My husband and I spent a lovely week in this hotel. We liked the fantastic breakfasts, the brilliant location and we found all the staff were very friendly and helpful especially Suzannah on reception. Even the cleaning staff were very helpful with a few requests we had. The hotel is in a terrific location and has beautiful views. We enjoyed the mile long board walk into Alvor with plenty of choice of restaurants along the way and in the village. It was our first holiday in Portugal and would love to go back.

Friendly welcoming staff. We chose to book bed and breakfast only so that we could explore the local restaurants, so in that respect I cannot comment on the dining options at the hotel. The breakfast options were wide and varied and enjoyed on the terrace overlooking the outdoor pool, often serenaded by a piano player. The beach is accessed by stairs or lift, alternatively there is an indoor and outdoor pool. Rooms were clean, confortable and well equipped. We were frequently asked if we needed new/extra towels for the room. The bar provides a peaceful end to the day often with a guitarist/bass player serenading as you enjoy a final 'night cap'. More popular with maturer travellers but easily caters for younger people as well.

Generally we found the hotel to be really nice. Very modern and fairly stylish when you walk into the reception area and friendly staff to greet you. We went for a suite as we were travelling with a toddler and they made up his cot/crib really nicely with cot bedding, baby pillow and duvet. The rooms had limited facilities and were full of Ikea furniture but we still liked the look, we would have liked a kettle to make a morning drink as we were up at 6am with our son and breakfast didn't start until 8am. The storage in the room was an issue, only 6 hangers left in the room and all of your clothes, cases, shoes and possessions were on show when we unpacked which instantly made the modern room look cluttered and messy. The food menu we found to be very limited, same breakfast every morning and same lunch and dinner menu without much choice. There were only around 3 or 4 options for kids and they were very basic including fish fingers and chips, chicken dippers and chips, plus a mini burger and chips - none of these options had any veg or salad available with them and all they could provide when asked was cucumber as a veg, my son had cucumber for breakfast, lunch & dinner with all his meals. Some of the food was nice but we were pleased we weren't staying longer than 3 days as we were already getting bored of the options. We didn't like the feel or menu in the Sea Deck and when we went in there we waited 10 mins with our friends and my son and we weren't acknowledged - during that time we spoke to 2 different couples who had just eaten there and pretty much warned us off so we left and went to some of the other restaurants along the boardwalk, they were all nice. Also we found there was no ambience in the sea deck, looks like a giant cafeteria and had two very loud TVs playing VH1 with loads of pop songs blaring out. The beach is amazing and the hotel is so close that's it's so easy to access. The pool is nice with little paddling pool for the kids which my son was in all the time. I didn't like Alvor town or marina, lots of Brits abroad so we stuck to the hotel, beach and boardwalk but lots of others seemed to love it.

Great hotel with fantastic wiev, the beach was clean and had a long boardwalk you could walk on into the village ALVOR. The pool area was big with many sunchairs, free towels,a very good pool restaurant with good food, drinks .The people who works here are very friendly and service minded , they helped us to have the best birthday ever with strawberrys cake champagne... Nice clean rooms and new towels twice a day ! Very good breakfirst with a lot to eat, fresh fruit, Coffee served to your table, omelette, pancakes egg ham yogurt juice champagne is just a few things you can eat.A with a fantastic wiev!!! The hotel is fresh and have many places you can sit down and relax, talk, have a drink and something to eat. We recommed the restaurant SUL at the hotel and the tasting menu "a turn to the south in 5 moments" fantastic food and so beautiful plates!! Edna , one of the restaurantsupervises were so helpful and friendly and made us feel so special and it was so important for her that we had a wonderful stay. And we did!!! The cocktailbar is a perfect place to end the night before you go to bed. Alford is a beautiful little village with many restaurants with good food!

