Shangri La Hotel Beihai4.5 out of 5.0

Lovely hotel. But not at 5* level. The hotel maintenance need to be addressed. Upon checking in, the exhaust fan in the bathroom was not working. I reported it. 2 days later when I left, it still was not fixed. Further, the door stop in the bathroom was badly broken. Many pieces of furniture had paint chips that should have been fixed. Just not the standard of a 5* level quality. The buffet however, is one of the best in Beihai. Excellent selection. Very friendly staff. The hotel is not being kept up to 5* level.
Definitely not up to SLA standards, but OK. Breakfast is the same every day, and not very good. The only reason I put 3 stars is because the Gym is very nice and sauna actually worked. If you don't like gym and sauna, then consider the hotel 2 stars. Room and bed are ok, but Chinese smoke in halls and of course are loud (this is expected though). Not much to do in Beihai, doubt we will return. We thought this place was going to be clean air, but it is very polluted.
The hotel was within easy walking distance from the old town and seafood island. Plenty of food choices at the hotel. The hotel has a nice location with a nice view of the ocean. The stafff was great and room was clean and comfortable.
My mother and I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. It was our first time in Beihai so we chose Shangri-La for its name. And we were very happy with our choice. As it is the only 5 stars hotel in Beihai, Shangri-La provides great service. Just after we got off the taxi, the door man came quickly to pick up our suitcases and carried them to the reception. The receptionist was polite and checked us in very quick. During our stay, we found every member of staff was very friendly. They always smiled and tried to help. As we were not familiar with the surroundings, we had meals in the hotel almost every day. We had buffet breakfast in the morning. It is from 6 to 10. It is good time for people who want to lie in. And there was plenty to eat. I really like their home made yoghurt. It was thick, creamy and brilliant! I would suggest you get up early otherwise you might not be able to see it. We also had buffet seafood dinner one night. It was ok. Seafood was fresh but stir fry was a bit disappointing. I didn’t have any. If you want cooked king prawns you need to pick up the number from your table and ask a member of staff to cook them for you. We didn’t know it and nobody told us so we missed that. What a pity. But I got a voucher worth 30RMB for cafe from the supervisor Miss Yang who was really sweet. One evening, we had dinner in the restaurant on first floor. 3 dishes for RMB138 including rice and homemade tea, which was really good value for money! All 3 dishes we had were freshly and well cooked. We wished we would have dinner there every day. I would strongly recommend it! The hotel room we stayed is on 10th floor. It was very clean and had fantastic sea view. The room provides 6 pieces toiletries in the bathroom and 2 free bottle of water every day. The security box in the waredrob is free of charge. And we had the softest pillows ever! The only think we didn’t like is the toilet seat. It was old and yellow. Maybe the hotel should think about change all of them. As a hotel guest, you are free to use their gym, sauna, steam room and swimming pool. I love their steam room. It was hot and empty! All in all, we had a very nice stay in Shangri-La. I would recommend it to all my friends and families if they visit Beihai.
After reading some of the other reviews on this site I was a little apprehensive about the trip. When we arrived I was shocked. This is a great hotel. The lobby area is beautiful and staff there welcoming and helpful. Our room overlooked the sea (what a view!) and was spacious. Yes, if you looked closely at the furniture there were some slight signs of wear, however this was not glaring and the overall feeling of the room was excellent. We spent a lot of time in the hotel during our stay. The swimming pool is first class, with a great slide for under 12s, and a rock wall climbing area. A lot of pool toys for rent if you forget to pack! The pool bar is a massive highlight of the hotel. Every evening we enjoyed the sunset over the ocean while enjoying bbq and drinks - does it get better than that?! The club room is small, but oddly under-used. It is a beautful, comfortable room - a great place to relax if you need a moment! The food there in the evening is really, really good (if you are staying on the club floor you probably don't need to go out for dinner!!) and service excellent. The English levels in the hotel are not as high as you would find in say, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Beijing, but why would you expect them to be? The English levels are good enough and if you worry about that I would suggest booking a club-floor room, where the staff all have a pretty good English level. Overall, this is a wonderful stay, I would recommend it to anyone and we will be back!
Visit a friend there and have a afternoon tea there. good service and looks hotel business is very slow. the facilities looks old and need to refresh. Location is good and a not very clean beach at the back of the hotel... but you can feel this is the traditional Shangri-La hotel...
We have booked a suite during the spring festival as it was the only reasonable deal during that season. But it was not really up to that standard. The room facilities are outdated. Air conditioner is not working properly. Sofa has got a stain. Shower head was a mess. Breakfast was a battle. I would definitely agree with many that this is the worst shangri-la. But of course, it is still a shangri-la and definitely has the charm of a five star hotel... In a city with no other good choices, it is still the place to go for...... btw, I got on to Facebook with the hotel wifi, is it a big bonus?
I know Beihai very well indeed. I can just say that although there are brand new 5 stars hotel that recently opened up, Shangri-La, while not extremely new anymore, is absolutely the very best in town. Spacious, organised, clean and its personnel speaks english which isn't quite easy to find in any other place in Beihai. Breakfast is great: from chinese style to european with every morning fresh delicious bread, pastries, jam from France and so on and on. Definitely a place worthy to stay. Price all taxes and breakfast included around 118 USD / night.
Service was excellent. Only few employees spoke moderate English. But employees were all very friendly. Breakfast and buffet dinner was miscellaneous.Lunch menu was diverse. Room was tidy. Bathtub did not run well. There was hole in ceramic tile wall just next to the shower. Bed was really comfortable. Pool area was nice.
