Arrived on 11th June for 11 nights. Check-in was pretty quick at 12:15 and good news was that room was ready. Quick change of clothes and a look around the place. The three pools looked clean and plenty of available sun loungers (for now), so looked promising. As we had arrived around lunchtime, we headed to the buffet restaurant (opens at 1:00) and had a nice lunch with plenty of food choice (salads, soups, hot dishes and deserts) plus the usual self service beer, wines and soft drinks. Service in the restaurant was also good, with plates being removed promptly. Initially there were two drinks locations for the afternoon, the poolside bar and a soft drinks section on the patio of the saloon bar. After 2 days being there, the swim-up bar was opened for the Summer. Drinks were pretty good quality apart from the cocktails, which seemed sweet and were made of slush, stored in large plastic mixing tubs. Evening meal was in the Grill restaurant (booked for us on arrival by reception). This was similar to the buffet, but seemed to have less choice on offer. The Saloon bar was open from 6:00, which had indoor seating for the evening stage entertainment and an outdoor patio. This was in addition to the poolside bar, which stayed open until 11:00. The rooms were pretty standard offering. Two single beds put together to form a large double. This was very comfortable, although the pillows (one large and one small) always seem strange to me, but adequate. We had a balcony overlooking the road. We had read previously that these rooms could be noisy, however once the patio door was closed, then we heard no such noise. There was air conditioning, however, it didn't seem too efficient and only just cooled the room down. Over the holiday we eat mainly in the buffet restaurant, and chose to eat outdoors. The main waiter, Carlos, was excellent and after a day or so, built up a good rapport and served us well. The food varied most days, but there were many staple dishes day after day. The speciality dishes were very good, especially the crepe Suzette and the baked alaska!!! Getting sun loungers was not a problem for us in the first 5 days, as you could still find a couple together all day. However this changed after this, and the number of people increased dramatically. You had to reserve your beds with towels (supplied) by 9:30ish. Evening entertainment was pretty good in our eyes. Matteo (Entertainments manager) was visible during the day, and was in many of the evening shows with his team. The troupe of about 8 were hard working and some very skilled (Raphael and Laura in particular), although the shows were very cheesy (in a good way) but majority of the singing was mimed, which wasn't a problem for us, as the entertainment was still good. The live band on the patio was good, but the magician seemed poor. Daytime entertainment was also good, with the Aquafit in the pool well attended. A special mention must be made about the management. There are 3 managers very visible around the resort (dressed in suits). They walk around all the restaurants and often help out plate clearing, but most of all, they constantly ask how things are, whether good or bad. They seem to be listening, but as this was our first visit, don't know if anything changes. Sammy, in particular, was most engaging as well as friendly. A couple of problems we encountered. 1. We like sunbathing, but not all day. Apart from going inside, there were very limited shaded seating areas with soft seats. 2. Portuguese law prohibits smoking indoors, however outdoors is fine. As we liked to eat outdoors in restaurants and drink outdoors in bars, then there was always a table close by where someone was smoking. Not nice when eating. I would say around 20% of guests were from UK, but rest made up of German, Portuguese, Polish, Dutch, French and Belgian. A large percentage of these smoked. This was also a problem around the pool. Overall, a very good hotel. Food was varied and good choice. The staff, including management were top notch. We will return in quieter period.

This hotel is well managed by the manager Mr Miguel. He is a very visible presence welcoming guests and ensuring they have a memorable stay,The hotel has been refurbished and is a standard RIU.The animation team try hard and excellently led by Matteo who puts his heart and soul into the role. There are areas which could improve the hotel. The self service style in all the restaurants and bars wears thin after a week.It would be nice to have a part of the hotel bar or restaurant with some service. The other area are in the evening entertainment some outside acts would be nice. The one band they had were poor and had no audience. The staff try hard and make your stay pleasurable.

We chose this hotel mainly due to the location . On arrival we were dealt with very efficiently ,our room was ready despite arriving at 10.30am ,room was very comfortable and clean . The pool areas were full to bursting on the day we arrived ,not what we were expecting, we also noticed that quite a few smokers around the pool ,not something I wanted to endure while we were relaxing ,I really think that there ought to be designated smoking areas away from the pool ,this was also the case outside the restaurant eating area ,it seemed to me that the smokers took over the outside areas making it uncomfortable for non smokers ,we ate inside the restaurant for this very reason . The food was ok ,plenty to choose from ,the Asia/Grill restaurant was lovely and worth booking . There is a lovely beach not far from the hotel and it goes on for miles ,so if you fancy a nice walk or even a relax next to the sea it's a must .

