San Antonio is the second largest city in the state of
Texas and 7th largest in the United States. Visited by more than 26
million annual vacationers, San Antonio is a beautiful city at the axis of
three different geological terrains: Hill Country, South Texas
Plains and Prairie and Lakes. There's a lot to do in this city: fine art
museums, historical missions and plenty of amusement parks in addition to great
dining.
San Antonio is considered to be the cradle of Texan liberty.
Its most well-known landmark is the Alamo, the site of the famous 1836 battle. No
other city in Texas reflects the state's Spanish and Mexican heritage like San
Antonio. The Hispanic atmosphere of San Antonio makes it a truly unique U.S.
city. This becomes most evident during Fiesta Week, a yearly celebration that
attracts 3.5 million people to its 110 plus events from all over to enjoy
parades, music, festivals, fairs and food and drink in the charming downtown
streets of the city.
San Antonio's downtown is the hub of the city's nightlife,
with hundreds of dining options, bars and clubs mostly on the Riveralk and
throughout street level. Other major nightlife locales include Southtown Arts
District, home to First Friday Art Walk, a large art block party with crowds
upward of 20,000 along Alamo Street. Scores of dining, galleries, theatres and
lodging options, that include more than 10 historic 19th century B&B's
adjacent to the Riverwalk.

Convenient downtown location, great staff.

Staff was very pleasant and professional, especially Richard who recommended several excellent local places to eat. Hotel is 2 blocks from restaurant area of River Walk, and a few blocks from the Alamo and other downtown attractions. Hotel itself is comfortable, historic and elegant in an old style fashion, but could use some serious freshening. Price of room was fine, but keep in mind there is an extra daily charge to park your car overnight.

The hotel looks like a set from Mad Men and is very quiet. However, they nickel and dime you for everything. Parking is $25 a night + $10 per day. So parking a car for 2 days is about the same as staying in the hotel a day. Continental breakfast is $13. Internet $10 a day. Roll out bed is $15. Need I go on?

- Apr 19, 2012
This is an impressive hotel on a great river attraction in a friendly easy going southwestern town. Close proximity to the Alamo is a bonus. I love this town and wish I had more time to spend here. The hotel has a great roof top swimming pool. Excellent exercise equipment room at no charge. I think free WiFi would make it a five star value. The views were great and even an inside room would give a view of the atrium which is an amazing 13 stories high.

The Gunter is one of those historic hotels that gives you a special feeling since the moment you check in. Personally, I love the old pictures hanging in the lobby and the old telephone switchboard near the elevators is fabulous. Once you get pass the lobby, room was clean and comfty, but average. On the plus side, bed was great. On the downside bathroom is a little bit small and does not have windows or odor eliminator system.
Restaurant was above average, with a good breakfast. Had a drink at the bar which maintains the same “historic” feeling as the lobby, but with most tables being too small for my taste. Crowd was your usual business travel, just want a drink; so nothing very exciting.
Location is quite good. With easy access to local theaters and riverwalk.
If you get a good rate, I believe the Gunter is a good deal for your money.

Great Deal and Location

Me and my girlfriends went here for a weekend getaway and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel was beautiful and there was only a five minute walk along the riverwalk to many restaurants and bars. We had a great time and the staff was very friendly. The only downfall was the $25 fee to self-park in the hotel's garage.

My stay at the Riverwalk Plaza Hotel was very enjoyable. It was near to everthing that I wanted to do. The staff was very pleasant.
The only thing that left me a little worried, was that for some reason they could not check me out when I left at four o'clock in the morning.

It's in a good location, but does not have direct access to the River Walk. You must leave the hotel and walk across the street then down to the River Walk. Some of the rooms have balconies...so be specific when you reserve your room. It was clean. The staff was okay. The restaurant was good but too expensive. I would stay again because the price was good and the location was convenient to everything. It cost $12 a day to park at the hotel in addition to the room charges.

Can't be beat for history and location
-
tarynw
- Apr 28, 2012
Let's start by being honest- this is not a chain hotel like Marriott. The rooms are smaller, older, and more dated. But what you lose in cosmetics is more than made up for in location, the beautiful pool, and historic value. There is only one Menger- stay here and experience it!
Definitely ask for a balcony room- although they do not have king beds they are bigger and the balcony is great.
Hotel is in need of a facelift but I can overlook it for the sheer historic value of the place. Breakfast in the colonial room is also good, location is unbeatable, and public areas are incredible.
Enjoy San Antonio!

We were looking for location and definately got it at the Menger. We are also history buffs, so we didn't mind that this was an OLD hotel with small rooms, etc. If you are looking for the most in comfort and amenities, this might not be for you. Our room was very well air conditioned and clean, but the towels were sad. If all you are going to do is sleep there, it will be fine. If you want a home away from home, the need for repair might be an issue - EX: our bathroom needed some serious TLC. But we were walking distance from everything we wanted to do including Riverwalk. I had some unexpected work come up and the business office was always open and easy to use. The staff was good to us, the food in both bar and restaurant was good and we would return to this hotel.

