During the planning stage of our trip, we wanted to stay at a Parador. Due to some unexpected changes in our itinerary, once we arrived in Spain, we had the chance to add Jaen and to stay at the Parador de Jaen. We splurged a little to get a room with a terrace and view of the mountains in the area. Definitely worth the extra money. Listening to the wind howl in the night added to the authenticity of the experience. The hotel is built on a hill 800 meters above Jaen, next to the Santa Catalina Castle. While the building itself is more recent, it was built to match the rest of the archaeological site. The fortress is dated as far back as the 8th century and has undergone changes over the conquering centuries, but it is an amazing place to explore. Be sure to walk all the way out to La Cruz - the views are spectacular. While we were there is was windy and raining and cold, but rainbows kept appearing, and it was worth the effort. The Parador de Jaen also has a fabulous restaurant. The breakfast buffet was well stocked with hot and cold selections and cooked to order eggs. Dinner was a treat. Several traditional offerings from the local area. Everything was well prepared and flavored. We were very happy to have the chance to see this part of Andalusia - an unexpected add-in.

Though a rental car is needed. All attractions are far away from the hotel. However the castle tour is steps away and very nicely laid out.
