The room was very clean and spacious. Silvia and Klaus were lovely and very helpful, so no complaints there. However, as I got room #8 facing the train track and church tower, it got noisy sometimes at night. Breakfast was not a big spread but still good. Loved the big and thick towels. Wifi connection was quite limited/slow and mobile connection in Boppard generally is not great. But good for going off the grid.
The manageress was welcoming. We found parking an issue having to park down the road at at parking station. Dragging our bags up stairs due to no lift a negative for us doing a long trip with bags 20+ kilos and bad backs. We should have reviewed before allowing our travel agent to book. Ot the hotels fault. Train noise did not bother us but hard beds did not make for good sleep. The owner made a good breakfast but for us we would not stay again as it not meet with our needs. We were told our hotel's would be at least 3 stars and this was not.
We stay only one night and wish I could stay longer. The room was clean and renovated so as bathroom. Towels were very soft and thick! Wish they have a thick or blackout curtains on the window. We were hardly fall sleep because from the outside lights. Breakfast was pretty good. The owner made us fresh and warm scramble eggs. Bread was warm and fresh so as coffee, too. The building was old but well-maintained. And good location for sure!
if you want a typical german warm welcome you will get it here, lovely location, few minutes walk to town centre and rhine, its opposite roman ruins but in heart of the town, the hotel is traditional german rustic style, especialy the restaurant, first time we went we had the luxury room on top floor, its lovely, but no lift,so last summer we had a very nice twin on the first floor, Sylvie and her family and staff made us so welcome, like home from home, the food is very good, all home cooked, the buffet breakfast is huge too, such great value,
I stayed at the Hotel Sonnehof for two nights while visiting the Christmas markets along the Rhine. The little hotel is part of a small restaurant and is about a ten minute walk from the train station. There are only a few rooms... it is more like a B and B than a hotel. When I arrived, the proprietoress was at the Xmas market in the town square. Luckily I had emailed her what time I would be arriving by train. When I arrived at the hotel, everything was locked shut and a sign on the door informed me (in German, which I could not read) where she was. However, just as I was despairing what I would do, she came up and street and all was well after that. The hotel is right across from some Roman ruins and my room overlooked the site. A very interesting view out of my window! The room was very clean, modern and functional. The bed was extremely comfortable. The hotel is close to the rail lines ( all towns along the Rhine may be the same) so one should expect some noise from the passing trains. You can't really get away from that if you are staying in this area). My breakfasts were cooked to order if I wished. As well, I could select from the buffet. I also ate dinner in the hotel restaurant one evening upon my return from a Xmas market. I discovered that there were almost no other restaurants open at that time of the year in the town! The proprietoress speaks English very well and we chatted each morning as I ate breakfast. Would I stay here again? Yes, it was very reasonable and I ate well and slept ok.
Sonnenhof is typical of small B&Bs I have visited along the Rhine River. The proprietress is very friendly. The rooms are oddly configured as the ancient architecture was adapted to modern sensibilities requiring in-room toilet and bathing facilities. Obviously, at the prices charged it does not include air conditioning. I am not sure if wifi is included or not--a sign in the room promised "free WI LAN," but although my iToy could see the signal, I could never get it to connect. It wasn't so critical to me that I bothered to pursue it further.
During late August 2013 I stayed at Hotel Sonnenhof in Boppard for four nights. The hotel is located one half kilometer from the Bahnhof and just two short blocks from the Marktplatz. My small single room was one of the newly renovated rooms, but very clean, comfortable and reasonable in price. The breakfast buffet was excellent and well presented with cereals, breads, jams, cheeses, meats and even scrambled eggs. I had one dinner in the restaurant and it was excellent. Frau Ullmann was a very gracious hostess and saw to all my needs.
Having read previous reviews, I do think some people expect far too much for what is a very reasonable price. We picked this hotel for proximity to the train station and town, as a stopover point on a train holiday to points further east. We were warmly welcomed, found our rooms comfortable and slept well before departing onward. It is true the rooms are not huge compared to many German hotels but were perfectly adequate and our beds were very comfortable. There is some train noise but it did not bother us. The breakfast was very nice with plenty of choice. We ate in the hotel restaurant in the evening- the service was good, the food was quite adequate for the price. We wanted a stopover again on our return two weeks later and because of the first good experience decided to book again. We once again had a warm welcome, and the manager immediately agreed to our request for breakfast ten minutes early so we could catch a train. We ate elsewhere on the evening this time for a change. Boppard is a very pleasant, relaxing and compact town on the Rhine, with great views from the waterfront.
We were on a driving trip through Germany and found ourselves in need of a hotel somewhere between Koblenz and Bingen. The more moderately priced hotels in Koblenz were booked, so we took a minute and looked for hotels in the area. Hotel Sonnenhof popped up on Bookings.com, price was right so we booked it. We drove to Boppard and after navigating the narrow streets with our GPS constantly advising "Recalculating..." we arrived at the hotel about 6 pm. The front desk area was closed but we rang the bell and were promptly and warmly greeted, and given the keys to our room. There was no elevator so we schlepped our bags upstairs to a typical tourist class european hotel, Room neat and clean but small. The weather at the time was warm, so we opened the window. As our room faced the street the noise from the railway and the clang of the bells at the church made for a noisy night. All in all very comfortable, met our needs for a place to crash while on the road. We arrived late and left early the next morning for Bingen for a day cruise on the Rhine from Bingen to Koblenz.
We stayed here in Oct. 2010. Our room was pretty small and the bathroom was compact -to say the least. There is a big step up/down into the shower. Bathroom was a bit old fashioned, I would say. The t.v. was on the bedside table, which meant you couldn't really watch it while lying in bed. A lot of stairs to climb to get to our room. However, the breakfasts were very good and the owner, Sylvia, was very pleasant. The hotel is right in the centre and everything can be reached on foot, so you don't need a car. It is close to the railway line, so if your window is open, you will hear the trains. We dined here one evening and the food was good. There are lots of other good eateries in the town.
