UNIX Administrator

SUMMARY

The candidate will provide support to a 24x7 production environment working from our Chicago corporate offices. Responsibilities include support, trouble-shooting hardware, software and network related problems. The Unix Administrator I will participate in maintaining the highest availability and best possible performance of multiple large-scale online travel websites. The Unix Administrator I is also responsible for successfully contributing to a team oriented support environment.

Responsibilities

  • Execute all aspects of site planned and unplanned maintenance activities
  • Utilize monitoring tools to proactively identify problems with systems, applications, and networks.
  • Assist in coordinating with vendors and escalation support teams
  • Develop timelines for problems that assist in problem reporting and root cause analysis
  • Implement all upgrades as directed
  • Execute jobs and maintenance as directed
  • Resolve help desk tickets
  • Execute simple Standard Operating Procedures as directed
  • Help with small work efforts to improve NOC processes
  • Participate in the management of system backups and recovery as needed
  • Assist in incident management including problem resolution and tracking problems
  • Must keep current with technology used in the NOC and current workstation configuration
  • Create/Update Change Requests as directed
  • Ability to drive results
  • Unix Workstation Administration

  • Semi annual performance self assessment
  • Follow processes needed to maintain operational stability

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in the system administration experience in a Unix environment (preferably Solaris or Linux)
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP and networking principles as well as web technologies
  • Working understanding of Linux troubleshooting commands in regards to disk I/O, CPU usage, load, and network connections & usage.
  • Familiar with the in-house tools such as Mercury Topaz, Netcool, and HP openview desirable
  • Familiarity with shell scripting
  • Self-motivated team player, able to set priorities and manage to deadlines.
  • Excellent trouble-shooting, communication and customer service skills.
  • Must be available to support in a 24x7 production environment, and be willing to work all shifts on a rotating basis
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly resolve problems
  • Strong ability to perform well under pressure
  • Must be able to multi-task, be process-minded and detail oriented
  • Passion for uptime and experience in e-commerce environments
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience
