Los Angeles highlights
-
LA gayborhoods
Santa Monica Boulevard is the focal point of most of the area’s LGBT action—with probably the best lesbian nightlife on the West Coast. Silverlake, once seen as a gay leathery village is still home to a wide swath of LGBT hot spots.
Eventful LA
June’s pride event and Halloween in West Hollywood—both huge street events with lots of flair—as well as the August’s Sunset Junction street fair in Silverlake, are not to be missed. Get tickets for the Outfest in July, or Fusion, a film festival for LGBT people of color in March.
Fun and games
Attractions in this enormous metropolis are varied as your imagination -- shopping on Rodeo Drive, studio tours in Universal City, romantic boardwalks in Venice and the landmark Disneyland.
Around the area
Downtown includes great museums and the ethnic enclaves of Little Tokyo, Chinatown and the nearby Korea Town. A ferry trip to Catalina Island oozes an upscale Mediterranean vibe. LA has also upped its cultural cache with many new museums, opera houses and theaters.
Insider tips for Los Angeles gay travel
-
Beware June Gloom and the Santa Anas
Two LA-specific weather phenomena are the fog banks and overcast skies that can hang around for days in June (and sometimes from March to August), and the Santa Ana winds that can make you feel like Dorothy in Kansas.
Join a live studio audience
Probably the only way you’ll actually see a celebrity in LA is by seeing a TV show being taped. Tickets are free, and are sometimes handed out on Hollywood Boulevard or Universal City.
If you don’t drive, stay in West Hollywood
If you don’t drive or are wary of LA’s monumental traffic, and simply want to focus on the city of angels’ gay life, stay in one of WeHo’s upscale hotels. You’ll be within walking distance of gay nightlife, shops and restaurants.
