What’s not to love about Dublin? Quiet folks from the countryside may have a complaint or two about Ireland’s bustling capital, but for visitors, Dublin is an affordable, easily navigated city brimming with Medieval history, cultural landmarks, a thriving entertainment and theater scene, wonderful shopping, and a warmth and friendliness of its people unlike any other European capital. The River Liffey splits the city in two, and during the boom years, development on the northern side exploded, giving Dublin’s traditionally working-class area a cosmopolitan boost. The south side holds many of city’s historic and traditional tourist sites, including Trinity College—home of the national treasure the Celtic Book of Kells—Dublin Castle, St. Stephens Green, and the always active Temple Bar, with its many restaurants, pubs and shops. Keep your eyes peeled in the latter for archaeological excavations uncovering items from Dublin’s Viking past. In the evenings, pop into any venue from which you hear traditional Irish music emanating, and you’ll go home smiling. Speaking of smiling, don’t miss the Old Jameson Distillery tour, set in an interesting industrial area of the city and where you can personalize a bottle and canister with a name, making for a great souvenir. And even if you don’t drink the dark brew of Ireland’s most famous export, no Dublin visit is complete without a trip to the Guinness Storehouse. Head up to the Gravity Bar on the rooftop, to gaze at the Wicklow Mountains—yes, Ireland has mountains—and for 360-degree views over all of Dublin.
