Beautiful Resort

  • Travel Bug 2012
  • May 15, 2012
The Marriott is a beautiful resort we great ammendities and beautiful views. I was however greatly disappointed in the level of customer service, i found most of the hotel staff (predominently the servers, front desk, and adventure staff) rude and unhelpful. The service at ALL restaurant establishments was unreasonably slow, while I know people are not in a rush on vacation 2 appetizers taking 40 minutes to arrive seems excessive. I found it odd they offered activities like yoga on the sundeck, but upon arriving I was told they dont actually have anyone to instruct. Overall the hotel was great but the staff could use a lesson in customer care.

This was my second time at the Marriott in St. Thomas. They have done some nice upgrades since the last time I was there. overall, it was a really nice place to stay with great amenities. Room we were given was a little bit of a disappointment, but we got over it quickly with all of the other things to do on the resort. All in al, I would recommend this resort to anyone looking for an upscale resort in St. Thomas.

Sugar Bay Resort could be Great!

  • Apr 24, 2012
Great location but hard to get to from airport. Food just OK, but area rest. (particularly Mims Rest.) are very good.. A little to much up and down step walking, but suttle service is good. Beautiful Views! We would (and will) return. All Inclusive deal not worth it... TG

Perfect Vacation

The trip my wife and I took to Sugar Bay Resort and Spa could not have been more perfect. She and I read many of the reviews before going and were a little concerned that more than a few of them were mixed as to staff, amenities, cleanliness, food availability/quality, etc. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, all I can say is that we were welcomed to a very clean room, the staff was friendly and attentive without being "overbearing" or always having their hand out, the food was delicious.....particularly the baked goods, breads/muffins...outstanding and plenty of variation. The grounds and 5 pools were well maintaned. The beach area was spotless. There was activities for all ages. We are already planning on going back next year with the kids

If looking for that little getaway, romantic view, and nice little beach, then this place is perfect. These are basically individually owned 1 and 2 bedroom condos, with kitchen, dining and living rooms and very nice bedrooms and baths. Bed was a king, too hard for my taste but acceptable. Remember this is the tropics, expect some bugs. Beach is great, the dive shop was fantastic. Restaurant was very good but a little pricey, but then everywhere we went food was expensive. Definitely going back.

Fantastic beach resort

  • Libra289
  • Apr 9, 2012
Fantastic location, great resort. We were in suite 736 that has a wonderful view of the bay and is a very nicely refurbished flat with great bathroom and living room and angle terrace. The downsides were the lack of wireless signal and the steps to reach the room from the beach but overall a great vacation. The resort has very convenient restaurant and cafe on the beach front even if on the pricey side. They also had a gated parking in case you rent a car.

The view is wonderful. The staff very friendly and helpful. This is not a glamour hotel, but extremely comfortable and laid back. It's how we start our annual ten day visit to St. Thomas and St. John. Food is ok at the restaurant, not great, but the view is worth it. Plan to stay for a few days again next year.

Fit Our Needs

  • LittleMom
  • Feb 21, 2012
The hotel is past it's prime, but was clean and meet our needs. The beach and snorkeling are great, but the reception could be a little more friendly and helpful. If you are looking for amenities, you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for a clean room, a great beach and a kitchen then you will be happy. The bar up the hill is very friendly, and happily shares information about the island.

Beautiful Beach - Rooms Need Updating

  • The Traveler
  • May 27, 2009
The overall experience was good. Some of the rooms were more updated than others, but all were tolerable. We did not have any pests, torn screens, etc. Our room had nice stainless steel appliances and it appeared the bathroom was in the midst of being updated because some of the materials were in the closet. The staff was nice with the exception of one person. They have a grill near the beach that prepared hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.

If you are simply staying on transit between other islands then this may be the place. Good for overnight, bad for anything more than just an overnight to and from another destination. Nice beach bar, friendly staff, beach OK. Close to airport. Clean but shows it's age. Would NOT plan a weeks vacation here!!

a place to relax

  • almost mrs robertson
  • May 9, 2012
This hotel is actually quite nice! There is only one restaurant and one bar, so definitely rent a car, and venture out! All the bartenders in the resort are super friendly. Restaurant staff, not so much. Be sure to stop by the little beach shop they open during day to give some love to hugo the resort kitty. BRING BUG SPRAY! They have crazy mosquitos all over the island. the bartenders well also give you some gin on a paper towel to rib on yourself, works like a charm. The pueblo market is just down the road, I recommend you but some small refrigerated items and beer or booze.its way cheaper to buy atthe kmart though. Take the car ferry to st john and snorkel with turtles! there is an awesome little bar called club capri right in charlotte amalie buy the scotiobank, the owner andrew is super nice! Keep in mind, one street behind the shops in charlotte amalie, you will run into the poverty part of the island. Don't go there! renting a car was the best thing we did! You can buy a cooler at the market and leave it in the trunk with your drinks, and ice from the resort. Plus you can travel to all the beaches at your leisure.taxis are super expensive! This resort is a 5 minute walk from the airport, don't hail a cab, you will feel foolish. When you get to the front of the airport, walk left and follow the road with the airport runway on your left. Oh and they drive on the left side of the road. And everyone will look scary and unfriendly, just say ” good morning, afternoon, evening” you will be amazing how friendly the people are after. Bring your own snorkel gear!!! hopes this helps!

