More on Portland from AOL Travel

  • There's a reason Portland has a reputation for being a city full of tree huggers: It is home to an array of pretty trees worthy of a warm embrace. Locals and tourists alike often flock to one of this Pacific Northwestern city's inviting parks to enjoy the greenery, including Forest Park, a 5,000-acre sanctuary that boasts more than 80 miles of trails. You can also soak up Mother Earth's charm while moseying around Portland's Japanese Garden, which offers five garden varieties punctuated with water elements; or smell the roses -- literally -- at the International Rose Test Garden, renowned for its 8,000 rose bushes from across the world. Portland is also known for its book-smart inhabitants, so it shouldn't be a surprise to learn that one of the city's most popular attractions is a hip bookstore, Powell's City of Books. Its name alludes to the more than one million books perched upon shelves that run the length of an entire city block. After all that walking and reading, do what any Portland dweller would do and head to Voodoo Doughnut's for one of the city's most famous sugary treats. Try the namesake Voodoo Doll doughnut, a raised yeast confection shaped like a doll, complete with pretzel stake and oozing raspberry center.
