I don’t like leaving negative reviews as I know that things can happen and it’s not always the managements fault. And in this case you can’t fault the staff. But my god what a dump this place is. Hideous dirty old outdated interior with paint peeling off the walls. Terrible beds, absolutely no thought or decoration in the rooms, chipped floors and long never ending “Shinning” style corridors. The only salvation is the balcony looking out over the Main Street as you won’t want to spend a second longer in your room than you have too. And trust me the balcony isn’t any cleaner. This place really isn’t value for money, yes it’s a cheap hotel but there is cheap and then there’s this place. Budget hotels would be offended to call this place budget. Better value for money to be had else where in town. Won’t be returning ever again. Thank god those 4 nights are over.
My travel group booked several rooms at the Hide Hotel. While the central location was nice, the place could really use some updates. Ie) popcorn ceilings circa 1970 and a broken shower head. I'd likely stay elsewhere next time I'm in Cairns
Ive just spend a week at this hotel and would recommend it its not posh but clean and comfortable plus it is very central to everything staff are very friendly and the light breakfast they serve starts your day. Very handy opposite is a woolworths.
The Reception Staff were extremely helpful and very welcoming and cheerful. To reiterate Caroline B's review, the Hides Hotel is full of character (not luxury) but still very comfortable. Loved the fact that all we had to do was step outside the front entrance and there was Cairns in all it's glory. We were a little put out by the fact that they wanted to charge us to mind our cases for a couple of hours after morning check out and when the airport bus picked us up. Will stay there again!
I stayed here for two nights on separate occasions and both times I was upgraded to a double room with an ensuite. The rooms were clean and adequate as were the bathrooms. The staff were very helpful too.
We were greeted by the friendly helpful reception staff who upgraded our room lots of help with local questions. Hotel is full of character not luxury but very comfortable. Bathrooms are clean. Very central location
Hides Hotel, Cairns. Old fashioned hotel. Rooms comfortable, bathroom clean and adequate, shower, no bath. Fridge and ac in room, although we were "upgraded". The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is included, cereal, toast, boiled egg, coffee and tea. Our room was at the end of a 100 metre corridor, we paced it out, and was on the first floor overlooking Grafton street. Cairns is a clean, vibrant city. The vibrancy ends at about 2 am, and the cleaning commences at around 4.15am. The garbage truck, street cleaning truck, and a leaf blower (sounds like a chainsaw) can all be heard at this time. The windows are not double glazed, so you hear every noise. Our friends bought earplugs from the pharmacy across the road, and found them very useful. This is the big advantage of the hotel, it is in the heart of the city. Many restaurants, cafes and bars are only steps away. The hotel doesn't have a bar, but Woolies and its bottle shop are almost directly opposite, and you can have an early evening sharpener, or a nightcap on the veranda where you have your breakfast, and enjoy the ambiance. There is a pool, and they do have parking for $Au 10 per day.
Booked here for 6 nights after finding a good rate online. I check in and the room looks basic but fine. I try to take a nap but hear lots of noise outside. I open the window and see hotel employees (cleaners) hanging out, smoking marijuana and listening to music. I head out and when I come back to my room, they are still doing this until 2 am, preventing me from sleeping. I talked about it with reception and they said they would take care of it but this kept happening every day. My rate included daily housekeeping but my room was not cleaned one day. The next day, I asked twice to reception if someone could come clean my room but nobody came. Finally, after travelling for a while, I decided to do laundry at the hotel. My clothes came out with white and blue stains. The front desk offered to refund the 3$ I paid so that I could do another load which I did, but the clothes came back out with the same stains. They are now ruined. I talked about it calmly and nicely with the front desk who only said I could talk to the manager, without telling me when he would be in. Very disappointed in my stay here. I am not a difficult traveler at all, having even stayed on remote islands with no electricity and running water with no problem, but if I'm staying for a basic hotel, I want basic service, not mediocre. Also note that you will need to pay to store your luggage if you arrive too early or want them to hold your things after check out. Ridiculous. There are better options in Cairns.
I stayed at Hides whilst on my last holiday in Cairns in 2014 and reported it was getting a bit run down looking with threadbare carpets and in need of a face lift. I stayed in room 217 after receiving a free upgrade to an en-suite room which was freshly painted and was quite comfortable. Desk staff were friendly on check-in, however I wonder on a relatively cool Cairns day why the ceiling fans and air-con in the foyer were running flat out. I'd also like to see some of the main verandah supports checked at ground level, as they don't look to be a strong as they used to be.
I stayed for two nights in a Heritage Room, it was $56.44 per night. The room was ok for two nights. There were no windows and air conditioner very very loud. The room was off the balcony so the street noise was s little loud and the street cleaner did wake me up early each morning. The room did not have a private bathroom. For the price ok. It was clean and safe but for a longer stay I would choose more up market
