Best time to take a vacation to Napa

  • Best Time to Go

While there isn't really a bad time to visit the California wine country, Napa and Sonoma do have some congested times of the year. Summer is the big vacation time in the United States, and many people travel to California for summer vacation, raising rates and causing congestion. In winter, the weather is very wet and cooler, between 37 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and you can avoid crowds and enjoy cozy fireplaces, more tables at restaurants, and light traffic. September and October is one of the most expensive times to travel to these areas, because everyone wants to see the grape harvest and take tours of wineries in full production mode.

  • Napa Valley enjoys pleasant, some would say perfect, weather nearly all year. In late summer, temperatures can approach 100 degrees Fahrenheit, especially in the northwestern part of the valley. Winters are pleasantly mild. Most of the year's rain falls in the winter, but that's only about 24 inches. High temperatures in December and January are usually in the 60s or low 70s. In terms of weather, there's no bad time to visit Napa Valley. Great events happen all year long, but especially in summer and fall. The Music in the Vineyards Festival in August pairs some of the world's elite classical musicians with the stunning scenery of the Napa Valley wineries.

Harvest season brings the crush to California's wine country

A fall California vacation in Wine Country is a sensory feast. Lush vineyards stretch in every direction, beckoning to passerby with their vividly colored leaves and rich, ripened grapes. Aromatic wines delight the palette, and wineries come to life during grape crushing season in mid-September.

Town of Napa comes of age

The formerly dowdy little town at the heart of glamorous Wine Country has undergone an extensive makeover/expansion during the past few years.

Summer with wine and roses in Sonoma, Napa Valley

Harvest is when everyone typically thinks to travel to Wine Country, but I remember summer in Sonoma and Napa as the best season of all.