Stayed for 8 nights in the Alvor Praia which is one of the best situated hotels we have ever visited in terms of views of the beach and sea but unfortunately the hotel is not quite up to 5 star. When we arrived we were shown to our Superior Sea View rooms but they were in an annex and located away from the main hotel and over by the pool area and up a set of steep stairs, rather than being in the main part of the hotel, on the 3rd floor or above and with a clear view of the sea as we were promised when we booked by telephone. Fortunately we checked in at around 3pm and they, after much 'discussion', moved us to the 4th floor in the main hotel. The daily room cleaning is not of a consistent standard, there is often a queue at reception , the coffee at the breakfast buffet is revolting and most annoyingly there are many unmarked steps in the hotel which would cause quite an injury if you were to fall so you have to be constantly watching your step especially when wearing sunglasses. The hotel only needs a few minor upgrades to make it a truly magnificent place to stay and Alvor, which is a €5 taxi ride away, is delightful and full of lovely restaurants

My wife and I stayed in this hotel from May 20th to May 30th '17. We researched in advance and found reviews very helpful so now its our turn to share. One of the reasons we choose this hotel was because the pool-side sun loungers were adjustable to the horizontal position - a sine qua non for us.We requested a high, sea-facing room with bathtub and that is precisely what we were assigned (room 440) Room size adequate and sound insulation could be better Had a thoroughly enjoyable stay thanks to reception staff, porter, maintenance person, housekeeping staff and Rita in the bar, whose grasp of customer service was exceptional - thank you all. Finally you must visit Paulo Bento and his team in the restaurant - just great. Alvor is a 30-minute seaside boardwalk from the hotel and if you feel too lazy to walk back to the Pestana Alvor Praia, there is an excellent taxi service for a mere €5.

This is an amazing hotel, breathtaking views along the beach, great location as down on in the sand in seconds. Beautiful pool overlooking the beach plus all the staff are very attentive and make you feel very welcome.

Excellent holiday except for one irritation which is why I am giving 4 stars. Arriving at 11am and being told by Reception that our room would not be available until 4pm. I know your blurb, Pestana, says vacate by 10am and unavailable until 4pm, but really 6 hour turnaround!!!!!....get more cleaning staff Pestana, this is ridicules!! I am sure not so long ago it only used to be 3 hours? However I was directed to our VC rep who spoke nicely to the Cleaner and lo-and-behold we managed to get in by 2.30 (but couldn’t Reception have done this when we arrived? Just show a bit of initiative and slight rearrangement of the Cleaners rota/customer goodwill) The other thing Pestana, reduce your bar prices and sales will increase. I mean 5 euros for a bottle of water!!!! This just encourages the punters to buy outside the complex and have drinks in their room

