For those who haven’t yet visited this scrappy city on the south shores of Lake Erie, the idea of a Cleveland vacation may surprise some. But before the decline of urban areas during the second half of the 20th century, Cleveland was one of the most powerful industrial hubs in the country, given its prime location on Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River. That also means it had philanthropic wealth and a thriving cultural scene—both of which were important to help turn what had become known as “The Mistake on the Lake” in the 1970s and ‘80s into a now-revitalized destination. Landing the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, which opened in 1995 in the North Shore area, was instrumental for that turnaround. Pro sports teams provide another draw for tourists, but so too do Cleveland’s art, science and academic centers. Playhouse Square Center is the second largest performing arts center in the U.S., and one could spend a long weekend just visiting University Circle—a circular drive through Case Western Reserve University that also houses the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland Botanical Garden, Children’s Museum of Cleveland, and much more. The city also is a popular film and TV setting and has landmarked several of its historic buildings, rewarding architecture buffs. Contradicting its manufacturing heritage, Cleveland is incredibly green and nicknamed the Forest City for its “emerald ring” of four stunning parks surrounding the county. That leaves little time for food, but visitors shouldn’t miss the city’s Slavic specialties kielbasa and pierogies, or its contemporary restaurants, including those helmed by celebrity chef Michael Symon.
