Curacao Gay and Lesbian Vacations
Your gay Curaçao vacation
One of the few islands of gay-friendliness in the Caribbean, Curaçao has in recent years put itself at the forefront of gay tourism in the region. It comes as no surprise that Curaçao is part of one of the most liberal entities on earth: the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It launched a gay and lesbian travel web site, many of its hotels are members of gay tourism associations, and gay and lesbian party nights are thrown at various local bars. Even life partners of citizens can receive permanent residence on the isle.

Curacao highlights
-
Curaçao climate
The island is situated just outside of the region's hurricane belt, 35 miles north of the Venezuelan coast. It's a rather dry and desert-like island strewn with cacti and dotted with old windmills and hilltop forts, many of which have been turned into restaurants.
Historic capital
The capital of Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage site that dates back to the 1500s, is punctuated by upscale gambling joints and pastel-hued buildings. The rest of the island is filled with more than 30 beaches and 40-plus dive areas.
Events in Curaçao
The big event of the year is the Curaçao Carnival, which begins on New Year's Day. A highlight is the Festival di Tumba during the second week in February, when local musicians vie for prizes. Throughout the whole season there are outdoor street dances, concerts and parades. Curaçao is also that rare Caribbean isle with a bona fide gay event -- the "Get Wet" weekend in late September, with outdoor movies, pool parties and boat trips.
Insider tips for Curacao gay travel
-
Choose your beach carefully
The northwestern coastline is rugged and not good for swimming, but the western coastline is sheltered with mellower waters. Locals call large beaches playas and smaller inlets bocas.
Get taxi quotes
Curaçao cabs don't have meters, so you need to get a quote from the driver before going anywhere to avoid a surprise later.
Use English or Spanish
Even though it's a Dutch island, both English and Spanish are widely spoken and understood. You'll also hear the local Papiamentu dialect -- a mixture of Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, French, English and Arawak Indian.
