Just southwest of the city of Green Bay, Appleton nestles peacefully along the banks of Lake Winnebago and the Fox River. A settlement built by fur traders in the 1830s, Appleton was incorporated as a village in 1853. Always a progressive city, Appleton became the location of the first hydro-electric central power station in 1882. And in 1886, the city put the first electric streetcar system into operation. Today, it is a bustling mid-size city, home to several colleges, and rich with interesting, historical, and natural points of interest.
Visitors to Appleton will find a range of activities waiting for them. Explore museums and traveling exhibits, shop downtown in unique and interesting shops, or take in one of the many events at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. Appleton can also be used as a great home base when attending nearby Green Bay Packers football games.
Appleton may be rather small, but downtown is still an exciting place to be. Pay a visit to the beautiful campus of Lawrence University. Then, explore the exhibits at the Paper Discovery Center on the banks of Fox River or the History Museum at the Castle. Nature lovers will find much to explore at Lake Winnebago, a 215 square mile freshwater lake. This popular vacation spot not only offers beauty and relaxation, but many fun outdoor events as well. If you want to experience some of the best things the state of Wisconsin has to offer, Appleton is the place to be.
If you love to shop, head to the Grand Chute area of Appleton and spend a little time at the Fox River Mall. With 1.21 millions square feet of space, this mall is the largest in Wisconsin. Fully-enclosed and with over 130 stores, it is easy to spend the day bargain hunting.
Other wonderful points of interest include the Hearthstone Historic House Museum, the first home ever lit by hydro-electricity. The Trout Museum of Art offers amazing exhibits for art lovers all year round. For a dazzling show, head to the University of Wisconsin Fox Valley’s Barlow Planetarium. With a 48 foot diameter projection dome and cutting edge video projection and automation technology, you can enjoy a night under the stars even in the middle of a sunny day.
Appleton and the Lake Winnebago area have no 4 or 5 star hotels. However, there are 28 comfortable and spacious 3 star hotels to choose from. All of these are located around town.