Not sure what to expect after reading reviews but this was the only 5 star ish hotel in the area and being set adjacent to a superb looking beach looked good Upon arrival we were upgraded to a seaview room (which was strange as we had already booked one) and this turned out to be a small newly built block just off to one side of the main hotel. The upgrade may have been due to it being a new room as opposed to others which I believe are a bit dated. The room was modern but quite small but perfectly OK. The balcony was very small but no problems as we rarely use one anyway. The room overlooked one side of the pool but the sea view was somewhat compromised by a very ugly cuboid building set right in our view line. This housed not only the pool towel area but also the lifts to the beach (which was an excellent feature) and other hotel rooms. The height of the building was due presumably to hold the lift equipment. A pity as it does spoil what would otherwise be a super view. The bed was quite soft but OK but a big no no were the enormous pillows! I've never seen such large ones. Quite useless for me as I only have one normal size as I'm sure do many people and there were no alternatives in the room. We had to ask for normal sized ones which duly turned up after several requests.. A word here about the room maid service. For the first 4 days of our holiday (we were there for 7 nights) the room was not cleaned properly at all. The balcony got dirtier and dirtier and after the first day the loo paper ran out along with the box of tissues. The following day when we got back to the room neither had been replaced and only one towel had been left. It must have been obvious I would have thought that these items would have easily been noticed by the maid and replaced accordingly but no. The small soap bar also got smaller smaller each day and we waited to see how long it would be before it was replaced - it was day 6 by which time the bar was about the size of a 10p piece! This needs looking at and is certainly not 5 star standard. The hotel itself is a bit of an oddity with large open sitting areas furnished with not particularly good quality furniture and with a pool bar being unattractive. The pool area itself is large but completely soulless. Just a large open area with a lot of uncomfortable sunloungers and a couple of palm trees. The area is mainly laid to decking and it is in poor condition with many planks lifting and warping so be careful those of you with young children. We ate only one evening in the hotel and it was a buffet. I think the a la carte is only on certain evenings. The buffet was OK and could have been a buffet anywhere and of no great quality. The breakfasts however were excellent with a very large choice so no complaints there. As you wander round the hotel you come across empty areas with no obvious uses. On the second floor above the restaurant there is an enormous flat roof with a couple of seats and a gravelled area, quite what its there for is anybodies guess - its like the architect ran out of ideas half way through! The cocktail bar is very pleasant with again a large open terrace with very poor quality tables and chairs and has no atmosphere at all. BEWARE! if you have a rental car. There is a large car park which has to have the most badly designed car park on the planet. The parking bays are very narrow and many have sun shades over them. All of the bays have a low stone dwarf walls about 12 inches high all round and therein lies the main problem. You have to be very careful not to bump into them as they are invisible from inside the car and because the bays are so narrow you can only open one door as the door bottom grates on to the top of said dwarf wall. Also the sunshade support poles are very cleverly designed to align exactly where the door is so you cannot get out without clambering over to the passenger side! A small criticism perhaps but not when you return you hire car with a damaged valance or door! The prime feature of this hotel is the beach. Accessed by lift or steps it is fabulous. We live in the Channel Islands and we have superb beaches but this one deserves special mention. Lovely clean sand and stretching for miles so great if you want to walk. There are sunloungers there which cost 12 euros for a whole day or 8 for half a day. I see one reviewer here only commented on the fact that he had to pay and that they should be free to hotel guests. He therefore gave the hotel only one star - not sure why people like that bother to comment if that's all they have to say. One point to note here however during our stay in mid May the weather was superb but it was a bit windy - up to force 5/6 on a couple of days and this bought up a big surf. Great fun for us adults who are good swimmers but be very careful if you have young children. There is a life guard however but be very watchful. All in all a superb break in lovely Portugal and I think we would certainly return to the hotel as it really is the best one in this area. A word on the staff also. All very friendly and professional and all most polite and helpful. We went into Alvor town most evenings either by a 30 minute walk along the boardwalk or a 3 minute taxi ride for 5 euros. Brilliant place to eat and watch the (sometimes bizarre!) world go by whilst sipping an aperitif. Lots of excellent restaurants serving fantastic fresh fish at prices half of what you would pay at home. For a fabulous fish supper try the Atlandido restaurant just along the beach from the hotel - excellent!

We chose Alvor and the hotel based on recommendations from friends. We were not disappointed. Our 2 girls aged 8 and 11 were on half term a week before most other schools so the resort was relatively quiet and the kids club was not open. This was not a problem for us though. Most of the guests were over 60 with a few young families. Again not a problem for us. There was a good mixture of nationalities and everyone was very friendly. When we arrived there was a problem with the room and we ended up moving rooms twice. Whilst this was a bit of a pain the staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. The room we eventually stayed in was essentially two interconnecting rooms so ideal for families whilst offering some privacy for the adults. The girls had inflatable mattresses to sleep on which were actually pretty comfortable and stable enough even for our 11 year old who is big for her age. Some reviewers have said that the hotel is not 5 star and I do think it depends which room you stay in. We saw at least 3 different rooms and the standard was quite different. I highly recommend booking a room with a sea view because if you don't there is every chance you could be overlooking the car park. Or the bins. Some of the rooms particularly the bathrooms could do with some refurbishment but on the whole we found it a very nice place to stay. The breakfast buffet was excellent with everything you could possibly want including freshly cooked omelettes to order, freshly made pancakes and waffles. The hotel location was perfect with direct access to the stunning beach and an incredible view. There is a boardwalk which leads directly into Alvor and takes about 30-40 minutes if you have children. A fast walking adult could do it in about 20 minutes. There are other Pestana hotels located along the boardwalk which are closer to Alvor town but from what we could see, the Alvor Praia hotel is the nicest. Worth being a bit further out in my opinion. There are many good restaurants next to the beach so you don't even need to go into Alvor but it's definitely worth seeing. As we were slightly out of season the town was relatively quiet but had enough life around for a good atmosphere. We were able to get seats at the best restaurants without booking but in high season you would definitely need to book. There is lots to do - boat trips, Zoomarine etc or you can do nothing. We were in Lagos in August two years ago and it was so hot and so busy that we decided to come earlier and the weather was just right. We will be booking again for next year!
