The hotel staff were welcoming and organized and check in was no problem. We loved our room when we first walked in. The lodge feel was perfect and we were definitely pleasantly surprised. Like others have said, once the sun went down and the blind was pulled the room, with all available lights on, was just too dark. A simple extra lamp in the corner of the room would make a big difference. In terms of the distance to town, we too were here when it was -30. We simply took the bus into and from town. It was 2.00, quick and easy. Overall a great stay, albeit, dark stay.
We enjoyed this lovely lodge very much. It is conveniently located on the edge of Banff, with easy access to the highway heading toward the ski areas. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Loved the heated underground parking. The hotel is well appointed, and overall a great spot for travelers who care about value, but are also a bit particular on how a place looks and feels. Our only wishes were, that the lighting in the roos themselves was better. With only one overhead, and some very weak desk/table lamps, it was tough getting organized. Lastly, a bar would be very nice to have on site.
We appreciated the value this hotel offers, with free underground parking, breakfast, and currently a reasonable room rate. The decor throughout is modern, friendly and unique. Unfortunately, we didn't care for the location of the room, being on the ground floor, near an elevator and the lobby, and above the parkade entrance - a bit of noise comes with this location. The room was spacious, but lacking in lighting. When you close the blinds for privacy (people walking on the street can look right in at you), there just aren't enough lights and it's dark. The carpet under the big table had a trip edge, and our bed was short-sheeted - the sheet stopped short of the foot of the bed. The breakfast area was bright and unique, offering just basic/average food, but a noisy environment, with metal chairs scraping on laminate floors. Front desk staff were friendly.
I booked this hotel in December for a stay in February. After looking at all of the travel sites, we ended up booking directly with the hotel for $169/night taxes in for a double queen. The room was for 2 adults and 1 child. We were also travelling with (separate rooms) 4 more adults and 1 more child. Upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised to see that a relative had called ahead, upgraded our room and paid for he weekend! Therefore this review will be for a loft room. Location Don’t be fooled by google and Expedia. I’m not sure if the location has been updated but I had checked several times prior to booking and it showed this hotel in the middle of downtown. Not the case. This is one of the first hotels as you enter Banff (right hand side). There is no hotel shuttle into town which is fine in mild weather but we were in a polar vortex during our stay so the 20 minute walk was not happening. Check in Front desk staff were pleasant. After giving the credit card for incidentals we got our keys, wifi password and parking code. Parking Free with your stay. Underground. Loft Room Loft: 2 queen beds, 2 large bean bag beds. Full bathroom. Connecting door to adjacent room. 2 lounge chairs w small table. TV. Dresser. Lots of open floor space. (No closet). Main floor: 1 pull out couch, Gas fireplace, table for 6, powder room on the main floor, dishwasher, sink, stove top, glasses, utensils, dinnerware, corkscrew/bottle opener, etc. Note: the only closet space was in the front entry. This room was lovely and perfect for entertaining our group of 8 ppl for before dinner drinks. Fitness room Best I have seen at a hotel without a spa. Treadmills, bike, elliptical, medicine balls, free weights, etc. Pool/Hot Tub This building does not have its own pool or hot tub at this time. However they have purchased the property next door and allow you use of the facilities. At this time the facilities are accessible via a basement tunnel. They have not been updated but are clean. The pool is outdoor and is not a hot pool. The hot tub is inside. They do have plans to add a few hot tubs and a sauna to their courtyard space. I am assuming that this will take place in summer 2018. Free Breakfast I would say the quality of the breakfast is better than most Free breakfasts but definitely not as good as dining out or homemade. Selection: regular coffee, apple & orange juice, water, toast, bagels, hard boiled eggs, pre-made omelette, pancakes, bacon, cereal, oatmeal, and muffins. Cafe For purchase items: pre-made food items. Specialty coffees and tea. Communal lounge area Comfortable, nice space. Board games available. Even though the distance from town was not what I expected. I would stay here again. It’s pretty, clean, friendly and comfortable. I think with the neighbouring property and the courtyard, this will be a lovely updated affordable choice in Banff.
