More on Flagstaff from AOL Travel

  • Don’t be fooled by its Arizona address—Flagstaff is less than three hours from Phoenix, but it has more in common with Denver. It’s located in a ponderosa pine forest, and with an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet, the city naturally is a cool, popular escape from the scorching summers in the desert to the south. Nearly 100 inches of snow fall annually on the nearby San Francisco Peaks, which helps draw those looking for a ski retreat in winter. In addition to its outdoor appeal, Flagstaff’s history helps attract five million visitors each year. The highlight of downtown is the five-block Historic Railroad District, and part of the beloved U.S. Route 66 cuts through the center of town. Follow it out to Route 66 landmarks or to one of the many national parks near Flagstaff. The Grand Canyon is just 80 miles to the north, and nearby Walnut Canyon National Monument and Wupatki National Monument both have hiking trails and some of the country’s best-preserved Native American ruins. The people of Walnut Canyon fled when Sunset Crater Volcano erupted in 1064, leaving in its wake yet another of this region’s stunning national parks. Clear skies and high elevation make the region a great locale for star-gazing, so make sure to leave room on your Flagstaff itinerary for a visit to Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered.
