Orange County Gay and Lesbian Vacations

Orange County

The Pacific Coast

Your gay Orange County vacation

“The O.C.” conjures up images of buff surfers, wealthy housewives, and miles of postcard beaches – and the reality isn’t that far off. The upscale seaside towns lining Orange County call themselves the “Orange Coast” and are home to fabulous resorts and upscale beach communities. This region between L.A. and San Diego was once known as the conservative “Orange Curtain,” but it’s now an area where gay and lesbians feel more at home. The LGBT scene in vast Orange Country has traditionally been centered in the artsy and queer village of Laguna Beach. But over time, gay and lesbian establishments have popped up all around Orange County. And Orange is home to the gayest attraction of them all: the original Disneyland, aka The Happiest Place on Earth.

Orange County highlights

  • LGBT events and other happenings

Gay Days at Disneyland in early October is a great time to join thousands of LGBT red shirt-wearing revelers in the Magic Kingdom. In August, a small but friendly Pride happens in Downtown Santa Ana. The world’s top wave riders flock to Huntington Beach in late July/early August for the U.S. Open of Surfing. The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters in July and August is famous for its recreations of masterpieces of art created with live actors. And the town of San Juan Capistrano, holds the Return of the Swallows Celebration every March, celebrating the annual bird migration.

    Seeing the sights

Disneyland in Anaheim is part of a whole complex of attractions, including the California Adventure theme park, the shopping/dining/entertainment district of Downtown Disney, and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel. Follow the famous Pacific Coast Highway to explore Orange’s lovely seaside enclaves of surfer-popular Huntington Beach, upscale Dana Point, and atmospheric Newport Beach surrounding charming Balboa Island, with its historic pavilion and old-fashioned pier.

Insider tips for Orange County gay travel

  • Consider John Wayne Airport

    • Bypass busy LAX and fly directly into the mellower John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana. John Wayne is Orange County’s largest airport and only 15 miles from Disneyland.

    Throw Catalina into the mix

    • Santa Catalina Island (simply called “Catalina” by Californians) is an enchanting Mediterranean-style isle off the coast of L.A. You can board ferries from the industrial port of Long Beach, but a more pleasant option is the seasonal ferry from scenic Dana Point in Orange County.

Get a Disney Park Hopper pass

    • A Park Hopper pass will allow you to go back and forth as much as you’d like between Disneyland and the neighboring California Adventure theme park. And the Park Hopper passes come in a variety of multi-day choices.
