“Hostess City of the South” sounds like a difficult nickname to live up to, but Savannah does it with the effortless grace of a satin-gloved Southern belle. The Spanish moss-draped trees that line its cobbled streets help set a languid, welcoming tone for this busy port city where the hospitality is as ubiquitous as the sweet tea. One of the few Southern cities left virtually unscathed by the Civil War, Savannah’s Antebellum architecture draws tourists from around the world. The Savannah Historic District is one of the nation’s largest and just one of five in the city. Whether you choose a self-guided tour, or explore with the help of a local expert, the city’s squares, mansions, and public buildings can fill days for the architecturally curious. Savannah is also known as the “Forest City,” and while oak and magnolia trees line streets all over town, the 30-acre Forsyth Park is a haven for tree lovers. Be sure not to miss the park’s grand fountain, which film buffs might recognize from the original “Cape Fear.” Those seeking the “Bad Girl” sculpture made famous on the cover of the Savannah-based “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” will find it in the Telfair Museum of Art. While the pace of life may seem slow, rest assured that local restaurateurs in Paula Deen’s adopted hometown work hard to please palates. Sure, you’ll find grits and fried chicken here, but Savannah is best known for its seafood and for chefs unafraid to experiment with fusions of the many cultures woven into the city’s history.
