This was a two-night stay for a friend and me, and it was very pleasant. My main complaint would be that there was no wifi in the rooms. The place itself was very nice, and the price is on par with the other older sites in Kuta. I would stay here again.
The location of this hotel is great! The rooms were very outdated and the beds super uncomfortable. The breakfast was very good but isn't complimentary. The dinner was just ok. The pool is very clean but the drinks are expensive. They give you a free picture on the beach and a free banana boat ride. They don't tell you that when you take the banana boat ride, the location is about 35 min away and you have to wait until the rest of the people are ready to go. They want you to buy the other activities they have there which are relatively cheap but you do spend at least half a day there.
I stayed at this hotel years ago and I generally like the way it is laid out, but given the rapid changes taking place in the Tubah-Kuta-Legian-Seminyak area of Bali you can find much more modern and luxurious for not that much more money. Since I have been coming to Indonesia since 1975 and often stayed at rather simple places (as in, for example, Kendari) I still regard this as a kind of luxury, but I am sixty six years old and did not enjoy the loud bands at the restaurant at night. (You cannot hear the band from most of the rooms. Ask for a quiet room if that is what you want.) The swimming pool is great. It is hot in the middle of the day but if you want to meet other tourists you can go to happy hour. They give you a free beer. You can also really swim, which is often not the case in pools at five star hotels in North America and Europe. The staff really try hard, but it helps if you speak a little bit of Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) since only those at the front desk really (sometimes) speak English reasonably well. I thought my wallet might have been stolen and the staff helped me in a very genuine way. (It turned out I had simply buried my wallet too deeply in my suitcase, precisely to avoid being robbed. Most of my money was in the safe with my passport.) The fact that the Bali Beach Walk Mall is right next door is a boon to first time visitors. Kuta has gotten a bit grubby and the Bali Beach Walk Mall is hyper modern. You can get all kinds of luxury items, but you can also get relatively cheap meals. I bought a card for $10 at EAT EAT and used it for two meals. The Bali Film Festival will be held at the Bali Beach Walk Mall in early October, if you are thinking of going soon. Of course, if you want to catch a little glimpse of Balinese culture (dance, art, religious ceremonies) you will need to get out of the Kuta area pronto. But when first arriving at the airport Grand Istana Rama Hotel is good enough for anyone who is not a Postmodern snob. The internet connection was good; the tv was excellent, with many channels. Many people will enjoy this hotel for a few nights at the beginning or the end of their stay. But I myself no longer enjoy the Kuta area very much. One might as well go to Honolulu or Miami. This hotel has much to recommend it. Sit on your balcony (lanai in Hawai'ian) and enjoy the early morning tranquility, unless of course the people next door are just coming back from partying all night at the Seminyak nightclub scene!
This hotel is across from the beach and may be less costly than others in that area because it is older. However, it has big rooms and nice gardens on the grounds and pool is very nice.
