PROS: - Communication before trip was responsive - Great rates in September: 55% off - Reasonably priced airport transfer - Very friendly, gracious staff - Amazing view (from my Riverside room, from the gazebo) - They've thought of everything in the room: screens on windows, AC, Keurig machine, refrigerator, nice pillows, quality bath products, 18-foot ceilings (estimate), unlimited filtered water, high-end materials (countertops, wood furniture, appliances, lighting, etc.) - Loved my big deck, overlooking the river (comfortable chairs + hammock) - Spacious indoor/outdoor bathroom was great. I don't want to shower indoors again - I ordered the quesadillas the first lunch and had it every day thereafter -- so good - Enjoyed kayaking (although the river was shallow in September so the distance was limited) - Very few insects in the room, which is saying a lot for being in the rainforest - Nice lobby, bar, and swimming pool for hanging out - A lot of interesting tours available - Other guests were cool, easy to talk to - Koi, turtles, peacocks, ducks onsite add to the fun and atmosphere - Amazing landscaping, flora - This is a top-notch operation CONS - There were two large roaches in my bathroom. However, when I brought it to the attention of the staff they sprayed and they were gone - No wifi in the rooms (but in the lobby and restaurant) - Doors to bathroom, deck should not lock behind you (trapped on my deck one morning taking a photo of the sunrise) Loved it here.
My husband and I stayed for 2 nights. The property is immaculate with gorgeous flowers and plants all over the place. I love flowers and spent a large amount of time simply exploring the beautiful grounds and taking photos of the tropical flowers. There were tons of butterflies around and I got some breathing photos. Every morning we went on a jungle hike where we saw a number of birds including toucans and other jungle animals. Walking through the jungle was beautiful and something I highly recommend everyone do at least once while staying at this resort (we did the gazebo hike). It was amazing to me that this hike was just a few yards away from our hotel room. The property also has free bikes available for use to explore around the property as well as canoeing/kayaking on the river. We never used the beautiful pool, but there is always a next time! Given the location, we ate all of our meals on property (we didn't have a car and the place is rather secluded) and the food was very delicious. Although to be fair, it was somewhat expensive - especially compared to the rest of Belize. Room: 5 stars. We stayed in a River View room. Loved the outdoor bathroom and the view from our balcony was gorgeous. I loved the fact I could hear the animals of the jungle from our bed and did enjoy the a/c as it was very humid when were there. Would easily stay in this room again - it was romantic and a great setting for our anniversary celebration Food: We ate all our meals (except for lunch) on property and the food was very delicious and we enjoyed it immensely. However, I will admit the food is expensive, especially by Belize standards. Staff: Most of the staff were very friendly and provided us with tips for birding and ideas on how to make the most of our time on the property. Pros: Beautiful location, immaculate grounds, good food Cons: Expensive - you could find a better jungle lodge for adventuring, there was a mixup with our prepaid transportation when leaving the resort which caused us having to leave the resort much earlier than planned to get to our next stop. I would have preferred to spend my extra time enjoying the grounds of the resort rather than waiting for hours at a much less beautiful location. All in all, I highly recommend this resort if you want to spend a few days relaxing in a beautiful jungle paradise - it was a great way to start our 10th wedding anniversary trip.
The location of the Sleeping Giant is amazing. The view we had from our room was just out of this world. The layout of the room and the plunge pool on our own patio was perfect. It was a luxurious experience. However, It was many steps to climb up to the room. So glad we got our luggage delivered and did not have to carry it ourselves. The restaurant was so, so, and the servers were not too attentive, but the meals were good. The bartender did not recognize us, even though he made such a great "to-do" about customer service during our check in - disappointing. We already, and very willingly, gave tips to the "porter" and the housekeeping staff. I was put off when we checked out and received a survey form about all the different types of staff working at the hotel grounds (including landscapers and reception staff) with suggestions how to divide up the tip that we will leave during check out for the different positions. It went without saying that I left without leaving the tip that I had planned to leave.
I traveled here with my girlfriend to celebrate my birthday and got a Groupon and didn't know what to expect. This place was amazing. The staff all knew my name and wished me happy birthday without me saying anything and made us feel very at home. Gareth was the restaurant manager and was one of the best servers I've encountered. They set up a private room for my birthday dinner covered with fresh cut flowers and brought me a cake. The room itself was great. Bathroom with a glass wall showing the rainforest and an outdoor tub. We did some excursions that the hotel set up. While they were a little bit more expensive, it was more convenient. We did the ATM cave and I initially tried to set it up through multiple private tours and none of them would cater to me. The hotels trip was wonderful and easy. Highly recommended!