There were issues at first with the phone and radio not working, but after I made the complaint it was rectified. My 3yr old loved the view of the boats and seaplanes leaving so the location of the room was perfect. Unfortunately I couldn't enjoy the casino because I didn't have a babysitter, but we did enjoy the pool. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

I travel on business to a lot of places therefore I've stayed in a lot of hotels. This one is very good, very clean, but I've seen better for the price. If it was a cheaper rate, I would call it perfect , but for this price no.. sorry. Service wasn't too great either.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon here and absolutely loved the privacy we had in room 112. The pool and open shower was wonderful. Overall the staff was awesome except for one front desk person. (you will no who she is). The food and staff at Torsido Taco was great. Saphire Beach was a short walk and a very lovely beach.

  • Feb 16, 2012
This hotel is just s short Taxi ride from Red Hook. Probably the best thing about the location is the proximity to Sapphire Beach. You can easily walk to the beach and relax or snorkel. We saw sting ray--squid--and a large assortment of tropical fish. White sand and beautiful blue water. We enjoyed the private pool. Our dishwasher didn't work the whole time we were there. The front desk staff was not overly helpful or warm. Almost abrasive in response to questions. We experienced the same feelings on St John so might be the island standard. It is very easy to catch the dollar taxi right our front. We forgot about the complimentary continental breakfast which was a nice ammenity. The restaurant and bar staff were interactive and entertaining. Happy hour tacos are 2$ and tasted great.

Great location, so-so hotel

  • climberguy
  • Feb 2, 2012
Like everything else on St Thomas this hotel is quite expensive for what you get. But you are paying for a view, the view of the bay and the other islands was fantastic. The room was just ok. We had a full kitchen which we used often, but everything in it was pretty old. The bathroom was recently remodeled and was quite nice. The bed was old and uncomfortable. The best was the huge wrap-around balcony with a table and chairs overlooking the bay. You can also walk to Coci beach and Coral World, which are definitely worth staying at this hotel. The staff was like most of the people we met on the island, not very friendly, but they helped when asked. There are 3 pools and a couple of restaurants; we only ate at Jack's Bight which was pretty good, but so busy it took over an hour to get our food. Compared to other resorts on the island this one is a bargain, but it is still pricey for what one comes to expect from a $200+/night hotel.

Anniversary trip with parents

  • Mar 12, 2012
The hotel was very good for my wife and I. My parents were celebrating their 50th anniversary in St. Thomas and my wife and I joined them. We needed a hotel that was more reasonably priced than where my parents stayed and the Carib Beach resort worked out well. Our room was clean and even though it wasn't fancy, it met all our needs. No beach but not a far walk (or they had a shuttle to a sister property)

Good for a few nights stay, friendly and central

  • Ms. Future Island Gal
  • May 14, 2012
Everyone is super friendly including owner and staff. You feel safe since they lock their gates after hours. Breakfast is nice. Rooms are simple, but feels clean. Beds are fine, air condintioning a little loud, but I'm not use to wall built-ins. Lots of steps to get to room, so be aware. American transplants to the island give great information, staff gave great ideas for food/beaches. "Safari" the locals bus are cheep to get you around, just have to ask so you know how it runs and payment. This part of downtown seems to be closed after 6pm-

Cleaner, newer alternative to Frenchman'

  • Ol' Slapnuts
  • Aug 17, 2010
Room was alot cleaner and brighter than the rooms at the Morningstar or Frenchman's Reef. There's no late check out, they charge $100 per hour past 10:30 am. Front desk threatened to send security to remove us. Really surprising as I travel to the Marriott property in St. Thomas yearly, sometimes twice a year.

Pool was great for the kids. Nice little slide that kept them entertained. From the pool you are steps away from the beach and the great snorkeling. Bring you own equipment (pickup a cheap set ($20) from Target). Buy local food to keep in the kitchen and save on breakfast or lunch. Use the money to go out to dinner.

Terrible Customer Service,but greatprice

  • Gotta love the price, just nasty service
  • Jan 16, 2011
The customer service from the hotel "locals" staff was absoluetly terrible! The ladies were nasty and made you beg for assistance like "more pillows, towels, glasses..." etc. Worst of all, after being there for 9 days, they waited until the last day of our stay to provide us with room service. THEY DO NOT CLEAN ROOMS!! However, the hotel staff made up of Americans were excellent. They treated you like you were a...GUEST!! They smiled and served you properly. The locals are nasty and make your visit terrible. We had to learn to just laugh at their lack of service. HOWEVER, the price and views made it worthwhile!!

