The town of Sedona has a population of just over 10,000, but more than two million visitors a year are drawn to this iconic Southwest American city in the Verde Valley of Arizona. Almost all come because of its Red Rocks—stunning limestone formations—whether their pursuits are physical or metaphysical, or both. Hollywood came calling almost immediately and had a production outpost here until the 1970s. Nature lovers come to hike and climb, while artists and photographers seek to capture the brilliant orange- and red-hued vistas. Native Americans have long considered the area sacred, and New Age tourists come for spiritual retreats and for the special energy believed to emanate from Sedona’s four “vortex sites,” one of which houses the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Go horseback riding, or get a survey of the land with a Pink Jeep tour, which also can arrange for an elaborate picnic spread on the rocks. Finish the day with a relaxing massage at one of Sedona’s many spas and resorts. Drawing a relatively affluent crowd, shopping in Sedona means dozens of art galleries and stores specializing in jewelry and crafts made by local artisans. Crystals are popular. Be sure to also visit the McDonald’s—the only one in the world with turquoise arches, because the city thought yellow ones would clash with the surrounding red rocks.
