The Great House Inn

3 stars
3.7 / 5 11 reviews
Old world charm with all the amenities for the business and leisure traveler. Each guest room having its own character and charm. Spacious verandas for relaxing amidst the soothing Caribbean breezes. It would be my pleasure to welcome you to this wonderful Colonial home, which we have meticulously appointed with all the amenities for your comfort and convenience. The Courtyard restaurant and collection of fine shops make "staying home" fun. THE GREAT HOUSE INN is located in the renowned Fort George area and is just 100 meters from the Caribbean Sea. Around the corner stands the historic Fort Point Lighthouse at the entrance to the Belize Harbor and adjacent to the Baron Bliss Memorial, which was erected as a monument to the Englishman, Baron Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss. He lived aboard his yacht "Sea King", which was anchored just off the Fort George Point. Although he never set foot on Belizean soil, due to health reasons, he fell in love with the sea, the fishing and the charming qualities of its people. On his death on March 9th, 1926, he bequeathed a legacy of over a million dollars to Belize, the British Honduras, in a "Baron Bliss Trust". The 9th of March later became a public and bank holiday in this country. This Belizean landmark was built in 1927 by talented local craftsman and still retains its beauty, grace and charm. Now, this magnificent four-story colonial style residence in probably the largest classic wooden home still in existence in Belize. Originally built as a family home, this wonderful structure still provides the warmth and comfort reminiscent of the early colonial times of Belize. Spacious verandas at the front of the house allow you to relax and let go amidst the soothing embrace of the Caribbean breezes. The colonial heritage and ambiance are faithfully preserved in all of the sixteen guestrooms. Each is individually color coordinated with a host of tasteful and comfortable appointments. The look and feel of yesterday with today's modern conveniences make THE GREAT HOUSE INN Belize's most desirable "outpost" away from home. All of the spacious rooms feature FREE WI-FI, private baths, remote control cable TV, air conditioning, ceiling fans, hair dryers, mini refrigerators, coffee makes, direct dial telephones, dedicated fax lines, alarm clock, iron board and in-room safety deposit boxes. From polished pine floor to fresh fruit on arrival, the guestrooms and the staff let you know you made the right choice. Just passing through Belize City or staying a few days THE GREAT HOUSE INN is the place to be. Let your adventure begin.

Best time to take a vacation to Belize

  • High season runs from November through April (dry season), so plan ahead to snag discount hotel rates. February and March are the driest months, and mountainous areas are coolest. On the Cayes, temps linger in the 70s and 80s and tropical breezes bring natural air conditioning. In April and May, the mercury can reach into the 90s.

Summer is rain season, showers are typically short and sporadic, and cheap hotel rates are easier to find. Hurricane season spans from July through October.

Plan ahead if you're visiting during Carnival (the week before Lent, February) when towns host parades, dance competitions and festivities. Baron Bliss Day (March 9) is a nation-wide bash with a regatta, horse races and more.

Insider tips for Belize travel

  • Belize Botanic Gardens

Created and maintained by the duPlooy family, this non-for-profit botanic garden has five Belizean ecosystems. Tour the Native Orchid House, and learn about the native culture on the Plants of the Maya trail.

  • Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

Located close to San Pedro, these snorkeling and diving sites feature nurse sharks and sting rays.
  • Placencia

This town is nature-lovers paradise with mangroves, whale shark watching, butterflies, and Monkey River – home to famous Howler Monkeys, iguanas and crocodiles. Explore diverse cayes, and bike into town for Tutti Fruitti's gelato, art galleries and restaurants.
  • Lazy Croc BBQ

This laid-back restaurant on Ambergris Caye is a gem for barbecues, pulled pork, drunken rum cake and friendly service. Bring cash, and plan ahead -- the restaurant is open seasonally.

Belize highlights

  • Great Blue Hole

This giant sinkhole near the Lighthouse Reef is considered one of the most unique scuba diving spots in the world. Over 400 feet deep and nearly 1,000 feet across, this spot -- made famous by Jacques Cousteau -- draws divers with its limestone formations, stalactites, and crystal clear water that gets clearer the deeper one gets.
  • Community Baboon Sanctuary

An hour bus ride from Belize City, the sanctuary has more than 2,000 monkeys, so the chances of seeing one are pretty good. You can even camp on the sanctuary grounds or stay in a local bed and breakfast with a community member.
  • Belize Barrier Reef

Located about 1,000 feet offshore, the nearly 200-mile-long reef draws experienced scuba divers to first-time snorkelers, as well as fishing and kayaking. Swim alongside hawksbill and loggerhead turtles, nurse and reef sharks, colorful fish and reef formations.
  • Mayan Ruins

Discover former cities of the Mayan civilization. Visit Caracol -- the largest Mayan site in the country -- and ogle Canaa, a nearly 150-foot-high pyramid. Explore the temples and palaces of Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock), and walk the ancient trails of Lamanai (Submerged Crocodile), where the first inhabitants date back to 1500 B.C.
  • Belize Cave System

If you're the deep explorer type, Belize travel gives you the chance to do just that. With the largest cave system in Central America, Belize has 65 documented caves, and counting. The well-known Actun Tunichil Muknal holds Mayan artifacts and diverse animal life, and access is limited to licensed tour guides.
  • Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Recognized as the first jaguar preserve in the world, this nature reserve near the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains is filled with acres of nature trails, waterfalls and neotropical birds. Your chances of seeing jaguars (pumas, ocelots, tapirs and mountain cows) increase with an overnight stay or two in cabins or campgrounds.
  • Belize Zoo

Located on 29 acres of tropical savanna west of Belize City, the Belize Zoo boasts more than 125 animals native to the area. Find scarlet macaws, harpy eagles, the endangered Jabiru Stork, boa constrictors and jaguars. For extra thrills, arrange a guided night tour, or kayak the Sibun River.
  • St. John's Cathedral

See European history come alive in the oldest Anglican Church in Central America. With bricks imported from Europe, St. John's Cathedral has seen its share of famous visitors, including the Archbishops of Canterbury, York and Wales. Four Mosquito Coast kings were crowned here between 1815 and 1845.
  • Museum of Belize

Located in Belize City, this former colonial prison captures the nation's British colonial history along with its hardened past. Built in the mid-1800s, the exhibition includes cat-o-nine tails, chain balls, a jail cell and original graffiti. Find Mayan artifacts, colonial postcards, old bottles and native Belize insects.
  • Ambergris Caye

Of the hundreds of islands in the waters off of Belize, Ambergris Caye is the biggest of the bunch. Close to the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, the 25-mile island draws visitors to the Belize Barrier Reef and the beach, where dive shops and jetties await eager divers.