We love our time at Sleeping Giant Lodge. We are traveling with three kids ages 12, 10, and 8. The staff is extremely helpful and polite. The rooms are clean, air conditioned, and very comfortable. The casitas are the perfect size for a family. I would highly recommend this lodge for anyone planning a trip to Belize!
Truly a pleasant surprise! Beautiful, serine, peaceful. FABULOUS views, outstanding, attentive staff. So much to do in clise proximity--cave tubing, temples, jungle waterfalls. . . I did not want to leave!!!
The Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge was the most beautiful and relaxing place we have ever ventured to. It is off the beaten path and the perfect place to unplug and recharge. Our cottage was beautiful, private, and quiet. The hammock on the back patio was perfect for an afternoon snooze next to the small creek which ran behind our cottage. The bed was very comfortable and (most importantly) the room was kept cool by the AC (a prerequisite for me in the humid Belize heat). We booked excursions directly through the hotel and all of them were fantastic. The excursions we took were ATM (amazing, our favorite excursion), Xunantunich/Cahal Pech (breathtakingly beautiful), and Cave Tubing (super fun) + Belize Zoo. The hotel was able to add on to our cave tubing tour (usually you only go cave tubing) so that we stopped at the Belize Zoo as well, which was a must see if you love big cats. The service at the hotel was beyond excellent, staff was friendly and courteous, and the food was great too (breakfast was our favorite meal of the day... make sure you try the Belize Breakfast!) The pool was lovely (we lounged by the pool regularly after returning from our excursions)... it was the perfect way to cool off after a long day in the Belize heat. Pros: read above... we will definitely go back to the Sleeping Giant Lodge if we return to Belize. It was such a lovely and beautiful place. Warnings: transportation is expensive in Belize and the excursions and car rides are priced accordingly. Be prepared to spend the bulk of your money on excursions and food. We were charged very fair prices for all excursions and transport from the hotel, but just be warned that since we landed early (too early to take the $30/person shuttle from the hotel) we booked a taxi to sleeping giant which cost $150. We could have waited a few hours for the shuttle but Belize Airport isn't the nicest place to spend 4 hours waiting for a ride. Cons: to me, the fact that the hotel is in a remote location is AWESOME! I don't like being hassled to buy things and I don't like tourist traps or large crowds. But for some, the remote location could feel limiting. If you want to be in the middle of the action, the Sleeping Giant is not for you. Also, note that the hotel is in the middle of the Rainforest. Expect some insects in your room. It is IMPOSSIBLE to keep bugs out of your room, which you should expect given the location. We were ok with it. It was a small price to pay for the beautiful views and relaxing atmosphere.
We stayed in a Mountain View Suite and were very impressed. We found this resort on Groupon, and were so glad we purchased the deal. It was a bit of a hike up to the room, but the view and amenities were well worth it. We had a great view of the mountain, a private plunge pool, and a jacuzzi on our deck. The staff were super friendly. The restaurant was good. The grounds were beautiful. It is in the rain forest, so bring bug spray! We did the gazebo hike one day, which had a beautiful view. Very quiet and off the grid. Would definitely recommend!
We had 3 nights in a Mountain View Suite which was quite a lot more expensive than a standard room but worth it - the view was fantastic - a great place to relax in the outside plunge pool. Food was OK but nothing special. Lovely pool area.
My wife and I stayed at Sleeping Giant for 4 days. The hotel location is amazing, it's 1.5 hour shuttle ride from the airport, in the heart of the jungle. The stars are amazing every night, the pool is very nice, it's not huge but there isn't normally a lot of people there. The hike to the gazebo is also definitely worth it. The food at the restaurant was some of the best in Belize, although the dinner portions are very small. Also, the food and drinks do take awhile to be served. I think the bar could benefit from a scaled down drink menu. I sat at the bar a couple nights, and the bartender who was incredibly friendly was having to do 5 to 6 steps for one drink. Which is far too much for a mojito. Overall amazing food though. The bikes on the property don't really work, most had flat tires or busted seats and brakes. Also, the paddle boards did not have fins, so they are hard to steer. A couple things to note about the service here, things are not always available. A massage we requested was not available, because " It's Sunday and people don't work in Belize on Sundays." We asked for 7am return shuttle, which is listed on the website, but had to wait until 8:30 because not enough people wanted the 7am shuttle. The noon shuttle departure from the airport was pushed back 2 hours to wait for additional people. There are a lot of little inconveniences like this, where if you think about the money your spending it can upset you, but for me overall staying in a safe resort in the Jungle with amazing views and food made it all worth it!