- Apr 26, 2012
The location of this hotel is perfect for visiting the Alamo, Riverwalk and other San Antonio attractions. It is only a few steps to the Alamo and within walking distance to Riverwalk. The hotel only valet parks your vehicle so there is a daily charge however, you can are retrieve it very quickly by calling the valet. This may not be a family friendly hotel since the restaurant selection is limited to one and the cost is high. But if you don't mind walking a short distance you can find a Subway, Mc Donalds and the Rivercenter foodcourt for kids meals.

Everything was very good. It's an older hotel but everything was clean and the staff friendly. The continental breakfast was well stocked and included healthy items. There was plenty of free parking for the guests. It's a little far to walk to the Riverwalk for some (0.7 miles) especially if chilly or rainy or short on time. I think they had a shuttle but I had a rental car so did not use it.

We enjoyed our stay at the Crockett. It's super-conveniently located to the Alamo (across the street) and riverwalk (1-block). Rooms are clean, staff is nice. The room's a little small, but it's a historic hotel, so this makes sense... it's big enough. All told, a great value and a really nice place.

This was my second stay here. The first was two and a half years ago. The Hotel is still clean, staff is still friendly and the location remains great! It's right behind the Alamo! It is next to the glorious Menger Hotel and down the street from the tour bus offices. The much-improved Riverfront Mall, with Morton's Steakhouse, Macy's and an AMC movie theater is literally 100 feet away! There is no restaurant, but the RiverWalk is two blocks away! I LOVE this hotel.

Very Classy

We loved this hotel, it was tasteful, the staff were helpful and friendly. The room overlooked the pool, it was very quiet and peaceful. Loved it, only drawback, parking of $32.00 a night, was a little excessive we felt, also paying for the internet seemed a little harsh!
But will go back, hopefully, we loved that it was right there on the Riverwalk. A classy hotel, just perfect really.

The river walk was a mere 15 steps from where we got off the elevator. Very old school hotel, they don't make them like this anymore!

Well, I didn't expect much from this place. There was a free breakfast and close to the Alamo. Other than that, it wasn't that great. I think there were bed bugs and the air conditioner was pretty loud.

Should have been better!

First of all I would like to say I wish I could rate this hotel higher. It has all the trappings and capability to be a 5 star hotel, BUT it's not! Not even close! The difference between a 5 star and a 4 or lower hotel is in the details! The staff here is not well-trained and the managment followup on customer generated issues is very poor. For instance, after unpacking in my room I found neither of the two Televisions would work. I called the front desk and was told they would take care of it. I made another call a couple of hours later and another call the next morning before the maint. guy arrived that AFTERNOON to change the remote controls batteries. My room was NOT made up that day and was only attended to when I went to the lobby and spoke to the concierge about it that evening. I spoke to him because he stated there was no manager on duty. To his credit, he did get housekeeping to take care of it within the hour!! Little things - Like noticing that room-service dishes stayed in the hallway all day while numerous staff walked by. Now, I will say the hotel rooms are VERY NICE but just expect any human touch of service here because you won't get it!

43 Wedding Anniversary Get-a-Way
-
Bob and Diane
- May 19, 2012
We stayed on the riverwalk sidek, 10th floor for one two days and one night. The suite was perfect with a couch in the living area, which was very relaxing even though the TV remote did not work. The TV worked manually which was just fine as we really were not interested in the TV, just wanted some nice background music. There were no channels for music... plenty of movies on deman. We spent time on the couch recalling 43 years of marriage and how we had been blessed.
We found the bedroom very confortable, but again the TV nor the clock radio had much for romantic music. We were up high enought that we left the drapes open most of the evening which made for a very romantic setting with the lights out.
After dinner we came back to our room and wanted to go up the the rooftop for a late night swim, but did not seem to find time enjoy it. It looked real inviting.
Really this anniversary was the best ever and actually better than our honeymoon.....

I was here for the Alamo Bowl game. New hotel and excellent location. We were in walking distance. One downside was paying 21 dollars for parking in the hotel lot which had cars parked on top of each other. Parking should be included or cheaper.

Traveler from the North

Stayed at this hotel based on the price. However, once you arrive at the hotel, they charge you $5.00 a day to park your car in the parking lot (I am sure this is a means of generating money to pay for their parking structure). I told the receptionist that it did not mention anything about this fee when I booked . He said "Yea, I know" and continued to charge me. Overall a fair value except for the parking issue.

The hotel was pretty average. The staff was friendly and the rooms were clean. All the tourist sites were a short walk away and I never had any trouble. I wish I didn't spend too much per night but for the location, it's not a bad price at all.
Prices reflect the lowest "base rate" found over the next 30 days. Rates are subject to change and may not include taxes and fees, hotel service charges, extra person charges, or incidentals, such as room service. Converted rates are provided for your convenience.
