Comfort Suites2.5 out of 5.0

We planned on staying at this hotel on our way to Florida. This place is filthy!! We were first put in a room where the toilet didn't work so we asked to switch rooms. The room we were moved to had cockroaches. Within five minutes I had asked for a refund and we were out the door to the Fairfield Inn up the street. The owners should be ashamed of even offering this place up for rooms.
Our family was going to have a 13 hour drive with our son, daughter in law and three grandchildren, ages two, six & seven years old. I reserved two rooms at this Comfort Suites in Pelham, Alabama because this was more than half way to Destin, Florida and should have been a good place to rest for the night. The other major reason for booking this hotel is that it advertised an indoor swimming pool and a check out time of noon. The indoor pool would have been a great amenity. Swimming in the morning would have been a lot of fun for our three grandchildren before starting the second part of our drive. We arrived around 10 PM, after driving for 8 hours, checked in and went to our two rooms. There were two styrofoam containers, with most of the remaining dinners from the previous guests, left in the turned off, smelling mini fridge. I took the dinners down to the front desk where the front desk person apologized and asked me for the room number so he could make a note for housekeeping. The TV did not turn on because the remote had dead batteries.I went back down to the front desk person and he replaced the batteries. In the morning, after breakfast, we went down to the indoor pool. The pool water had slime, scum, bugs and dirt floating on a large part of the top surface. We, along with another guest, complained to the front desk person and she said that the pool man must not have shown up. We believe that our grandchildren could have got sick if they went into this pool. My wife and I along with our son, daughter in law and our grandchildren were very disappointed. We checked out quickly and headed for Destin, Florida immediately. This hotel seemed worn and not well maintained. We have stayed at Comfort Inns& Suites in the past and most are very nice. This was a real disappointment and we would not recommend this Comfort Suites in Pelham, Alabama. I wish I would have considered and researched the Fairfield Inn by Marriott across the street.
By whatever means of transportation brings you to Pelham Alabama, just keep on movin'. Do not walk away from this hotel.....RUN AWAY. Better yet, if you are driving, you have a wide variety of alternate choices that will give you a better nights stay. After making a snack size popcorn for my wife, the microwave stopped working. After unplugging and replugging the power, letting the microwave cool down, it was obvious that the microwave was non-functional. Calling down to the front desk for a replacement......I just wanted a snack size bag of popcorn for myself....Kris at the front desk just said that she could not replace the device herself. The person that could handle it would only be in at 11 P.M. "We can wake you up to replace your microwave." After a moderate delay, she offered to change our room. This was after we had been in the room for 6 hours and completely unpacked. I don't think anyone would have offered to help us move for the same reason.....she didn't have anybody to help. Each room has a "Commitment to your satisfaction" info card that is printed on nice high-grade coated paper. It pledges "please let the front desk know without delay so we can make it right." So even though this pledge completely covers one side of the info card, the back side is blank and still usable. This makes the paper this pledge is printed on worth more than the pledge itself. It is to be noted that thee front desk person, Kris, never said they did not have a replacement, but that I would have to wait until after 11 P.M. to have a working unit in my room. I completely understand items failing, but I expect a replacement to be available. It seems that this Comfort Suite is severely understaffed. As I started this review, the American economic environment allows the consumers to determine the desirability of a product. For this Comfort Suite, the competition is too focused and too sharp to allow this unit to prosper. You can make a difference in the economic landscape of America. Once again, just keep on truckin' down the road, you will find a better room.
Large room that was very clean. Weird that there was no shower curtain! (That was not comfortable). Beds were comfortable. Breakfast area was very small. Coffee was lukewarm even after they brought out a new pot! We would return! We like clean!
