Best time to take a vacation to Aruba

  • Thanks to its location in the far southern part of the Caribbean, Aruba has no monsoon or hurricane season. The most rain falls between October and January, but the island's generally dry climate isn't likely to spoil any Aruba vacation.

Aruba's year-round good weather means that even the low season -- which starts in April and runs through December -- is still a great time to visit.

Between January and March, Aruba's Carnival celebrations put locals and visitors in an especially festive mood, with street parties, parades and dance. Aruba celebrates its first fashion week in November 2011, which promises to start a new annual tradition of fashion shows, parties and shopping galore.

Insider tips for Aruba travel

  • San Nicolas

Check out Aruba's British Caribbean side at San Nicolas, the island's second-largest city. The main street is home to souvenir shops, but the most famous stop is Charlie's Bar where the much-photographed walls are adorned with artwork, newspaper clippings and memorabilia from around the world.

  • Coastal Clean-Up Day

Make a positive impact on the environment during your Aruba vacation. If you're visiting in September or October, consider donating an afternoon to the annual Coastal Clean-Up Day, organized by the Environmental Committee of the Aruba Hotel & Tourism Association.

  • Gostoso

Sample authentic Aruban cuisine (as well as Portuguese and other international flavors) at Gostoso, one of the best places to eat in Oranjestad. Among the favorite Aruban dishes is stewed beef (or goat), prepared with cilantro, garlic, onions and red pepper.

  • Language lessons

Aruba is a wonderfully multilingual place, with English, Dutch, Spanish and the locally born language, Papiamento, spoken with equal ease by residents. Learn a bit of Papiamento yourself: Free language lessons are offered at resorts including Divi Aruba.

  • Open-air tours

With its dry climate, panoramic scenery and warm sunshine, Aruba is best enjoyed in the open air. Enjoy the island's natural beauty from a unique perspective with a Jeep tour, ATV tour, or rent a scooter.

Aruba highlights

  • Aruba
  • Golf

Make a tee time at Tierra del Sol Resort & Country Club and test your skills at the Robert Trent Jones II-designed 18-hole course, which overlooks the northwest coast. Or head to Links at Divi Aruba, a nine-hole course near the beach.

  • Arikok National Park

Hike the trails at the scenic, 13-square-mile Arikok National Park for a close encounter with the 620-foot Mount Jamanota, the island's tallest point.

  • Countryside

Aruba's scenic kunucu (countryside) is noteworthy for its otherworldly terrain, dotted with cacti, dramatic hills and huge boulders and rock formations that provide surreal-looking photo opportunities.

  • Museums

Peel yourself away from the beach with a visit to one of the island's great museums. In the capital city of Oranjestad, you'll find the Archeology Museum, which preserves the heritage of the island's Amerindian culture, and the Numismatic Museum, which exhibits thousands of coins and currencies dating back as far as 400 B.C.

  • Resorts

Whether you prefer all-inclusive, boutique, luxury or value-priced accommodations, the Aruba travel experience provides multiple options. Radisson Aruba Resort, Casino & Spa has a swimming pool steps from the beach, and the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort & Casino boasts contemporary décor, indulgent amenities and a picturesque beachfront location. And the Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino has two separate hotels: the adults-only Renaissance Marina Hotel and the family-friendly Renaissance Ocean Suites.

  • Shopping

Jewelry, electronics, crystal and china are among the finds that await in Aruba. Score deals on international name brands in Aruba's capital city Oranjestad, or hit the Aruba Aloe Museum & Factory, an island gem set on 150 acres of aloe fields, for locally produced health and beauty items.

  • Spas

Pampering yourself is easy in Aruba. Many hotels have day spas with treatments that use all-natural local products including aloe, cactus and desert mud. The Manchebo Beach Resort and Spa, for example, has a Caribbean-Balinese fusion-style spa on the beach.

  • Water sports

Aruba travel is popular not just because of what happens on land. Wreck diving in coastal waters is especially popular, and Aruba's trade winds bring the world's best windsurfing and kiteboarding.

  • Watch the flutter of colorful creatures at the Butterfly Farm, and meet big birds at the Aruba Ostrich Farm. At the Donkey Sanctuary, you'll see dozens of gentle creatures that were once the island's main form of transportation.

  • Beaches

Wherever you find yourself in Aruba, you're never far from white sand and irresistibly clear water. Swim the gentle waters of Baby Beach, set in a calm lagoon, and Arashi Beach near the iconic California Lighthouse. Enjoy snorkeling on Malmok Beach, and the popular hotel-fringed Palm Beach and Eagle Beach.
