Super 8 Story City2.0 out of 5.0

We stopped late one night on a road trip to Kansas. We got the last room which was clean and cozy for our overnight stay. My wife and I got up early, I used the shower and we left by 5:30. I didn't realize it until we got an hour away that I had left my phone in the room. I used my wife's phone to call and talk to the manager who happened to be the same guy who checked us in the night before and out that morning. I asked if he could just put it in the safe until we were on our way back through a few days later. He was happy to keep the phone safe for a few days and was extremely pleasant to deal with. When we got back he returned the phone just as I had left it and didn't even ask for any ransom money :) A+ all around for this hotel!
The hotel location was convenient. The gentleman behind the desk was pleasant and very helpful.
When arrived, the front desk informed us the cleaning crew never showed up so rooms were not ready at the 2:00 check in time. We had to get ready for a wedding by 4 so we were desperate. We would have appreciated a phone call so we could be changed arrangements. After 15 min of talking, he mentioned smoking rooms were available. Once getting a smoking room, only type of rooms that were unused night before, a golf ball sized spider was on the sink. Breakfast was not great, but it is a budget hotel so that was expected. But rest was all unexpected and very frustrating.
Story, Iowa, the town is small and quite and whenever possible we stay at the Super 8. The night manager, Colin, knows us and is always helpful. This time was a bit different in that my wife and I rode our motorcycles on the way to Rochester, MN. Colin insisted that we move our motorcycle so that the surveillance cameras had a clear view of our motorcycles. The next morning Sunny, the owner, greeted us and called me by name. We went on our way but made sure to stop on the return trip. We have always been treated well at this motel and I give it 5 stars.
When I made the reservation I held the room with my credit card but told the person we would pay cash at check-in. We paid cash for the room but 2 days later I had a charge on my credit card. When I called and spoke to the person at the actual hotel he called me a liar and said I did not pay cash! I told them to check the security cameras and they will see us paying cash. He responded that they only keep the recording for 1 day. He just kept repeating that we did not pay cash! He told me to call back 2 days later to speak to his employee and if he remembers us paying cash then he will believe me. Wouldn't they be $100 over in their cash drawers?? Wouldn't a large business like Super 8 keep better financial records for their daily business?! I told him they WILL be crediting my credit card for the overcharge because the room wasn't worth the original price much less double the cost! The room was very outdated and dirty. It smelled funny and the toilet wouldn't flush properly. It gives the name Super 8 a very bad reputation!!!
This was by-far the best Super 8 stay we've ever had. Don't expect five-star quality. But compared to what we've had with very overpriced Super 8s for the quality we've received, this Story City location was unexpectedly very good. Just 11 miles from Ames, and 40 minutes from Des Moines. The Mexican restaurant a block away was much better than we expected as well. If we're back in Ames area again, we'll first look at this Super 8! Story City is a very nice city as well...very clean!
Room smelled like smoke. Bathroom had cracked tile on the floor so bad it wobbled when you stepped on it. Ceiling files had stains from leaks and were ajar making me very uncomfortable. Shower floor was gross. Pillows had no filling. This was one of the worst rooms I have ever slept in. Would not return if someone paid me. Cheap room all around.
Everything about this motel is run down. The man who was working when we checked in was nice but the man when we left was rude and condescending. The blanket on the bed looked like it had been chewed, the refrigerator and hair dryer did not work and the bathroom ceiling was beyond disgusting.
Really enjoy staying here. Am in Story City once or twice a month and really feel welcomed. Staff are friendly and welcoming.
GREAT RECOMMENDATION Just off Interstate 35, visible from the freeway, this Super 8 was CLEAN and updated. It certainly appeared like a higher priced place inside. There is large trailer tractor parking across the street - easy to walk over - which means that car parking is only on one side (N) of the motel. If you need quiet, the south side faces an open field so no car doors or engines in the morning. The staff were helpful and kind. Frig and microwave were clean and worked. I can only say good things about this experience. Go, stay.