I stayed here last night, Jan 28 2017. I was on the 4th floor and the internet in the room was barely useable. You couldnt listen to any video clips, sending a photo often failed, and you could get an occasional picture to send but the internet was slow as can be and kept going in and out, thus failing everything I tried to do. I tried to do a speednet in the room and it wouldnt even do the test. I went to the lobby internet-they have a computer and printer there and it was better than in the room. I tried several speed tests on that one and one came in at 3.9 and other tests failed there too. Im on the internet a LOT. Im one who does NOT live on a phone or like to do anything other than basic calling on a phone. It also costs me to get data over the phone as mine phone is a prepaid account. So when the internet wont work right thats the worst thing for me. If you are one that doesnt care about the internet then you should probably consider my rating a 3 plus. Other than the internet there is a plug on the desk as part of the lamp base. I plugged in a computer and thought it would be charging but it wasnt, No power in that plug there are other plugs to use though, so not that bad a thing but if you think you are going to have a charged up phone, battery or whatever and then find out nothing was charging in the morning as you leave that could put you in a bind. Best they tape over that plug. The hot water takes fover to reach the top floor too. I almost gave up and then it finally stated coming in. No real hot, but good enough to shower in. The room does have a mini fridge, micro, ironing board and iron. They out out lemon water in the lobby. the breakfast was pretty good compared to the other choice hotels I usually use which are the cheaper brands. I didnt like the choice of FOX news on in the lobby/breakfast area. A more moderate middle of the road station would be a better choice.
For the most part it was a nice place to spend the night. I thought the bed was a little soft and it looks like they are starting to redo some of it. But it was quite and slept well. It does need a little updating. Had all the little plugs for powering your computors and free wi-fi.
Positives: The beds were clean and comfortable (if you like a very soft bed). The breakfast was hot and there was plenty there. The lady working the breakfast area was able to tell us what was gluten free and what wasn't. WIFI was hot and fairly quick in the rooms as well as the lobby. Pool was warm. Work-out room looked to be in good working order. Front desk was friendly and helpful. Manager gave full consideration to the concerns I raised. She gave us a coupon for a free night but we live in Indiana and don't foresee another trip down that way for quite a while. Very close to restaurants and Walmart is right down the street. Negatives: Place needs updated badly. There are places throughout the hotel where the wallpaper is coming away from the wall at the seams. We had an ADA room because we needed room for 5 people to sleep. There was missing tile in our bathroom. The shower head had one setting and that one was partially clogged. The handheld shower head was completely clogged. The hide-a-bed was the first thing inside the room after the bathroom and when pulled out, left about a foot and a half in between the bed and the other furnishing. (Maybe need to swap it with the far bed). The couch / hide-a-bed had torn cushions. There was coffee left in the coffee maker and a partially used soap in the bathroom. The pool looked like the tile / sides and bottom of the pool had not been scrubbed in months. It had a layer of grime on it. The water was murky. The deck had been painted with a paint that was flaking. The paint job was very sloppy and partially covered one of the depth tiles. There were paint flecks on the towels when we dried off. This was the only place in the area that could handle 5 people to a room that night so we stayed there. In their defense, we were offered another room but we had already moved in to the room in question and were unpacked when I went most of this was noticed. This hotel has the potential to be a great hotel with an upgrade. A lot of the problems listed could be fixed with an upgrade.
Good use of space. Double bed which was comfortable, room was clean. Could never get room cool enough! Bathroom had good countertop space. The sink, tub, toilet are in the same room yet. The tub needed caulking and the tub floor was very stained. Quiet room, 2nd floor. Poor lighting for putting on makeup! Typical hotel breakfast. Restaurants like Cracker Burrell and fast food are nearby. I would stay here again.
This hotel is certainly worth the money. We stayed in a double bed suite. The room was very spacios, with a seperate sit in area, with a full sized love seat. The bathrooms were spacious. Absolutely loved the decor. There's a fitness center w/ an indoor pool. Swimming in October, amazing. The facility also had a laundry area, perfect for someone who travels a lot. Overall, I would rate the hotel 4 stars. Very impressed. Certainly affordable and worth it.
We stayed here twice when travelling to FL and it was great. The first room was a little dated but for the price it was perfect. The second room was adjoining to another room but modern looking. The breakfast was the best. The front desk ladies were friendly and helpful.
