Hotel Arenal Lodge

We had 3 different groups staying in rooms at the hotel. This was one of our favorite hotels on the trip. The chalets are amazing and had beautiful views of the volcano. Some of the rooms, like the "honeymoon suite" have not been updated and where clean, but definitely not as nice. We wanted to do a zipline last minute before we left town and the lady at the tour desk made it happen. The pool area was lovely and the food was good.

I booked a chalet and the view was spectacular. Our neighbors from below were a bit noisy but it didn't ruin the experience. We would probably not return but not due to the hotel just the overall area. I, personally, was not too impressed with the Arenal area compared to the other cities I visited during this trip. The volcano tour we booked was a bit dull and overpriced for what it actually was for.

Amazing views from the chalets we stayed in. Staff was friendly and helpful. Great pool and Jacuzzi. The drive up is awesome.....in a good and bad sense. It's kind of scary and fun at the same time. It takes awhile so we were glad to have pickups for our excursions. There's no butterfly garden as advertised. It's out of town and with the drive it's a benefit to plan ahead.

We arrived at this hotel to find it in constant storm conditions. Other guests said it had been like this for days. The tour agent said it was like that all the time because it is up in the mountains. Of course the weather is not their fault. The beds in the rooms were not comfortable. The hotel is a $35 cab ride in to town. The restaurant at the hotel was terrible, so that meant if we wanted a decent meal we would have to spent $70 just for cab fare. Because of all of this we decided to check out the next morning. The hotel staff said I would get a 50% refund. They did not process the refund, and I have called them several times, provided multiples means to give the refund they should have processed when I checked out, and have also emailed them several times to several different company email addresses. We checked out of the hotel on December 27th. It is now February 16th and I still haven't received a refund. I imagine at this point I will not. I would consider this stealing.

The view from the hotel is incomparable! You can have a very nice breakfast (free) surronded by a breatiful garden while the volcano is right in front of you! There is also a rose garden in the backyard of the hotel. Although it's named as garden, it is really an epitome of larger rain forest! Very nice!!!!! A lot of humming birds! The room is very nice to stay as well! wonderful wonderful experience at decent price!!!!!!!!

The Hotel Arenal Lodge is great place to stay with an awesome view of the volcano when the weather is clear. The lodge property is huge with amazing gardens and lots of walking trails. The property is clean and well kept. The gardens attract many different types of birds and wildlife. Along one of the walking trails is an established fruit and nut plantation with a large variety of fruits and nuts growing. The lodge staff is very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Withing the lodge is a travel and tour desk we found very helpful with many options to choose from.

Hotel motel is not close to anything. Beds and pillows hard and lumpy. Only plus is views

I love the please, nice view of Arenal and the staff are great with tourists!

The location and view were amazing. The room however was not. We got a free upgrade to a room where the windows wouldn't close, the ac didn't work, and the lights in the ceiling fan wouldn't turn off without turning the fan off. The staff were great though. Very friendly and helpful.

Arenal Lodge was a GREAT place to stay! It sits up the mountain and has a perfect view of Arenal Volcano on a clear day. The climate is of course tropical so many days its rainy and the volcano is not always visible but we had 2 great days with perfect views. Even without the volcano view this is a perfect place to stay whether you are a family, a couple or flying solo. This lodge truly captures the costa rican experience. It is surrounded by rain forest, palm trees and a beautiful tropical garden. It has a beautiful pool and two hot tubs which we used regularly. The facilities were in great shape, everything was clean and met my expectations. The staff was friendly and went out of their way to help you, give you recommendations for great local places to eat and provide assistance in finding activities to keep you busy. Most of the staff is bilingual and easily able to communicate in english. The lodge has a restaurant as well, great food, great service and the prices weren't to bad. For a cheaper meal, La Fortuna is only about a 20 min. drive and has tons of options for a authentic costa rican meal. The lodge does offer a free hot breakfast buffet each morning which was very good! There is also a good bit of wildlife you can see behind the lodge, there were a few monkeys, different kinds of birds and some other neat creatures, lizards etc. In the lodge lobby they do have a tour group that can assist you with booking different tours and activities in the area which is helpful for folks that don't have a lot pre-booked. The only two negative things I really can say are as follows: the WIFI is pretty terrible to be very honest. It does work sometimes, but its slow and spotty at best, but hey you are in Costa Rica, put your phone away and enjoy your surroundings. :-) the only other thing that may be helpful to others is, it is a steep climb up the driveway to the lodge and it does sit about 20 minutes out of La Fortuna, the nearest small town. If you are ok with the peace and tranquility of being more secluded on top of a mountain than you will love it, if you would rather be a little closer to the town then stay in a hotel a little closer to La Fortuna. If I went to Costa Rica again, I would not hesitate to stay here a 2nd time!!

I truly appreciate the beautiful ground of the lodge. The view of the vocano is spectacular. The included morning guided rain forest walk is fabulous. I am a little unnerved by the long up hill drive from the gate to the lodge though. We tried to get back to the lodge by night fall every day. For dinner, we always ate at the restaurant and liked the food. The breakfast is good too. Noise is something that we had a slight problem with. The wall is very thin so it is easy to hear sounds. Luckily, people stayed at the lodge were not the party type. However, It got very loud when it rained. You can hear every rain drop falling on the tin roof.

