Despite its old age, this hotel is very well kept and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. We got a warm welcome and liked the ambiance very much. The room was comfortable and overlooking some magnificent views of Luso and the area. Breakfast was very good as well.

If you're looking for luxury, you won't find it here. This is an old hotel with its own unique character and history. The beds are hard and the hotel could do with some upgrading, towels in the bathroom were paper thin, but otherwise it's reasonably comfortable. I found the person at reception somewhat abrupt when we checked in, but the staff in the dining room were very pleasant and accommodating. The breakfast was simple, not great. The grounds are lovely with a nice quiet pool area to relax in and some parking in the back which made access to the rooms a little easier and there is no elevator. The village is charming with the São João Fountain in the village square where anyone can fill up their bottles with thermal spring water.

This one is a charming hotel in a beautiful victorian house. I fell in love with it as soon as I arrived. The room was nice and confortable but not specialyl luxury. The bath was simple with a shower plate (no bathtub sadly...) It have a small parking and a small poll enough for 5 to 6 persons I think. ADVICE! It´s an old house so there IS NOT elevetor! you wil find some stair in your way to your room. Luso (the village) is also charming, with a small lake, victorian houses and some good places to eat something.

Alegre is an old charming hotel, managed by the família that owns the hotel. We were very well welcome, and everyone's were very nice. The breakfast is nice but not great, but in general my family like it. The room was big, but without air conditioner. The swimming pool is nice . Overall was a good two day stay . The only problem we had, was with the wifi. Didn't work during our stay.

We highly recommend this hotel. We had a wonderful stay in this comfortable, clean, lofty old home. The building is full of character and speaks to the long history of Luso. The staff and owners were happy, friendly and offered amazing advice on what to do in the area. They have a great understanding of the regional and national history too, and we had great conversations. Luso is a quiet mountainside town and the hotel has lovely views. Important natural springs run through the town and there are nice restaurants. Luso is also a great home base for day trips (by car...) in all directions. We could have planned more time simply relaxing in Luso at Alegre Hotel - by the pool and in the reading room. We'll go back.

Our second time to Alegre Hotel gave us an opportunity to revisit the charm of a wonderful small town in the interior of Portugal and manor house full of "Old Portugal." We were not disappointed, nor were the guests who accompanied us on this current trip. The furniture, setting, and manners are classic Portuguese, so don't expect granite showers, big screen televisions, and herbal organic bath gels. Go elsewhere for that. But if you like the character, grace, and dignity that only can be provided to the traveler who seeks a different tempo, with more than enough comfort and modern conveniences to satisfy you without indulgence, Hotel Alegre is your place. The sitting room near the check in desk is vintage Portugal charm, and the breakfast in the formal room in the morning is plentiful and attentive. Luso has several good restaurants and take some bottles and fill them up from the delicious cool waters of the ancient spring. Take the short trip up to Buçaco and be amazed at the gardens, convent, giant trees, and echoes and memories of a time long past. Perhaps we won't wait three years again to visit. Enjoy Alegre and this gem of the interior of Portugal!

This hotel is 85 years old and has been renovated but not changed since. Breakfast was so-so, bathroom very tiny and the bed was really too hard. But you get wonderful views, old furniture, high ceilings and very friendly staff. I wouldn't stay here for a week, but it's a fun place for night.

We just returned from 7 days in Luso at the Alegre Hotel. It is the perfect old world charming hotel with a lovely garden and pool. The location is great for walks in the town and up through the beautiful national forest. We totally enjoyed ourselves and will be happy to return there and to recommend it to our friends. The owners were very friendly and helpful with excellent English and ideas for day trips filled with historical information. Wish we were still there on vacation!

Luso is a nice quiet town. Because the reviews on tripadvisor were not too enthousiastic about the rooms in the Palace Hotel in Bussaco, we decided to stay in the Hotel Allegre, which is cheaper and looked good. We were not disappointed. We were greeted courteously by the owner, and the room and bed were stylish (though the bed was a bit hard, but we would soon find out this is the case in most hotels in Portugal). We walked through Bussaco and returned in the evening to Hotel Allegre.

Very comfortable, friendly hotel. The accommodation is as the websites describe. Plenty of history and antiques. Beautiful quality bed linen. Bathroom could do with updating but it was part of the charm. Lovely soft water. Enjoyed our stay and would return when visiting the area again.
