Best Time to Go
Santa Barbara, California has welcoming weather all year round. So while most people visit during the summer season, mostly because of school vacations, it's very comfortable and much less expensive during the winter. With a Mediterranean-type climate and temperatures that only reach the mid-70s during most of the year, the city is a welcome place to escape any weather extreme. Most crowded during the summer, especially during the Summer Solstice Celebration in June, people also aim for travel during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival during February.

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara has long been a favorite getaway for Hollywood stars. Even the anti-Hollywood establishment Ronald and Nancy Reagan owned a ranch here for 25 years, which was dubbed the Western White House during his years in office. Add in a climate similar to that of the Mediterranean, and it’s easy to see why this upscale town has been nickname the “American Riviera.” After a 1925 earthquake nearly leveled Santa Barbara, planners passed strict guidelines and rebuilt the town with a cohesive architecture honoring its native Chumash, Mexican and Spanish colonial history. Mission Santa Barbara, founded in 1786, is a top tourist draw here, as are the beaches—from crowded East Beach to tucked-away Butterfly Beach. Sunbathers in need of a break from the rays and surf can head for the main shopping drag, State Street, where local boutiques mix with art galleries, souvenir shops and luxury retailers. No Santa Barbara vacation would be complete without fine dining and wine on the itinerary, especially for culinary travelers craving farm-to-table menus. Though not as famous as those of its Northern California neighbors, the vineyards of Santa Barbara County are characterized by the family-owned, small-batch wineries made famous by the movie “Sideways.” Many can be tasted during a tour of the town’s Urban Wine Trail, but it’s also worth the hour’s drive to the towns of Solvang, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, Ballard and Buellton to experience each firsthand.
