If you are an independent traveller and you want to get around in Borneo, you can! There is an agency in Balikpapan which can plan whatever trip or tour you want. Its name is Rimba Borneo (on internet there is the web site) and the chairman of all the professional guides is Rusdy Ansyah. He is a very good guide, he can speak english very well and you can discover the real soul of Kalimantan.

Aston Balikpapan hotell has some good spots for looking at the sea and the swimming pool is quite nice. Breakfast was a rather intense experience with children and a clown [!] - I do not mind this at all and appreciated the whole thing. I was there on a weekend and there seemed to be some function at the hotel. The rooms are good and spacious and also have a small kitchen. Wifi worked without problems. The pictures of the room on some booking sites was not really reflecting the actual room I got. My rating is a strong three.

Aston Balikpapan Hotel & Residence is a hotel-apartment accommodation, and it has more of an apartment atmosphere than a hotel... I stayed at the best room the hotel has the offer, which is the Royal Suite (609). From there I noticed that the hotel has a few homework especially in the refurbishment and renovation department. There were some issues in my room: - The AC is not functioning in its main bedroom. I wanted to complain, but since I only stayed for one night and the room has three bedrooms, I withdrew my intention. I didn't know why the AC didn't work-it could be either the AC itself or wrong settings in the remote. - MOST IMPORTANT: Some of the furniture/facilities in the room needs refurbishment. There are chips in the door, stains in the floor, cigarette burnt holes in the curtains, the toilet seat is dirty. For such a brand like Aston and especially for one of its best rooms, I think the management should take this issue seriously. Other issues relate to the public area: - Swimming pool: I think the pool is great. But I noticed that it is open for public as well (correct me if I am wrong). I think the pool should be exclusive for hotel guests only. It's really noisy and there's no privacy, especially on weekends. Many outside guests comes in, making it very crowded. - Path to the lobby: I checked out early as I had an early flight at 06:30. Guests must be careful when walking out to the lobby. There are steps and stairs on the way and the lights are very minimum-a bit dangerous actually, especially when it's raining which can be a bit wet and slippery. - There was an issue with the elevator. It skipped my floor for a couple of times and I had to wait for around 10 minutes and finally had to use the luggage elevator. However, there are some nice things I can say about this hotel: - Hotel staffs were very friendly and helpful. The were quick in the reservation and helped to get a taxi. - Hotel is strategically located in the city center. You can use taxi, public transport or online transport to go to malls and the airport. - There's a policy from the hotel in regard of the balcony window. You have to ask permission from the management to open the window-to avoid unnecessary incidents. I didn't taste the breakfast as my flight was too early.

I was really disappointed by the service in this hotel, the first night they had a live music show all night till 11:00 pm and I couldn't shut my eyes after a 27 hour flight from Canada. I asked them to change my room and they did give me another room on the same side of the building (the loud live show side) which was only a bit more quiet. The lock boxes in both rooms didn't work and although I asked about them, it didn't get fixed properly. The staff spoke really poor English. I was trying to order a tea and they guy did not understand what I want. After 5 minutes of trying to ask for a tea, the guy just hung up. It might be different experience if you speak Indonesian but I don't recommend this hotel for expats.

plus sides: spacious room, great view, friendly staff not so great: am really frustrated with the fact that our balcony door is locked and won't be unlocked.. we have this balcony with a view on the ocean and it would be amazing if we could open it for some fresh air or to step outside to enjoy the breeze. A sign on the door says that the door is locked for security reasons but can be unlocked upon request at the reception desk and by signing a waiver. We did make the request at the reception desk and were told it was no longer possible.. very disappointing. And, if you change your policy, change your stickers accordingly.. (Mr Kartika, we are still staying here and if you could unlock the door for us we'd find it very forthcoming room nr 1507) apart from that, I read from other reviews a couple of weeks back that the second lift was not working.. well, it still isn't. Waiting times for the one remaining lift are quite long (15th floor, so not taking the stairs) also the gym facilities are in need of a touch-up especially the showers - did not want to shower there

This hotel offers spacious room, i stay at deluxe room and looks like its a studio type apartment. Comfortable, sea view swimming pool, easy access and closed to city centre. Breakfast need more food variety. Overall: Its nice and quite recommended

Not the first time staying in Aston but yes first time in Balikpapan for me. I stayed only for one night at deluxe or suite room with good facilities like kitchen, stove, fridge, balcony, iron shelf, laundry, king size bed, shower and sofa. One thing that really annoying is the sound of bird chirp that never ever stops. It sounds all the time since you open your room door until you leave it. There is nothing you can do with it and you have to live with it. It was on 15th floot anyway. The good things only their swimming pool faces directly to the sea so it something that you can't find anywhere. In conclusion if there is no bird chirp all the night I would give higher rating.

Good location, close (less than 10 minutes brisk walk) to major shopping center / mall and around commerce area. The sea view is a good one and the hotel takes good advantage such as designing swimming pool and terraces facing the sea (indeed one of best spot in the hotel but the pool becomes a bit too open). The room is equipped with pantry, like typical Aston design. Clean and comfort, but maintenance need to be improved (scratched tiles, defects on couch). Good WIFI connection in the room. Staffs are quite friendly. The front office displays flight information on that date - rarely provided by other hotels.

The service is really bad and terrible even i booked for the royal suites room for 2 nights, such as : 1. Coordination between staff is not good. 2. The staff aren't friendly. 3. Lift for crew was broken,but no maintenance for it,so all crew use the guest lift,and they recommend us to use emergency exit (stairs) from room (7th floor and more) to go to the lobby with all luggages carry by ourself. 4. The tap water in bathroom is salty (not good for skin).

Stayed here for almost 1 month.. rented 2 rooms apartment.. and it seems they provide a very good service.. but small notes fpr the hoisekeeping service.. it takes ages when we have some problem likes self-locked room or asking to tidy up the room.. but overall it's worth the price..