We truly enjoyed the laid back experience of St. Thomas. All of the local people we interacted with were extremely friendly and helpful. The only thing we truly disliked about our experience was the fact that streets and location were not marked very well - very few street signs, etc. Once we were able to figure out where things were, we had a great time.

The Hotel was very good. Personal was very pleasant, bellhop could have some nicer shirts instead for the ones with holes on their back. Room had the most wonderful view and accommodations. Would recommend this hotel to anybody, who don't have problems with walking, there is a lot of stairs and steep hills.

Nice Place

  • funinthesun
  • Dec 30, 2009
Location: Anchorage Beach is close to the eastern village of Red Hook (where the ferry for St. John leaves). Anchorage is managed by Antilles Resorts from the Sapphire Beach Resort, approx. 10 mins away by car. We spent most of our beach days on the Sapphire Resort's beach anyway, because the beach is much larger, has a nice underwater scenerey (saw turtles, a barracuda, great corals) and rents snorkeling gear for $5 for 1 hr or $10/day. So next time, we'll definitely try to get rooms at Sapphire beach resort before going with Anchorage Beach. That said, our apartment (2 bedrooms) at the Anchorage was pretty nice, with cooking facilities (and wireless internet access for $32 per week).Caution - the check-in for the Anchorage Beach resort is at the Sapphire Beach Resort, approx. 10 mins away by car. Don't go straight to the Anchorage resort, let a taxi ($60 for 5 people from the airport) drop you off at Sapphire Beach (close to the little village of Red Hook). Antilles resorts (manages sapphire and anchorage) has a free shuttle to get you to Anchorage after check-in.Car rental:You will need a rental car to go anywhere from Anchorage. We drove to a nearby food center to cook most meals (restaurants are not in walking distance, and expensive for a family of 5). We had no luck whatsoever getting a rental from one of the national chains - budget has a counter at the Sapphire beach resort, but you'll need to rent way ahead if you're there during busy holidays. For staying at Anchorage (and even otherwise), we recommend E-Z car rentals (340)775-6255. Their office is directly at the Anchorage resort, and the guy there - [...]- was super nice and helpful, gave us a 20 min. tour of the immediate surroundings, plus lots of tips on driving on the left side, and on what to do and where to go/eat/shop on St. Thomas.

Very nice place to stay

  • Arden Single Mom

What a great spot! We had a floor level condo that was on a hill, so the balcony still looked out over the property. It included a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. We could cook our own meals when necessary and we did a load or two of laundry daily, washing our beach towels every day (brought from home). The supply of hotel towels is kept in the room in case you need more, so there's no calling for room service! Breakfast daily was eaten out on the balcony area. The maid actually did the dishes one day when we left too quickly to wash up after breakfast. It's a small drive to get to the main road into town and other beaches, but it did not stop us from coming back to the room whenever we wanted. Plenty of restaurants and tour activities nearby. We recommend that you take the ferry to St. John, which is only about 5 min. from our condo. Our microwave broke and was replace within a day. The Sapphire Beach Resort (located about 7 min away) manages the condo property, so no room service, but that was fine with us because the local grocery is about 5 min away. The Sapphire let us borrow snorkeling equipment! What a great savings that was!! And we could keep it until we left. Beautiful property, nicely kept lawn and tennis courts. The beach is great for enjoying the view and drinking your pina coladas - we didn't swim there, but there are plenty of beaches for swimming accessible. Recommend that you rent a car from the airport, makes the stay much easier. Also, definitely do the mangrove tour.

Perfect!

  • Deb85
  • Nov 27, 2011
If you want an out of the way absolutely beautiful place to relax, this is the place for you! The grounds were absolutely beautiful- beach, pool, palm trees... We were amazed by how calm and quiet this place was. The room was great and the staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed snorkeling and kayaking on the bay for a reasonable price. $10 to snorkel for a whole day. There was always staff members at the rental place and they were all very helpful. The restaurant was good but not great food-wise, but the wait staff was very nice. We walked a couple times to the town of Red Hook. It took about 20 minutes but the walk was a little dangerous. There was a grocery store there that had a good selection, but more expensive than what we were used to. We were able to get things for the fridge to do a couple breakfasts and lunches in our room. In Red Hook there is a $2 taxi that will take you all the way to Charlotte Amalie. We did that and ate at a great place there called Cuzzins. There were some restaurants and coffee shops in Red Hook that we ate at too. The taxi ride from Red Hook was $5/person. We had our kids with us and this was a great location to bring them with the snorkeling and kayaking, beach, hot tub, and pool. It would have been better if the walk to Red Hook was better for walking, but if you had a car, you would have it easier. There were lots of tours available in the city and a Ferry to St. John in Red Hook. Boat trips to the other islands were avaiIable too. I would recommend this to people who want a quiet, beautiful place to relax.
