Located in the Pacific state of Jalisco, sandwiched between mountains and a gorgeous bay, Vallarta attracts not only a swath of gay and lesbian North American and European travelers, but also a fair share of queer Mexicans. Puerto Vallarta is home to more than a dozen LGBT hotels and guesthouses, a pumping selection of gay bars and clubs, a world-famous gay beach called “Blue Chairs” along with its adjoining neighbor “Green Chairs.”

Puerto Vallarta highlights

The LGBT scene
Gay tours and cruises. Fine dining. Sophisticated art galleries. P.V. could be considered the Key West or Provincetown of the western coast of Mexico, where the locals don’t bat an eye at all the gays and lesbians frolicking about.
Zona Romantica
Zona Romantica is the heart of LGBT life. More modern hotel and shopping areas have arisen north of the cobblestone old town, allowing the area to retain much of its colonial charm.
Vallarta surroundings
The rebuilt Malecon (the town’s main waterfront street) presents sculptures in an outdoor palm-lined art walk, and galleries outnumber churches. Despite the onslaught of timeshares and ex-pats who now call it home, Vallarta still feels authentically Mexico. Fun side trips include natural hot springs, mountain villages and boat tours for swimming with dolphins.

There are plenty of beaches to choose from
The gay scene at Blue Chairs beach is fun, but the crowds can make it feel like traffic jam. Extending north and south of P.V. are more than 26 miles of beaches lining the Bay of Banderas, where you’ll find more elbow room, if less gay eye candy.
Join gay excursions
No need to be packed in with straight tourists when going on excursions: Blue Chairs Beach Resort (right on the beach) arranges LGBT boat trips, horseback jungle tours, zip lining trips and scuba dives.
Be aware of holidays
Certain weeks in P.V. can get packed with both foreigners and Mexicans. This includes New Year’s to Epiphany on Jan. 6, Semana Santa (Holy Week) just before Easter, and All Saint’s and All Soul’s Days (Nov. 1-2).
