Ideal hotel for those wanting a central location. 15 minutes from airport by taxi ($23) Booking in was quick and easy, staff very helpful. Room on the first floor was spacious and clean but basic. No extras such as tea, coffee etc. Bed was huge and very comfortable, air con good. Self service laundry facilities were available (at a cost) Breakfast the following day was served on the first floor balcony overlooking the pedestrian area and garden. The breakfast consisted of a plentiful supply of boiled eggs, bread, cereal, juices, tea and coffee and was included in the price of the room. The original hotel had been expanded overtime but a lot of the original hotel still remains.
I recently had a week at Hides The Location was central and perfect for my needs. There was nothing flashy at all about this hotel but everything worked and I really had no complaints Except the WIFI in the far reaches of the hotel was somewhat poor This is a large old rambling place. The Breakfast that was included is fairly spartan but it is adequate to get you going. And of course surprisingly the hotel has a pool tucked away if you are not after the normal glitz then you will find this adequate to most requirements
I stayed here for 3 nights. The first was in a heritage double room. It was awful. The curtains were broken and didn’t cover the window. One of the panes of glass in the bathroom was broken. The room was right above the pub so very loud. The air conditioner was ancient so also very loud. The shower had black mould along the bottom. The tea cups were not clean. The room was definitely not worth the price and needs to be restored/cleaned up a lot! Breakfast was basic but pigeons were everywhere and in an attempt to get rid of them the staff sprayed them with water, which ended up on my breakfast too. Not very appealing. In contrast, the room that I stayed in for the second and third night was lovely. Still basic but very clean and comfortable. This was in the newer part of the hotel. If you are looking for budget hostel type accommodation I’d recommend booking in this part of the hotel. The common areas were ok. Unfortunately no air con in the hallways so it was like waking into a sauna. The heritage lift was fun to see and the stairway was beautiful. It’s a shame that they haven’t restored the rooms to make the most of the original features as it could be a really cool place to stay.
Booked through Expedia.com which stated in was an all amenities room.. no working aircon, no toilet , dirty carpet and a bed which sinks into the floor a view which looks on to another wall. Decided to book another hotel after and not even after to be changed room or a refund. Staff were rude as hell when asking for my deposit back. And wasn’t even offered an apology. These older rooms I’m the building should be classed as hostel rooms. Not a hotel paid over a huge red Australian dollars. Worst spent morning new ever
Stayed here for 5 nights in November. Overall a great stay and experience. The hotel is dated but very clean and comfortable. The rooms are basic but have everything you need. The pool is clean and cool. The balcony on the first floor is a great place to sit and have a drink in the evening. Staff are great and always happy to help with anything. The location right in the heart of the city makes it a perfect choice for all types of travelers. I would highly recommend this property and will be back on my next visit
I booked a family room for our stay. I have always wanted to stay above an old pub and this place was great value. Let’s face it, when you are on holiday, you aren’t staying in the room, you just need a place to sleep. The beds were comfortable, the air conditioning was lovely and cold, the bathroom did its job and basic breakfast (cereal, toasts, juice, boiled eggs, tea, coffee and water) was included. Even the local Willy wagtail perched on my hand to share some egg yolk, a delight for us all. Everywhere is within walking distance, loads of aboriginal art and light displays at night. There is a pool for use but walk to the esplanade and hides also has a parking garage for $10 a day to put your car. We enjoyed it very much. The one thing I will say is, central Cairns has nightclubs so expect a bit some beats when going to bed before midnight. 15 mins to airport and Kuranda skyrail.
Pros: Friendly accommodating staff Location Included continental breakfast Historic building Cons Musty smell in room Ants on countertops Dated Overall an acceptable stay for the price. Good for budget travelers who don’t want to stay at a backpacker hostel.
I was recently displaced by Qantas whilst traveling from Weipa to Townsville. Problems with the flight to Cairns resulted in approximately 20 passengers missing flights to Townsville and Brisbane. In someone’s wisdom we got booked into the Hides Hotel Cairns. The experience from start to finish was horrendous. Whilst advertised as 3 Star, I would be surprised if it met the standards of most backpackers. We were informed on check in that we had to leave credit card details in case we ‘smashed up’ the room. The receptionist could only be described as a horrible person with an even worse attitude. We were then informed that the $50 voucher for food from Qantas could not be redeemed in the hotel as there was no restaurant. She did try and come up with a plan, arranging for food to be made available at the questionable Vietnamese restaurant next door. This was not going to be suitable for most people but especially for the mother traveling alone with 3 babies. The receptionist informed us that it was not her problem it was an issue for Qantas Upon walking to the room, it was apparent the historical photos of the hotel may have been an accurate representation of its present state. The room - whilst it had undergone a facelift, it was a very poor attempt. With old furniture, chipping cupboards and rusty bathroom surfaces, my threshold was reached when discovering a Matt of hair on the wall of the shower as I was preparing to wash. It was evident that the shower had not been cleaned in some time. A call to the very unfriendly receptionist resulted in a room change, but I would have to walk the 500 meters to reception to get the key then return to move my luggage. After explaining my frustration, receptionist said, “if you’ve got a problem, I’ll bloody bring it myself”! The new room - again hair in the shower and on the floor, albeit a smaller amount. The tv wouldn’t change channels, the WiFi wouldn’t connect and then there was the holes in the towels. This was the worst hotel experience I’ve had. I have brought it to Qantas’ attention, which I am taking further, however they have indicated that they will never use Hides Hotel Cairns again to accommodate passengers.
I have been there during August 2017. Quite central, the two bedroom I have stayed in was quite nice, clean and with plenty of space. Bathrooms were also cleaned. short walk distance to almost anywhere in Cairns
Me and my daughter just stayed at this hotel for 3 nights 1st Nov to 4th Nov, we found this hotel absolutely fine, its basic but does the job, we found cairns extremely hot so the aircon in the room was a god send, the receptionist Cheryl was brilliant, she helped us out loads, very knowledgeable on trips and helped with bus routes etc, all staff were friendly and it's always a bonus when free breakfast is included, i would stay here again as very central and close to everything, the lagoon is only a 5 min walk away.