I can only speak about my experience in room 45 and the lobby/restaurant and pool. We were very disappointed in this room. Here are my complaints about our room: the exterior lights didn't all work, the door on the safe was missing (and thus unusable), the AC didn't work initially (but they came and fixed it within 10 min), nothing was plugged in (which seemed odd, as if the room hasn't been used in a long time), one of the lamps didn't work, and some of the windows were broken. Our room was basically two rooms and the door between the two rooms had 2 chain locks on it, which was odd and didn't really make us feel safe. As for the lobby/restaurant: the internet connections/wifi was basically non-existent and the restaurant needed up dating. One of the hot tubs was luke warm. All in all, I believe this hotel likely hit it's prime 10-15 years ago and they haven't done much updating since. On the positive, the view of the volcano was excellent, it's a shame it isn't active anymore. The hotel is far outside of town and so, if you don't have a rental car, you will be reliant on taxis and/or tours, which will cost you. I wouldn't recommend this place if you don't have a rental car. Overall, I rated this rather low because our experience didn't match what was sold to us (via the website).

Ok the good First: The Views are amazing when you get there, and there is a ton animals all around you. We saw many birds, and other animals at the hotel. The staff spoke English very well and were overall pretty helpful. Now the bad: The humidity was pretty high when we were there and it seemed that nothing was dry, the sheets were wet, the towels were wet, and our swim suits for sure never dried. We wanted to turn on the air conditioner, but we were informed (after paying extra to be 'upgraded' that ours was broken) and that in fact most of the air conditioners at the hotel are broken. Apparently they can't get an air conditioner repair man to drive up the steep hill to get there. So about the hill, The road getting to the Hotel is a little crazy, Its a 15 minute drive and the road winds up the hill is very steep at times and is full of pot holes, just pray nobody is coming down when you are going up! Lastly the hotel is very far from town and not convenient if you want to do things outside the hotel because of the extra driving, excursions tend to cost more. The food at the restaurant was not very good either, so that was tough because of the inconvenience of getting to another restaurant. Of the several hotels we stayed at in Costa Rica, this was definitely the low point, but we still had an amazing trip and this was also the cheapest hotel we stayed at.

This hotel has a huge, beautiful property, so if what you want to do at Arenal is watch the volcano (which is no longer active) and bird watch, it's perfectly fine. If you want to partake of the many many fun things to do in the area, I would recommend another hotel closer to La Fortuna and not 2km up a twisted cobblestone driveway. The beds were poor, staff and breakfast, wonderful.

This hotel has beautiful grounds, with plants that look like they are out of the Jurassic era (in a good way), good views of the volcano if your room is facing that way, and rooms with a wall of windows and cute patios. On a clear night, you can see thousands of stars from your rocking chairs. The restaurant is good, the rooms are pretty bare but functional (hair dryer, coffee maker, two sinks), and there is good hot water and water pressure. The staff is pleasant. The downside to the hotel is the very long, steep, poorly paved road that it is required you drive up to actually get to the lodge. There is nothing within walking distance and the road is scary to drive on at night or in bad weather. There is also very little wi-fi service.

It was far away from the town. So need a vehicle and definitely a SUV. I had booked this hotel for the view of Arenal volcano but unfortunately it was very foggy and couldn't a clear view. Otherwise the stay was comfortable. The person at the reception Daniel was very helpful but not the ladies who replaced him for other shifts. It was close to the Tabacon Hot springs.

It was beautiful and the food was great but we went during off season and we had the small staff that wasnt on top of their game.

I travel for a living and have been to several foreign countries. This is a very unique hotel. The views are absolutely incredible, especially in the mornings. When you book, be aware this is no five star resort, but it leaves you with such a great experience. You get the feel like you are in a remote area by yourself. There is lots of wildlife, mainly birds, around the hotel. In fact, one morning, my wife and I fed a wild macaw off of our balcony as we overlooked the volcano. Just a few you should knows: It is about 20-25 mins from La Fortuna, It is about 10 mins up a long and steep drive off of the main road, Not all rooms have a/c, Internet is only available in the lobby, Close to Sky Trek and the national park, Food is good and at a reasonable price. My wife and I were on our honeymoon (only spent 2 nights here before moving on), and we absolutely loved it. The first night we were in a 'superior' room, which come to find out does not have a/c and views leave a lot to be desired (one window which is adjacent to the parking area, and the volcano beyond that). The second night we moved to a junior suite, which does have a/c, and amazing views. Overall, we were dissapointed when we first arrived (due to the 'superior' room), but ended up leaving here with a fantastic experience. We spent 8 days in Costa Rica, 2 in the Arenal area before heading to a resort on the Pacific, and this was our favorite part of the trip. We would stay here again!

Arenal Lodge offers free horse-back riding as part of lodging which was an amazing experience overlooking volcano and lake. They also have the best bird-watching experience in their gardens as we saw more species there than in official parks. Our chalet was perfect - one king bed and one queen bed with mini-kitchen - overlooking the sights. It is situated in a remote section of La Fortuna - 16 miles east and up a huge hill-side but it is well-worth the trip. We stayed 3 nights. Restaurant is hit or miss with food at dinner. The Lodge also has a great hiking trail through the forest. We would stay there again with kids as they also had billiards, foosball table, playground, pool and hot tub.

This hotel sits a couple miles off the main road about 15 minutes from Fortuna. It has the most spectacular views of Arenal volcano. Each room faces the volcano which is an amazing view to wake upto. The restaurant and bar are staffed with the most friendly people and again you can enjoy a drink or meal facing the rain forest and volcano. They set out fruit for the birds so every morning you can enjoy your coffee watching them.
