned, window had bird droppings over it, the air condition made a rattling noise when turned on and there were dirty coffee cups in the room. Bird droppings on the balcony rails where you eat breakfast. No smoking in the room. Any unwanted fire alarms set from you room will result in a $1,080 fire department fee.No Wi-Fi. .
The Hides is located very conveniently to food, dining and the Marina Esplanade. Staffs at the hotel are very helpful. However, the rooms are not well maintained. We stayed in two different rooms. The first room was the 'Heritage' category which is just above a bar. Very noisy into the wee hours. The second room was quieter.
I can't comment on the newer part of the Hotel so this review relates to the Heritage section. I should have heeded the advice from other reviews regarding noise. I can sleep through almost anything so I didn't expect it to be an issue. A group of locals congregate in the mall directly below the rooms and I can only assume this is every night based on other reviews. They are drunk and they fight and scream (and I mean SCREAM) abuse all night. It started at around 7:30pm. The police attended the area several times and made arrests throughout the night but the screaming and shouting went until around 3-4am until (like the other reviews stated) the street sweeper starts below the room and goes for about 2 hours. Again I can normally sleep through anything but these are old rooms with open glass louvres and there is zero protection from the noise. At around 6 when the street sweeper finally stopped and I thought I might get atleast an hours sleep, breakfast began on the balcony directly outside the rooms, plates banging & crashing and people talking 2 metres from your bed. Aside from the absolutely RIDICULOUS levels of noise the rooms are not worth anywhere near what they charge. Should be priced at $50 per night. Hard thin pillows, only a top sheet on the bed, no duvet or blanket, run down old musty rooms.
