Room 223. When we arrived we were given envelopes, but without room keys, so not a good start. The bathroom had old tiles and dirty grout, with tarnished and old fittings. It was too hot to sleep, due to lack of air con. Breakfast was just a typical hotel buffet, which could have been anywhere in the world. We were treated as second class guests as we were part of a tour group, made to sit at group tables for meals, and no mini bar in our rooms. We booked in advance a lift into town on the Hotel shuttle, and waited and waited some more, then they told us that they had forgotten to look in the book. A sea view is no substitute for poor service.
Very good hotel very well run apart from ensuring pool rules are adhered to. Having kids and an adult climbing the rocks and jumping and diving in did not help us have a relaxing enjoyable pool experience.
We booked 2 twin rooms. Upon check in we're told they only had double rooms. Big issue with this as we were travelling with a friend and his Mother. Result? They had to share a very small double bed. The room we had (212) was very tired and dated. No aircon, chipped paintwork on the walls and the doors. Really grotty. Copthorne, you really need to update this place. It's dreadful!
Really lovely hotel sitting next door to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds - really handy for when you want to visit the Museum and Treaty Grounds (recommended). Great service from the hotel - a shuttle bus ferries clients to/fro the waterfront at Paihai where you'll need to be for all your trips out and around the bay. Hotel grounds - beautiful, lawns wrap around the hotel and there's a lovely small stretch of beach. Hotel has its own lovely pool too. Our double room on the ground floor was lovely - everyone has its own small outdoor terrace and we were facing East - enjoyed beautiful sunrises. No air-con in the room - a ceiling fan and a standing fan had also been provided for us. Small kitchenette area and bathroom - both OK, perfectly good for what we wanted/needed. Safe deposit box - which is always welcomed by us. Bar/restaurant; we attempted to sit outside for an evening meal but once the sunset we came under attack from bugs so retreated to the cooler bar area inside. Food - we had roast lamb - was excellent, really lovely. A very nice hotel for Paihai.... you can walk it into 'town' along the waterfront - quite a nice walk - about 30min slow stroll...very pleasant.
At best a 3 star motel not a resort. Rooms not air conditioned. Very expensive, when we were there, not good value at all. The location is lovely if you have a view of the bay. Gardens lovely. Foyer area presents well but the rest of the property looks tired and in need of a refurbishment.
This is an older hotel but they have obviously spent a lot on renovation. I think just about every room faces the water. We had the cheapest room but still had a great view. The room had a little sun porch and opened up onto a deck. Great outdoor chairs, large TV and a fan. Very clean. Very friendly helpful people at reception as well. There was a huge well appointed bar area and restaurant. Would definitely recommend and will always be the place we stay at in Paihia.
We stayed here as part of our tour group recently, and had two nights here. Our room was nice and had a balcony. Usual amenities were available. Took advantage of the guest laundry whilst here as well. The first night we had a buffet dinner which was ok. The breakfast here though are good with a good selection of everything. It was a shame because it rained whilst we were here so couldn't make use of the outside area really. They do a snack menu at the bar which is ok. One thing to say is that there is no air conditioning in the rooms, something you will find in a lot of NZ hotels.
We had a wonderful 3 nights at this stunningly located hotel. We were fortunate in that we had what was probably the best room in the hotel with a large private veranda from which there was a superb view of the sea and we could walk down to a small private beach. The room was large and well appointed. It could have done with air conditioning but there was a ceiling fan which sufficed. As we arrived quite late we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant (something we don't usually do). Unfortunately we had to wait for an hour for our food to arrive but the waiting staff apologised in advance and offered us free drinks. The pool area is nice but there aren't enough loungers and sun umbrellas. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here but I suspect had we not been given such a lovely room then I would have awarded a lower rating.
Coming to the Bay of Islands was part of a short three day road trip we took from Auckland, before a cruise. We found the Copthorne Hotel to be a great place to stay. Nice room, lovely view and helpful staff.
Stayed here as part of s tour group. Looks great in photos, reality quite different. First of all, rooms have no air conditioning. Our room was on first floor so could not even open unscreened doors to get air. Made for a miserable night. Ate dinner at their buffet- low quality unappetizing food. But the worst part is their shuttle into town. It stops running at 5:30pm in an attempt to hold you hostage for dinner. And that is what I felt like the whole time. Stay anywhere but this hotel. You will be much happier.