Just arrived back early hours this morning. We travelled from manchester on 15th june til 26th june 2017. The hotel is located in a good locations shops restuarants only 5mins walk away would reccommend a stroll down plus it leads you to the beach. You can access the beach down approx 120 steps at the side of the hotel but it would be no good if you climbing stairs on the way back up. Th weather in june wss great . The rooms are clean however we did only have out sheets changed once in 11days. However going back to the rooms i requested a pool view room on booking the holiday 8months ago however when we arrived we was put in room 434 which was above reception facing the road which was pretty noicy with coaches coming etc. When speaking to other couples there was a few we met that had pool view rooms on arrival with only booking the holiday 10-15 weeks before hand. I did go to reception to see if we could change rooms and after 3 days of being there we changed to 523 to which you then could see the pool and the sea 😁😁. There is a free safe and air condifioning in the rooms which was also a plus. There are 3 restaurants they are all buffet style and self service. Asian - sushi and chinese food was ok but can be very cramped. Bar & grill was ok too grilled meats etc and the normal to which served a mixture of everything your typical all inclusive foods. Whilst there we did a couple of exursions dolphin spotting well worth it 35 euros plus 8 euros for transport each. We went to alberferia in a taxi 10 euros each way and a group of 6 of us went to villa mora which was a lovely 35 euros each way. The entertainment was good something different every night and the team work hard. Bar staff work hard at the pool side well done. Departing the hotel we had a night flight we asked to extend our room and was told we couldnt as they are fully booked . You have to be out of the room at 12pm no courtesy rooms so your left showering in the spa communial showers. Was told by staff there are between 30 -35 thousand guests in each month of june and july so very busy. Another plus side we met some great people and made some good friends. The weather was great and have come back with a nice tan. Everybody has there own preferences and opinions i had read some reviews on here before we travelled some were negatives snd some were positives which i lnow happens everywhere but i will be honest portugal is a great place to travel with lots of nice friendly people . Would i go back to portugal ? Yes would i go back to this hotel ? Probably not but never say never.

Just returned from a 10 night holiday - the hotel is exactly as pictured with very lovely modern rooms, I have to agree with a previous comment that it is very much like a premiere inn. We were in room 375 which had a lovely sea view and partial view of the pool and gardens - was quiet on an evening and not in direct sun so the room remained cool. The hotel has beautiful well kept gardens and the hard working staff keep it clean and tidy at all times. The rooms and all other public areas are equally pristine. The buffet restaurant provides a wide selection of well cooked food - something for everyone and lots of lovely fresh salads. Breakfast provided lots of fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereals along with lovely bacon eggs beans etc or you can go for the continental breakfast if you like salad and slices meat (not for me !) There are plenty of sun beds, however when we arrived after lunch, there wasn't a sunbed spare, so we had to sit in the bar with a nice cold drink, it was usual for there to be none spare by lunchtime. We stayed around the smaller pool as it was much quieter than the main pool and after the first day never had another problem getting a sunbed. Drinks were not very alcoholic particularly during the day, but they didn't appear to get any stronger at night, the wine with lunch and dinner was nice and the cava also lovely, you could self serve beer wine and soft drinks, the bar service was always prompt with hardly any waiting time at all. We tried the grill restaurant but really this was just like the buffet with less choice and felt a bit like sitting in a school canteen - onto the dress code for dinner - we dressed for dinner, however this seems to be a 5 star hotel with 3 star guests who wear the same in the evening as they do round the pool - shorts flip flops etc, I'm not a snob but seeing men's hairy armpits in a sleeveless vest when eating my dinner is not pleasant. All in all this is a lovely hotel with helpful friendly staff who will help with anything - you will have a lovely holiday

The Good: Location - in between some beautiful places, visited vilamoura marina, falesia beach and albufeira. Food - in main restaurant varied, tasted good desserts were yummy, food and snacks were available all day pretty much. Entertainment fun, mini games during the day and mat on the pool was good fun. Cleanliness - rooms, pool and the whole hotel very clean and well maintained. Self service to soft drinks, water and ice tea was a nice touch. Free bottled water from reception whenever needed Free safe and air conditioning in room Didn't spoil the stay but: Lack of music during the day perhaps some music in the swim up bar or by the pool for an hour would help atmosphere Would be nice for the Asian restaurant to feel more exclusive as you have to book it. Tables were packed in so it felt cramped, very hectic and background music would be good to mask clashing of plates and cuttlery. Evening entertainment started a bit late, you are left hanging around after dinner most nights for an hour and a half. Nightclub/disco music wasn't very current and room layout a bit awkward as square seating area made it seem like people were waiting for a show. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would visit again. Would recommend for a luxury stay and beautiful location. The team throughout the hotel work very hard keep up the good work.

This is a lovely hotel in which the staff all make a massive effort to make your stay a great one. It is a very friendly and professional and helpful staff that give you the opinion that nothing is too much for them. I assure you that you will love it. The food, the entertainment are also good and the superb beaches less than 5 mins walk away are really great one - Falesia is wide and long and the other Olhos d'Agua is a beautiful family beach smaller but picturesque.

Second time we have been to the area - the beach is amazing. Hotel facilities very good - serving yourself with drinks through the day is a good idea. Rooms spotlessly clean with good views. Food is standard but Asian restaurant on site is really nice.

We stayed at this lovely hotel between 11th and 18th June 2017. Lovely spacious contemporary room with a big balcony overlooking the pool. Lots of variety of fresh food. Fabulous Grill and Asian restaurant, all self service still but lovely food and nice to have different flavours. I celebrated my birthday whilst we were there and the hotel reception left a card and bottle of sparkling wine in our room.. a lovely touch! The management were so visible always walking around and were so friendly and approachable , never seen that before in a hotel. My partner proposed to me on our last evening on our balcony of our room, so this was a wonderful end to our holiday! Thoroughly recommend the Clubhotel Riu Gaurana and we will definitely be back.

Lovely clean hotel & staff helpful! Especially Elenni in the dining room! easy to get a bed before 10am Shame entertainment team only mime but plenty going on! My only moan would be the showers need updating as constantly went from very hot (could be bad if using on a child) to freezing cold did report to rep & reception but nothing happened! Also be nice to have tea:coffee in the room luckily read some other reviews so took a travel one as we had a baby with us so needed for bottles But a very nice holiday & would return
