Your gay Dallas vacation
This city has a larger-than-life history and reputation. No wonder it's affectionately called the "Big D," which is saying a lot in oversized Texas. Often overlooked by gay and lesbian travelers as a conservative city, many who do venture to Dallas are surprised to find a hospitable and forward-thinking populace. Dallas is, after all, home to the largest gay and lesbian church in the world, The Cathedral of Hope. This moneyed city is also said to have one of the largest gay populations in the U.S., and the biggest in Texas.

Dallas highlights
-
Dallas gayborhood
The main LGBT area is the Oak Lawn neighborhood, which is one of America's most hopping gay districts. The lively four-block swathe of Cedar Springs Road from Oak Lawn Avenue to Douglas Avenue is where you'll find several bustling gay bars – including, of course, JR's (for the boys) and nearby Sue Ellen's (for the girls).
Deep Ellum, Greenville and more
Other queer-friendly districts in Dallas include Deep Ellum, east of downtown with live music venues; Lower Greenville Avenue with its vintage clothing stores and bohemian nightlife; and The Cedars, a revitalized, artsy 'hood with swanky eateries and polished condos and lofts.
Dallas Pride
Pride happens in Dallas in September, and there's also a big gay charity event called Razzle Dazzle Dallas in Oak Lawn in June. Oak Lawn also has a bustling street party every year for Halloween.
Cultural centers
Other places worth visiting include the I.M. Pei-designed Dallas Museum of Art, and Dealey Plaza where J.F.K. was shot. In the neighboring city of Fort Worth, there's a wealth of museums including the Kimbell Art Museum, and Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth -- as well as the lesbian-popular National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.
Insider tips for Dallas gay travel
-
Rent a car
Dallas is extremely spread out, covering nearly 400-square-miles, and although the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has an expansive bus and light rail system, you'll probably still want a car to get around town.
Watch out for conventions
Dallas is the country's second-most-popular convention destination, and when big ones are in town, rooms can be hard to come by. Visit the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau web site to check the convention calendar.
Check out the outdoor sculptures
The city's Nasher Sculpture Center is world-class, featuring works by Picasso, Rodin and Miro. After perusing the center's gardens, pick up the "Walking Sculpture" brochure (available at the city's visitor centers), which will lead you to 33 outdoor public sculptures in the downtown area.