We visited Canalta Lodge last weekend to spend the next day at a nearby ski resort. We both agreed for the price paid that it is an exceptional value for a harder-to-find and nice modernized hotel in Banff. Check-in was prompt and front desk was professional, though nothing remarkably above and beyond. Locks provided for ski equipment for added security. The room was well appointed, albeit a touch on the dark side. Very nice chic and flair with the beds, unique alarm clock, lanterns, wallpaper decor and so forth. Even the do not disturb room placard was thoughtful. The bed was new, comfortable and for const conscious travels, the room has a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker; we will make good use of them the next time we visit! The nice touches are apparent, as they have an assortment of board games for visitors to use. Breakfast was pretty good for a complimentary offering, with (precooked style) eggs and bacon, breads, muffins, cereals, juices, coffees, yogurt, pancakes and so forth. The only issue we came across was the hot tub and pool were actually part of an adjacent property, the Voyager Inn, thus were outdated (walking through reminded me of the Shining). However, this is not a knock against Canalta, as it did appear they have plans on upgrading their courtyard in the near future to provide the amenities. In short, at the price point paid for a Friday accommodation, we felt there was good value, thoughtful appointments and we had a great experience overall at the modernized Canalta Lodge in Banff (formerly Spruce Grove Inn). We recommend it and have no hesitations returning. Please kindly indicate if you found this review to be helpful at all, as this will help me with my future review efforts!
Check in was a breeze - quick, easy, friendly. The location is nice, in town and easy to get everywhere by whichever mode of transportation you choose - drive, walk, bus, bike. The room was clean and nice looking - newly renovated - but poor lighting, stiff bed, the bathroom door was broken, and the toilet handle is tough and have to push it hard. The parkade is a crazy mishmash, very disorganized and people parked weird and blocking spots, and a truck topper sitting in one of the stalls. Overall, not bad for the low price we paid.
Booked this hotel through Expedia for New Year’s Day but ended up having to cancel to due an illness. Hotel had no problem moving our reservation to accommodate us 12 days later than the original booking. We ended up booking an extra night and stayed from January 12-14. I had phoned from the road to see if the hotel could accommodate us for an early check in. They also gave us a room on the third floor with mountain views. Check in was a breeze and easy to navigate through the hotel. Room was clean, had high ceilings and the heat worked amazingly! They offered complimentary k-cups for the Coffee machine in the room, which was a nice touch! Gym facilities were small but practical and worked for us for the few nights we were there. The only down side was the pool which is shared with the hotel next door. The pool is outside and it was not heated enough to swim at night. The hot tub was indoors but small and the tiles were very very slippery even with grippy sandals on. However, the pool/hot tub facilities did not make or break our trip. We for sure would stay here again! Staff were lovely and so friendly! Thank Canalta!
Very nice, clean hotel, with a just renovated feel. Beds and pillows were very comfortable. The staff at the front desk were very polite and helpful, arranging for a taxis service giving directions and information. Great underground garage to park our SUV and well lit. Free morning breakfast, and with the large volume of people going through it was kept well stocked, and lots of variety. Enjoyable stay.
Our family of 5 (3 teenagers) have just left a great week in Banff. Our stay in Canalta Lodge was perfect. The hotel has been completely renovated and is modern and clean. We stayed in 2 different rooms over the course of our week (it is a busy time in Banff and they were unable to give us a room to fit our family for the first 2 days). Moving rooms was seamless-They moved everything for us while we were out hiking. The first room was 2 queens plus a sofa bed. There was a lovely fireplace in front of the sofa bed. There was also a small bar fridge and a Keurig coffee maker. The second room was quite generous in size and could have easily slept 9 people. There were 2 queens, a bunk bed that was a queen with a twin on top and a queen sized sofa bed. For our family, everyone had their own bed. We had a kitchen with a microwave, a larger fridge, a dishwasher, a 2 burner cooktop and a dining table that sat 6 plus a counter for 2 more people. There were also dishes, silverware, pot and pans and utensils. All of these things made it very easy for us to eat dinner in our room and take our lunch with us to the ski hill. This hotel is perfect for families. If we had stayed during a warmer time (it was at least -25C our whole visit), we could have walked into town in approximately 10-15 minutes. It was a short 5 minute drive to the grocery store. The hotel also includes a free breakfast which was the usual free hotel breakfast (eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, cereal, fruit). Everyone in our family was able to find something they liked for breakfast. Every staff member we encountered was welcoming, polite and helpful. I would definitely stay at Canalta Lodge again and will certainly recommend it to my friends for their visits to Banff.
I stayed at the Spruce Grove Inn in November 2017, absolutely beautiful. We had the loft type room. Our room was so clean, such nice looking furniture, a clean bathroom- very spacious.Highly reccomend
