Divided by the infamous Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989, Berlin is still struggling to shake off its tumultuous past and transform itself into a hip, sophisticated global player. Past and present collide in glorious style at the Reichstag, the meeting place for German's parliament. Originally built in 1894, the building was neglected for many years after World War II, but it was finally restored after German reunification in 1990. Topped by a massive glass dome, the Reichstag is a must-see destination. To get a great view of all of Berlin, visitors can head to the 1,200-foot Fernsehturm, a TV tower that also houses a revolving restaurant. A wave of immigration from Russia, Turkey, Poland and even Vietnam in the last 20 years has added a vibrant cultural mix to this capital city. In the trendy Mitte district, the Monsieur Vuong restaurant is a tasty example of this new diversity, serving up several types of spicy curry. For those whose love of architecture is matched only by their love of beer, the Nordic Embassies complex should not be missed. The buildings are the diplomatic offices of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Denmark. A bar on the third floor serves Nordic beer. Most of the walls and even the stairs are made of artfully designed glass. Art lovers could easily spend several days at Museum Island, a group of five historic museums exhibiting everything from Islamic artifacts to Impressionist paintings. For an outdoorsy daytime outing, it's hard to beat the Berlin Botanical Garden, which contains 20,000 plant species and a massive glass Great Pavilion.
